Chapter 5

The Ashford Pack archives smelled like dust and secrets.

I pushed through the heavy oak doors of the Victorian building that doubled as our community library, my heels clicking against marble floors that had witnessed a century of pack politics. Most visitors stopped at the main level—romance novels and local newspapers, coffee-stained study tables where teenagers pretended to do homework. But I had a different destination.

The basement level. Pack members only.

The elderly archivist, Mrs. Chen, barely looked up from her cataloging as I flashed my old pack ID. Two years in New York hadn't erased my scent signature from their system, apparently. She waved me toward the filing cabinets with arthritic fingers, returning to her ledgers without a second glance.

I'd spent three hours combing through mating contracts, land deeds, and territorial agreements. My eyes burned from squinting at faded ink and legal jargon that seemed designed to confuse rather than clarify. But persistence was a Cavanaugh trait—my grandmother used to say we were too stubborn to quit even when quitting was smart.

Then I found it.

Contract #7749. Voss/Cavanaugh Dissolution Agreement.

My hands shook as I pulled the manila folder from its slot. The paper was crisp, official, bearing the Ashford Pack seal and dated exactly two weeks before my rejection ceremony. Before Ryker had stood in front of two hundred witnesses and declared me unworthy.

The archivist slid the mating contract across the counter, and the first line read: "In exchange for the dissolution of Bond #7749 (Voss/Cavanaugh), the Hale Consortium agrees to—"

The words blurred as my vision tunneled. I gripped the edge of the wooden counter, my knuckles going white as the implications crashed over me like a tidal wave.

*Financial restructuring of Ashford Holdings debt portfolio: $2.3 million.*

*Territorial protection agreement for eastern seaboard trade routes.*

*Marriage alliance between Hale heir Serena and Ashford Alpha Ryker Voss to be completed within eighteen months of bond dissolution.*

And there, buried in subsection C, the clause that made my stomach drop through the floor:

*Should the Alpha attempt to re-establish connection with the previous mate within five years of this agreement, all Ashford territories, including Hollowcreek Sanctuary, will transfer to Hale Consortium control.*

My rejection hadn't been about strength or worthiness or any of the reasons that had eaten away at my self-worth for two years.

It had been a business transaction.

The photocopy machine hummed as I fed page after page through its mechanical maw, each sheet another piece of evidence that my entire world had been built on lies. Mrs. Chen watched with mild curiosity but didn't ask questions—pack archivists learned early that some knowledge was better left unexamined.

Twenty minutes later, I was storming through the marble lobby of Ashford Holdings with a manila envelope clutched against my chest like armor. The receptionist called after me about appointments and security protocols, but I was already in the elevator, jabbing the button for the executive floor with enough force to crack the plastic.

"He's in the private gym," Callum said when I burst past his desk. His face went pale as he took in my expression—wild-eyed and dangerous, like a cornered animal ready to bite. "Wren, maybe you should—"

"Where?"

"Forty-second floor. But he specifically said no interruptions—"

I was already moving.

The gym occupied the entire top floor, floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of Ashford's downtown skyline. But I barely noticed the view. My attention was fixed on the figure in the center of the room, attacking a heavy bag with methodical violence.

Ryker was shirtless, his body gleaming with sweat under the harsh fluorescent lights. Each punch landed with a wet thud that spoke of hours of repetitive motion, his knuckles split and bleeding. But it wasn't his obvious pain that made me stop in the doorway.

It was the scars.

Silver lines traced across his ribs and spine like lightning strikes, raised tissue that caught the light with an almost metallic gleam. Rejection sickness scars. I'd read about them in medical journals during my research phase—the physical manifestation of a wolf's biology turning against itself when forced to deny its mate bond.

He'd nearly died because of what they made him do.

"You're not supposed to be here." His voice was rough as sandpaper, but he didn't stop hitting the bag. Didn't even turn around.

"You have five seconds to explain why I'm holding a contract that proves your rejection was a business deal."

The punching stopped.

Ryker's entire body went rigid, his shoulders drawing tight with tension that had nothing to do with physical exertion. Slowly—so slowly it felt like watching a predator decide whether to flee or attack—he turned to face me.

His eyes were gold. Not the warm brown I remembered, but the molten amber of his wolf rising to the surface. The beast that had been caged for two years, suddenly scenting something it recognized.

"Wren." My name was a warning and a plea wrapped in gravel.

I held up the contract, pages rustling in my trembling grip. "Two point three million dollars. That's what they paid you to destroy us."

He moved toward me with that predatory grace that made my hindbrain scream conflicting messages—run from the dangerous Alpha, submit to your mate, stand your ground and fight. Each step sent waves of pheromones rolling across the space between us, pine and leather and something darker. Something desperate.

"You don't understand what you're dealing with," he said, still approaching. "The Hale family isn't just another pack. They're—"

"What? Criminals? Traffickers?" I backed up a step, then another, until my shoulders hit the mirrored wall. "I know about the wolfsbane ring, Ryker. I know they bought you like a prize bull."

He was close enough now that I could see the gold flecks swimming in his irises, could smell the copper tang of blood from his split knuckles mixing with his natural scent. His hands came up to brace against the wall on either side of my head—not touching, but caging me in with the heat radiating from his body.

"If they find out you have that contract," he said, his voice dropping to barely above a whisper, "they'll come for you. And I won't be able to stop them."

"What, they'll buy me too? Add me to their collection?"

Something flickered in his expression—pain so raw it made my chest tight. "They don't buy what they can't use, Little Omega. They eliminate it."

The pet name hit me like a physical blow, just like it had in his office. But this time, trapped between his body and the wall with his scent flooding my senses, my treacherous biology responded with interest instead of anger.

Heat bloomed low in my belly. My pulse quickened, and I saw his nostrils flare as he caught the change in my scent.

"Tell me you don't feel that," he breathed, his forehead almost touching mine.

I felt it. God help me, I felt everything. The phantom ache where his mark used to be suddenly flared to life, like a severed nerve ending sparking back to consciousness. The mate bond—dead for two years—stirred in the space between us like smoke from banked coals.

My lips parted, not to speak but because my body was already responding to his proximity. Every cell screamed at me to close those final two inches, to press against him and let the bond remake itself in fire and want.

Then my phone buzzed frantically in my pocket.

I fumbled for it with shaking hands, Ryker's golden eyes tracking my every movement. The War Room group chat exploded across my screen, but one message made my blood turn to ice:

*Priya: WREN. SERENA HALE isn't Ryker's mate. She's not even a wolf. She's human. Her shifter identity is completely fabricated.*

I turned the phone screen toward Ryker's face, watching as his expression shifted from desperate hunger to something that looked like the end of the world.
