Chapter 5

Hayden POV:

"Give that back!" I shrieked, my voice raw and desperate, a primal sound torn from my throat. The wooden bird, Julia's last tangible link to me, was clutched in Kingsley's hand. Rain streamed down my face, mingling with tears, blurring the world into a watery, agonizing mess.

Kingsley looked at the small carving, then at me. His expression was unreadable, a fleeting blankness that unnerved me more than his anger. He slowly extended his hand, dropping the bird into my outstretched palm. It was cold, muddy, and slightly crushed, the tiny wings splintered. He said nothing, simply watched me.

I snatched it, ignoring him, ignoring the rain, ignoring the agonizing pain in my side. I hugged the broken bird to my chest, its cold, wet wood a painful echo of my own shattered heart. I'm so sorry, Julia. I'm so sorry, Mom.

My mind flashed back to a different time, a different rain. "Hayden, are you sure about him?" my mother had asked, her voice gentle, but her eyes held a flicker of concern. Kingsley and I had just announced our engagement. She was always so protective, especially after my accident. "He' s… intense. And he has a history. I just don' t want you to get hurt."

I had laughed, brushing aside her worries. "Mom, he loves me. He really does. He' s been so amazing since the accident. He' s my rock. And he' s good for Julia. He' ll take care of us." I remembered my unwavering conviction, my starry-eyed belief that love could conquer all. I had lost my leg saving Kingsley, and in my pain, his attention, his wealth, his seemingly unwavering devotion felt like a balm, a trade-off. I had lost my ballet career, but I had gained a husband, a protector. Or so I thought.

"You just worry too much," I' d told her, pulling her into a hug. "I' m happy, Mom. We' ll be happy. I promise."

Now, standing in the pouring rain, clutching a broken wooden bird beside my sister' s fresh grave, I knew the bitter truth. Happiness was a cruel mirage.

Kingsley reached for me, his hand gentle on my arm, a hint of the old tenderness in his touch. "Hayden, let's go. You're soaking wet. You'll get sick."

I flinched away from him as if his touch burned me. "Don't you dare touch me!" I screamed, my voice raw. My teeth found his skin, tearing into the flesh of his hand. He cried out, pulling back, a streak of blood welling up.

My eyes, cold and dead, met his. "You want to know what I think, Kingsley? I think you're a coward. A pathetic, spineless coward who would sacrifice anything, anyone, for a manipulative bitch and a business deal."

His jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing. "Hayden, you're out of control. You don't know what you're saying."

"Don't I?" I challenged, my voice rising. "Tell me, Kingsley. Look at Julia's grave. Look at my mother's grave. And tell me, here, now, that you didn't know that heart was for Julia. Tell me you didn't deliberately divert it. Tell me you didn't murder my sister!"

He opened his mouth, then closed it, his gaze darting nervously towards Brooklyn, who had slowly approached, her face a mask of concern.

"What's wrong, Kingsley?" I pressed, stepping closer, my voice a venomous whisper. "Can't lie in front of the dead? Can't desecrate their memory with your pathetic excuses?" I jabbed a finger at his chest. "You callously disregarded a life, Kingsley! A human life! My sister's life! Are you happy now? Is your power trip worth this?"

He recoiled, his face pale, his lips pressed into a thin line. "There were… complications. Political pressure. You don't understand the complexities, Hayden." He turned to Brooklyn, as if seeking corroboration.

"Complications?" I laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the grey sky. "You didn't even bother to check on Julia! I begged you! I pleaded with you to just come and see her, to see how badly she needed it! And you dismissed me! You told me I was 'jealous'! You told me I was 'overreacting'!"

Kingsley stood frozen, his eyes wide, his body rigid. The rain plastered his expensive suit to his frame, but he seemed not to notice. He was silent, utterly speechless.

Just then, Brooklyn stepped forward, her hand reaching for Kingsley's arm. "Kingsley, darling, she's clearly unhinged. We should just go. Let her wallow in her self-pity."

My gaze snapped to Brooklyn, the last shred of my self-control snapping. "You!" I roared. "You snake! You engineered all of this, didn't you? You whispered your poison in his ear! You're the real monster!"

I lunged at her, my prosthetic leg momentarily forgotten, my hands once again finding her face, my nails once again raking across her skin. She shrieked, a high-pitched, terrified sound.

"Hayden! Stop it!" Kingsley yelled, finally snapping out of his stupor. He tried to pull me off Brooklyn, but I was beyond reason. My hands were wrapped in her hair, pulling, tearing, hitting.

"You'll pay for this!" I screamed, my voice hoarse. "You both will pay for this! You took everything from me! My sister! My mother's legacy! You think you can get away with it?"

Kingsley finally managed to pry my hands from Brooklyn, who was now sobbing hysterically on the ground. He held me back, his arms wrapped around me, but I thrashed against him, my laughter bubbling up, wild and manic. It was a terrifying, broken sound.

"You think you won?" I shrieked, my eyes burning into both of them. "You think this is over? I promise you, it's just beginning! I will make you both regret the day you ever crossed me! You will both pay! With your lives!"

My hand, still clutching the broken wooden bird, found a sharp, jagged piece of stone from the grave. With a guttural roar, I brought it down, aiming for Brooklyn's prone figure, her terrified eyes wide with horror.

"Kingsley, help me!" Brooklyn screamed, her voice a piercing shriek of pure terror.
