Chapter 5

OLIVIA'S POV

The SUV was gone by morning, but the tire tracks were still frozen into the shoulder of the road.

I'd fed the seniors, wrapped the blind mare's legs, and was coming out of the staff room with a fresh roll of vet wrap when the barn door slid open and let the cold in.

Blair walked down the aisle in tall cognac boots that had never touched manure. She carried a glossy cream shopping bag with a gold logo across the front, the kind of store that didn't put prices in the window.

Gabe stopped sweeping. One of the weekend volunteers, an older woman named Patty, set down her pitchfork.

"Olivia!" Blair said, bright enough for everyone to hear. "I was so worried about you. I couldn't sleep thinking you were out here in some freezing shack. So I came to check on you."

She set the bag on the hay bale beside me, right on top of the flakes I'd just broken for Copper. Tissue paper spilled open. A tiny white onesie, the same gold logo stitched on the chest.

"Isn't it cute? Jack picked it out." She tucked her hair behind her ear, and the diamond threw a spark across the dry hay. "I figured you'd want to see. You know. Since you're part of the story now."

"Take your bag and get out of the work area," I said. "Horses eat that hay."

"I'm just visiting."

"You're standing in a barn aisle in front of a gelding who kicks. Leave."

Her phone came up so fast she must have had it ready in her pocket. The red light blinked on.

"Okay, you guys, she's doing it again," Blair said to the screen. "I brought baby gifts. That's it. And she's screaming at a pregnant woman."

Above the feed room door, a laminated sign read THIS AREA MONITORED BY VIDEO SURVEILLANCE. Blair either didn't see it or didn't care.

She lowered her voice so only I could hear.

"I got the man, the ring, and the ranch. Are you seriously going to fight me over a dirty little stable?"

---

She didn't wait for an answer. She walked past me to the row of staff lockers along the wall, where Theo had given me the end one last night. I'd left it open while I worked. Dad's saddle sat on the rack inside.

Blair ran a gloved finger along the cantle.

"Wait. Is this from Cedar Hollow?" She turned the camera toward it. "Did you steal this? Because everything on that property belongs to the company now."

I crossed the aisle and put my hand flat on the seat.

"It's mine. My father made it for me when I was sixteen. He stitched every inch of it himself, at that kitchen table you're probably redecorating."

"That's a cute story."

She hooked her fingers under the cinch strap and worked the buckle loose. The saddle shifted, sliding off the rack toward the concrete.

I caught it against my chest. Thirty pounds of leather and tree, and my cut palm split open again under the horn. I didn't put it down.

"You're bleeding on it," Blair said. "That's kind of gross."

A soft electric hum came from the end of the aisle.

Theo rolled out of the workroom and stopped in the doorway, one hand resting on the black control lever of his chair. He had a pencil behind his ear and sawdust on his sleeve, like he'd been in the middle of something.

He looked at Blair. Then at the phone. Then at me holding the saddle.

"This is a private barn," he said. "You don't touch my staff's property."

Blair smiled at him the way she smiled at waiters. "And you are?"

"The man whose barn you're standing in."

"She's a thief. And she's been harassing me since—"

"She works here. You don't." His voice didn't rise at all. "That should make the rules fairly simple."

He didn't tell her who I used to be. He didn't tell me to calm down or be the bigger person. He just turned his head and looked at me.

"Olivia. Do you want this visitor to leave?"

Nobody had ever asked me that. I'd always been the one expected to smooth things over.

"Yes," I said.

"Then she's leaving."

I set the saddle back on the rack, buckled the strap, and turned the brass lock on the locker door. The click was small, but it felt like something.

Blair's face had gone pink above the scarf. She stopped the livestream.

"Fine," she said. "Jack's already on his way anyway."

---

He showed up twenty minutes later with two men in orange vests and a tripod.

I watched through the barn door as they walked the fence line, pushing red-flagged survey stakes into the snow every ten yards. One went in right against the old wooden fence of the turnout paddock, where the blind mare liked to stand.

Jack came in holding a rolled plan under his arm. He spread it across the feed bin and tapped it with one finger.

"Harlow Ridge needs a service road for guest traffic. The approved route runs straight through here." Tap. "This barn's in the way."

"This isn't your land," I said.

"It's a dump with a mortgage, probably. These places fold the minute someone makes an offer." He looked around at the peeling walls. "Get Copper loaded. Today."

"No."

He laughed, short and ugly. "Who's going to stop me? Him?" He jerked his chin down the aisle. "You found yourself a crippled guy living in a falling-down barn, and you think that's protection? Nobody's going to fight a forty-million-dollar project for you, Liv. Nobody ever has."

My fingers closed hard around the edge of the locker.

"I took your ranch," Jack said. "Now I'll take the stable you're hiding in."

Behind me, I heard the low hum of Theo's chair coming closer. He stopped a few feet away. A thick manila folder lay on his knees, tabbed and worn at the corners.

He didn't say a word to Jack. He just looked at the survey plan for a long moment, the way he'd looked at Copper's legs last night.

Jack rolled the paper up and walked out.

---

The engines woke me before dawn.

I was out the door in my socks and coat before I'd fully understood the sound. Two yellow excavators sat outside the paddock, headlights cutting through the gray, exhaust rolling white. The nearest bucket hung six feet off the ground, steel teeth aimed at the fence.

Jack stood beside a heavyset foreman holding a radio. He lifted his hand and waved the driver forward.

"Stop!" I ran into the light, snow soaking straight through my socks. "There are horses in there! Live animals. Four seniors and a blind mare. You'll bring that fence down on top of them."

The bucket kept creeping.

Jack pulled a stapled document from his jacket and held it up without letting me touch it.

"Easement. Signed and filed. We have right of way." He smiled. "Go ahead and call the cops, Liv. See whose side they take."

The driver looked to the foreman. The foreman keyed his radio.

"Hold on."

The side door of the barn opened onto the ramp Theo had built. He rolled down it slowly, snow crunching under the tires. He wore a dark coat this time, collar turned up. The manila folder was on his lap again, a dusting of snow across the cover.

He stopped in front of the foreman and held it out.

"You'll want to read this before you touch my fence."

The foreman took it, flipped back the cover, and froze. I saw his eyes catch on the name printed at the top. Then they lifted to Theo's face, to the black signet ring on his right hand, and back down to the page.

He swallowed. He raised his radio and said, "Kill it. Kill the engines. Now."

The excavators shuddered and went quiet. In the silence, I could hear Copper calling from inside the barn.

"Mr. Calder, sir." The foreman's voice had changed completely. "We didn't know this was your property."

Jack snatched the folder out of his hands.

I watched him read. I watched the smile slip off his face one piece at a time, until his mouth was just slightly open and his knuckles had gone white on the edge of the paper.

"Calder?" he said. It barely came out. "No. That's impossible."

I looked at Jack's bloodless face. Then I looked down at the folder, at the snow melting on its cover, and at the quiet man in the wheelchair who'd handed a stranger a key without asking a single question.

Jack had called him a nobody in a falling-down barn.

For the first time, I wondered if the man who'd taken in me and an old horse had ever been poor at all.
