Chapter 2

The loft door slammed behind me with a finality that echoed through my bones. My hands shook as I reached for the zipper, the delicate lace catching on my engagement ring—the one Ethan had slipped onto my finger three years ago with promises of forever.

I yanked harder. The fabric tore.

Good.

The dress pooled at my feet like spilled milk, all that careful craftsmanship reduced to a heap of bitter dreams. I kicked it aside and walked to the bathroom, each step deliberate, measured. No tears. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

The bathtub gleamed white and empty, waiting. I gathered the dress in my arms—all those months of work, those stolen moments between spreadsheets and conference calls when I'd sketched my vision of the perfect wedding dress. The dress I'd wear when I finally became Mrs. Hayes.

I laid it in the tub like a body in a casket.

The matches were in the kitchen drawer, next to the takeout menus from all the dinners I'd eaten alone while Ethan worked late. While Ethan was with her.

The first match wouldn't light. My hands trembled too much. The second caught, its small flame dancing in the bathroom's stillness.

"Seven years," I whispered to the flame. "Seven years of making myself smaller so you could feel bigger."

The lace caught fire instantly, synthetic fibers curling and blackening. The smoke detector shrieked, but I didn't move. I sat on the cold tile floor and watched my dreams burn, the smoke stinging my eyes until tears finally came. Not for him. For the woman I'd let myself become.

By the time the dress was nothing but ash and melted beading, the sun had set. I turned on the shower, washing the remains down the drain along with the last of my delusions.

---

The next morning arrived too bright, too normal. My reflection in the elevator's polished steel showed a stranger—sharp blazer, hair pulled back severely, eyes that gave nothing away. The security guard at Ethan's building did a double-take.

"Morning, Miss Bennett. Mr. Hayes is—"

"I know where he is."

The executive floor hummed with its usual energy. Assistants scurried past with coffee and documents, carefully avoiding eye contact. They all knew. Of course they knew. Vanessa had probably sent a company-wide announcement.

Ethan's corner office commanded a view of half of Manhattan, its glass walls a testament to his need to see and be seen. He sat behind his mahogany desk, signing something, not bothering to look up when I entered.

"If you're here to make a scene—"

"I'm here to resign." I placed the letter on his desk, right on top of whatever million-dollar deal he was signing.

Now he looked up. His eyes—God, I used to love those eyes—assessed me like a line item on a budget report.

"Don't be dramatic, Olivia. You have a good position here. Stock options. Benefits." He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking. "I'm not a monster. I take care of my people."

My people. Not his girlfriend of seven years. His people.

"I don't want your charity."

"It's not charity. It's business." He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a key fob, tossing it across the mahogany surface. The Porsche logo caught the morning light. "Consider it severance. For your... discretion."

The keys landed near my hand. I didn't touch them.

"You think a car fixes this?"

"I think a car helps." He was already looking back at his papers. "The white one in the garage. It suits you."

The dismissal was clear. Seven years reduced to a transaction, a luxury vehicle to buy my silence and compliance. I left the keys where they lay.

"I'll clean out my office by noon."

"Olivia." His voice stopped me at the door. For a moment—just a moment—something flickered across his face. "The dress yesterday. It was beautiful."

I didn't turn around. "It's ash now."

---

Three days later, the invitation arrived by courier. Arthur Hayes's 70th birthday celebration at Le Bernardin. My name on the guest list felt like a joke, but the handwritten note from Ethan's mother was worse: "We do hope you'll attend, dear. You're still family to us."

Family. The word tasted like ash.

But I went. God help me, I went.

The private dining room glittered with crystal and old money. I'd chosen my dress carefully—elegant but understated, nothing that would draw attention. I should have known better.

"Olivia!" Vanessa's voice cut through the murmur of conversation. She stood by the champagne fountain, resplendent in red, her hand resting on her still-flat stomach. "So brave of you to come."

The room seemed to pause, waiting.

"Arthur invited me," I said simply.

"Of course he did." Her smile was all teeth. "Actually, perfect timing. We're short-staffed tonight." She pressed a serving tray into my hands before I could react. "Would you mind? The champagne needs passing."

The tray was heavy with crystal flutes. Around us, guests pretended not to watch.

"I'm a guest, Vanessa."

"Were." She leaned in close, her whisper carrying the scent of expensive perfume. "Abandoned women belong in the background, don't you think? Best to know your place."

Someone laughed—a bright, social sound that felt like breaking glass. My fingers tightened on the tray. One swift movement and I could drench her in champagne, ruin that red dress, wipe that smirk off her face.

But I didn't.

I lifted the tray and began to serve, moving through the crowd of Ethan's business associates and family friends. Each "thank you" felt like a small death. From across the room, Ethan watched, his expression unreadable.

This was what I'd become. This was what loving him had cost me.

But as I set down the empty tray and slipped out into the Manhattan night, something else stirred beneath the humiliation. Something that tasted like smoke and burned lace.

Revenge, I realized, would require patience.

And I had just become a very patient woman.
