His Fiancée Drugged and Tortured Me

Three hundred guests watched Phillip Wallace, the man I devoted three years to mending, slip a ring onto someone else's finger. I stood hidden behind a marble column in the Plaza Hotel ballroom, a plain black dress beneath chandeliers that blazed like interrogation lights. No one remembered the nights his hands trembled at 3 a.m. But his fiancée discovered my past—and chose to make me suffer for it. Drugged, tortured, and shattered, I refuse to remain a ghost. Now, I'm the one they should dread.

Chapter 1

Three hundred people clapped for the man I had spent three years putting back together.

I stood behind a marble column in the Plaza Hotel ballroom. Black dress. Plain. Chandeliers threw light on everything, and it felt too bright, like an interrogation.

Phillip Wallace stood on the stage with a microphone. Navy tux. Perfect jaw. Steady eyes. Nobody in that room knew those hands used to shake at three in the morning. I knew. I was the one who held them.

“Braelynn and I have known each other since we were six,” he said. “Tonight, I’m proud to announce our engagement.”

The flashes went off like gunfire.

Braelynn Kennedy floated to his side in a white gown, pale as milk. She laid her manicured hand flat on his chest. She checked the cameras first. Then she looked over his shoulder, straight at me, and smiled.

Phillip twisted his platinum signet ring once. That was his tell. It meant he was holding something down.

I kept my face still. Three years of training. I had sat across from killers and kept my face still.

He had texted me that afternoon. *Be there. Wear black. Speak to no one.* I wasn’t a guest. I was a prop. The calm, neutral doctor in the background of his perfect story.

I turned for the exit. My heels sounded very loud.

“Emerie.”

He caught up with me near the coat check. No hello. No *thank you*. He spoke the way he spoke to his lawyers.

“Your resignation goes in tomorrow. You’ll sign the NDA tonight. Nothing about my treatment. Nothing about us.”

“Us,” I said. “Is that a word we’re still allowed to use?”

“There was no *us*.” His eyes didn’t move. “There was a clinical arrangement. It’s finished.”

Something inside my chest folded in half, quietly. I looked at his hands instead of his face. The ring again. Twisting.

“And the donation?” I asked.

“Generous. For your silence.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“It isn’t an offer.”

In the parking garage, his black Bentley sat under a flickering light. Water dripped somewhere. His assistant had the papers ready. I signed on the hood of the car, and the metal was cold through the paper. My signature looked steady. I was proud of that, and I hated being proud of it.

Phillip didn’t thank me. He just got in the car.

I sat in my own car afterward with the engine off. Then I opened my phone and booked a one-way flight to London for the following Thursday. Seven days. I could survive seven days.

I was wrong about that.

Two nights later, my phone lit up. *Phillip.*

“The Kennedys are hosting a dinner Saturday,” he said. “You’ll attend.”

“I’m leaving the country.”

“Not until Thursday. Bring a date.”

I almost laughed. “A date.”

“A boyfriend. Someone Braelynn’s friends can see. I need everyone to understand you have your own life and you’re no threat.” A pause. “Don’t make this difficult. My legal team reads that NDA very broadly. It would be a shame if you became inconvenient.”

He hung up before I answered.

I stared at the dark screen. Then I called Marcus Chen.

Marcus worked down the hall from me at the clinic. He was warm, funny, and had a good-natured face. Six months ago I covered his patients for two weeks when his mother was sick. He never forgot it.

“You want me to be your boyfriend,” he said. “For one night.”

“Yes.”

“Who are we hiding from?”

“Nobody.”

He studied my hands, then my face. He didn’t push. “I’ll wear the good tie.”

Saturday, the Kennedy townhouse glowed on the Upper East Side like a jewelry box. Black iron gates. A doorman. Orchids on every surface. Marcus held my elbow. I smiled until my cheeks ached.

I slipped into the powder room to breathe. Gold faucets. Marble walls. A mirror that made everyone look expensive.

The door clicked shut behind me.

Braelynn stood there in pale pink silk, holding two flutes of champagne. She walked over slowly and pressed one into my hand. Her smile stopped at her cheekbones.

“You clean up nicely, sweetheart,” she said. “Almost like a real guest.”

The glass was cold and sweating. Her perfume sat thick in my throat, all roses and something sharper under it.

“No, thank you.” I set the flute on the counter.

Her eyes flicked to it, then to me. Just for a second, the sweetness slid off her face. Something flat looked out.

“Suit yourself.” She rubbed cream into her hands, one finger at a time, slow. “Enjoy dinner, honey. Everyone here is *so* excited to meet you.”

She left. I stood very still and counted my breaths.

At the table, I stayed careful. Water only. I watched Phillip at the head, with Braelynn’s hand on his sleeve. I watched Marcus charm an old woman in pearls. I watched a young server in a white jacket refill glasses, lean in close, and take mine away to top it off.

He set it down again. His hand was trembling, just slightly.

I noticed it. I told myself it was nerves.

I drank.

The water tasted faintly bitter. Ten minutes later, the chandeliers started to soften at the edges, and a slow heat crawled up the back of my neck.
