Chapter 2

My palm remained flat against the sealed envelope. Adrian’s fingers hovered over the printed apology script, his knuckles white against the dark mahogany. The red recording dot blinked on the tablet, broadcasting our dining room to thousands of viewers, including board members and investors.

"Turn it off," Adrian ordered. He lunged for the tablet.

I swiped the screen first, maximizing a pre-loaded video file. "Leave it on. They deserve the truth."

Dr. Aris Thorne, the lead geneticist at Central Genetics Lab, appeared on the screen. He wore a crisp white coat, seated behind a sterile steel desk.

"Based on the samples provided," Dr. Thorne’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room, "we have completed the maternal lineage analysis."

Adrian stopped moving. His hand dropped from the tablet, hanging uselessly in the air.

"The probability of maternity between the deceased Helena Kessler and Subject A, Nora Bennett, is ninety-nine point nine nine nine eight percent," the doctor stated. "Subject B, Celeste Whitmore, shows zero genetic markers matching the maternal profile. There's no biological relationship."

The video ended. The screen faded to black, leaving only the live feed of our faces broadcasting to the waiting room.

I looked across the table. Julian lifted his head. For the first time tonight, my twelve-year-old son met my eyes. His mouth hung slightly open, the rigid anger in his posture replaced by sheer confusion.

"That's a forgery," Celeste said. Her voice wavered, high and thin. "You paid someone to make that."

"Central Genetics is the board’s approved facility," I said. "You can call them right now."

I pulled the next document from the stack. The heavy legal paper bore the gold watermarks of the Kessler Trust.

"Under the original estate terms, the biological daughter of Helena Kessler is entitled to twenty-eight percent of the holding company," I said, sliding the pages into the center of the camera frame. "That equals roughly four hundred million dollars."

Adrian stared at the numbers. A bead of sweat formed at his temple. "Nora, wait. We can discuss this offline. Stop the broadcast."

"You wanted a public trial," I told him. "You wanted the investors to see."

I uncapped my silver fountain pen.

"What are you doing?" Adrian asked, his tone shifting from commanding to frantic.

I pressed the nib to the signature line of the beneficiary waiver. "I'm signing away the twenty-eight percent."

I dragged the pen across the page, leaving a thick, black signature. I pushed the waiver toward the camera lens.

"I renounce all claims to the Kessler estate," I said clearly. "I'm retaining only one legal right: the authority to investigate the hospital switch thirty-two years ago."

Celeste stepped out from behind Adrian. The color had drained from her face, but her jaw set in a hard, stubborn line.

"If you don't want the money, why did you stay?" she demanded. "You knew you were the heir. You infiltrated my family, took a job at our company, and played the martyr for eleven years. You're just a parasite trying to look noble."

"I didn't know about the switch until three days ago," I said.

"Liar," Celeste shot back. "You stayed because you wanted to siphon our resources. You manipulated your way into the executive suite."

"I earned my place," I said.

"You earned nothing!" Celeste shouted, slamming her hand against the back of Adrian's chair. "You used my name to get ahead. You used my brother. Prove you didn't care about the wealth."

I reached into my folder one last time. I pulled out a black binder and tossed it onto the table. It landed with a heavy thud, rattling the silver anniversary frame.

"Two years ago, the Aegis Loop software failed," I said. "It caused a massive security breach."

Adrian’s eyes darted toward the tablet. "Nora, that's classified company information."

"It's public record now," I said. I flipped the binder open to the recall minutes. "I spent sixty-three days locked in the server room. I rewrote the entire architecture from scratch. I prevented a thirty-one-million-dollar loss for the investors."

I pointed to the bottom of the page. "Yet, the signature line for the crisis resolution credits Adrian and Celeste Whitmore. My name is nowhere on the document."

"You were an employee," Adrian argued, his voice tight. "Your work belongs to the company."

"I was an unpaid consultant," I corrected. "Because you told me the company was struggling and couldn't afford my salary."

I pulled a single, crisp invoice from the back of the binder and slid it across the wood. It stopped in front of Adrian.

"This is a retroactive settlement for my labor," I said. "Four million, eight hundred thousand dollars. Payable immediately."

Adrian stared at the paper. He reached out and grabbed the edge of the invoice. His thumb pressed so hard into the paper that a sharp white crease formed down the margin.

"You can't extort us on a live feed," he hissed.

"It's not extortion. It's a bill," I said. "I don't want your trust fund. I just want my paycheck."

Julian leaned forward in his oversized crested chair. His gaze dropped to the table, landing on the secondary document tucked beneath the invoice.

He blinked. He squinted at the text.

"Dad?" Julian asked, his voice cutting through the tension.

Adrian ignored him, glaring at me. "I'm not paying this."

"Dad, look at the paper," Julian insisted. He reached over and pulled the attachment free from Adrian’s grip.

"Julian, put that down," Celeste snapped, trying to snatch it back.

Julian held it out of her reach. His eyes scanned the bold print at the top of the page. He looked up, his brow furrowed in utter confusion.

"Dad, why does the company's most important patent have Mom's name on it?"
