Chapter 2

I took a few deep breaths and kept persuading myself in my heart.

Mary had been favoring my good-for-nothing brother for a long time. I came home to live permanently this time, so I couldn't quarrel with them.

I suppressed my anger and said, "Give me the key to Ethan's house. I'll live there first and move back when the tenant contract expires."

Hearing my words, they fell silent for a moment.

Ethan walked towards me with an awkward smile.

"Well... The wedding date has been set, and someone is living in the house now, so..."

I frowned.

"Who is living there? When are you getting married? Why I didn't know?"

Mary said in a cold voice, "You are a very busy person. You don't come home during the holidays. We dare not disturb you. We don't even know what kind of work you do in the city. Your father and I wanted to go to see you, but you refused us. We didn't dare to tell you such a troublesome thing as Ethan's marriage."

Every word she said made me feel upset.

Ethan forced a smile and said, "My girlfriend's parents are living there. We need their help to arrange the wedding. We can't afford that if they stay in a hotel all the time..."

I endured it.

"Isn't your wedding date coming up soon? They will go back after you get married. The house has three bedrooms. I can stay in the guest room, right?"

Ethan showed embarrassment on his face.

"Her parents and her brother probably won't go back for a while. Her brother is planning to settle down here and find a job."

I frowned deeply.

"I bought the house for you. Why did you let someone else live there?"

Mary immediately retorted, "If it weren't for the fact that you didn't give us more money, we wouldn't have given in to this extent. Do you think we want to?"

Afraid that Mary and I would quarrel, Ethan scratched his head and said, "Scarlett, I'll book a hotel for you first. You won't stay here for long anyway."

Mary slapped Ethan on the back.

"A hotel for one night is expensive. Are you crazy? There is a sofa at home."

I couldn't believe my ears.

I bought this house with my own money, but when I went home, I didn't have a place to stay.

I pointed at my bedroom angrily.

"I'm the landlord. You can't rent the room out without my permission, so it's invalid. I'm kicking her out today!"

As soon as I finished speaking, the door was opened from the outside.

A young and fashionable girl walked in and looked at us with confusion in her eyes.

"Ethan, Mrs. Wilson, who is this?"

I guessed she was the person living in my bedroom now.

She lived in the house I bought, but she didn't know who I was.

I said coldly, "I am your landlord. Pack up your things tonight and leave tomorrow."

Mary instantly got up from the sofa and slapped me in the face in public.

"I'm your mother. Why don't you kick me and Ethan out too? So you can live in this house alone."

I was shocked and stared at Mary's old face. She didn't show any pity or love in her eyes.

She didn't ask me why I came home or how hard it was for me outside.

It seemed that the meaning of my existence was to buy a house for my family and help Ethan.

I sneered, "Then you all move out. This is my house."

Mary was so angry that she lost her mind and rushed over to hit me.

Ethan pulled me out and looked embarrassed.

"The person living in your room is my future wife. When we met, she had no place to live, and my house hadn't been renovated yet. So Mom let her live in your room first."

As soon as he finished speaking, Mary roared angrily, "She is an ungrateful girl. Has she forgotten who worked so hard to raise her? If it weren't for me, would she be alive today and make money in the city?

"Now that she has money, she wants to kick me out right away. Fine, I'll get out right now!"

I was so angry that I rushed into the house again.

"I bought this house for you to live in when you are old. Can't I live here now?

"I bought that house for Ethan to get married. Now it has nothing to do with me?"

Mary felt as if she had been stabbed in the soft spot.

She shouted as if lost her mind, "Your father died early, and I worked so hard to raise you and Ethan. Now you want a house from me? Believe it or not, I will die in front of you!"
