Chapter 2

The library closes at midnight. I'm scheduled until eleven-forty-five. I push the cart down the history aisle and shelve books in call number order. My hands move automatically. Dewey Decimal is easier than thinking.

I picked up three extra shifts this week. The library pays eight-fifty an hour. Event setup pays nine. I did a conference room teardown yesterday that left my shoulders aching. I have seventy-three dollars in my checking account. Rent is due in twelve days.

I don't let myself do the math. Not yet.

The break room smells like burnt popcorn and old coffee. I open the mini fridge to put my water bottle inside. That's when I see it.

A foil-wrapped plate. No label. No note.

I lift the foil. Rice and beans. Grilled chicken. A roll.

I close the fridge and stand there for a moment. My throat tightens.

Mrs. Delgado hasn't spoken to me since the apology. She can't. I understand that. But every night this week, there's been a plate.

I take it to my corner table in the empty dining hall. The one by the window where no one sits during the day. I eat slowly. The chicken is still warm.

I don't cry. I just chew and swallow and stare at the dark glass.

The scholarship application is due Friday. I've been working on my essay for three weeks. Five hundred words on overcoming adversity. I have plenty of material now.

I'm in the library stacks on the fourth floor. It's Tuesday night. Nine-thirty. The floor is nearly empty. I shelve returns and try not to think about the forum posts.

I hear footsteps behind me. Heels on tile.

I don't turn around. I know who it is before she speaks.

"Marley."

Cadence's voice has none of the warmth she uses in public. It's flat. Almost bored.

I slide a book onto the shelf. Keep my back to her.

"We need to talk," she says.

I move to the next book. "I'm working."

"I'll be quick." She steps closer. I can smell her perfume. Something expensive and floral. "The Chancellor's Merit Scholarship. You need to withdraw your application."

I stop. Turn slowly.

She's standing three feet away. Arms crossed. Her expression is calm and certain. Like she's telling me the weather.

"Why would I do that?" I ask.

Her mouth curves. Not quite a smile. "Because it belongs to someone of my caliber. And because you should know your place by now."

I look at her. Really look. At the girl who planted a cockroach in her own food. Who cried on camera. Who got my income revoked with a single pointed finger.

I turn back to the cart. Pick up another book.

"I'm not withdrawing," I say.

Silence. Then her heels click once. Twice.

"You'll regret that," she says quietly.

I shelve the book. Align the spine. Move to the next one.

When I finally glance back, she's gone.

The first post appears Wednesday morning.

I see it during my ten-minute break between classes. I'm scrolling through the campus forum app. There's a new thread with forty-three comments already.

*Anonymous: Anyone else notice that girl from the dining hall cockroach thing? Saw her pocketing stuff at the campus bookstore last week. Security didn't catch her but I did.*

My hands go cold.

I scroll down. More comments. Some calling me out by name now. Some adding details that aren't true. Someone says I got fired for hygiene violations. Someone else says worse.

By lunch, there are three more threads.

By dinner, I've been mentioned in seventeen.

I sit in my dorm room and watch the number climb. My roommate moved out last semester. I have the space to myself. Right now I'm grateful for that.

My phone buzzes. A text from a number I don't recognize.

*You really thought you could compete with people like us?*

I block it. Another text comes through. Different number. Same message.

I turn off my phone.

***

Thursday morning, I walk into Economics 301 and sit in my usual seat. Third row, left side.

The girl who normally sits next to me takes one look and moves three rows back.

I open my notebook. Uncap my pen.

Professor Chen starts the lecture. I take notes. My handwriting is steady.

When class ends, I'm the last one out. I always am now.

In the hallway, I pass Kimber Long. Pre-law. We had coffee once, back in September. She laughed at my jokes.

She sees me coming and turns to her friend. Whispers something. They both look at their phones and smile.

I keep walking.

The bathroom is empty. I lock myself in a stall and sit on the closed lid. My hands are shaking now. Just my hands. The rest of me is very still.

I count to sixty. Then I stand up, flush for the sound of it, and wash my hands.

The girl in the mirror looks tired. But she's still here.

I go to my next class.

Friday afternoon, I submit my scholarship application. Five hundred words on overcoming adversity. I don't mention the cockroach. I don't mention the forum. I write about my mother instead. About double shifts and dignity.

I hit submit and close my laptop.

That night, I eat another foil-wrapped plate in the empty dining hall. Mrs. Delgado left chicken again. And a roll. And a small container of fruit.

I eat every bite.

When I'm done, I wash the plate in the kitchen sink. Dry it carefully. Leave it on the counter where she'll find it.

I walk back to my dorm in the dark. The campus is full of people laughing and talking and living lives that don't include me.

I don't cry. I don't break.

I just go very quiet.

And I start keeping a list.
