Chapter 3

"Did she really think showing up tonight would win him back?" Selena's voice blasted through the ballroom speakers, sharp and amplified.

I froze, the glossy auction catalog slipping from my fingers. It hit the marble floor with a heavy thud.

Francesco vaulted out of the velvet booth. "Cut the audio!" he roared at the sound technician in the balcony. "Turn that damn thing off!"

The speakers popped, then died. The silence that followed was suffocating. Hundreds of eyes shifted from the corner table directly to me.

Before I could turn toward the exit, Selena crossed the marble floor. She lunged, grabbing my right wrist. Her manicured nails dug deep into my skin, scratching the surface.

"What are you doing?" I asked, yanking my arm back.

She didn't answer. Instead, she threw herself backward. Her knees hit the floor hard, tearing the silk of her dress. She slapped her own cheek, the sound cracking through the quiet room, and covered her face with both hands.

"Please!" Selena screamed, her voice trembling as she looked up at the crowd. "Ms. Morelli said if I keep bothering Francesco, she'll ruin me!"

She dropped her hands. A vivid red welt stretched across her pale cheek.

"Mia!" Francesco shoved past two waiters, knocking a tray of champagne glasses to the floor. Glass shattered everywhere, the sparkling liquid pooling around his expensive leather shoes. He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around Selena.

"I didn't touch her," I said, keeping my voice steady. "She hit herself. You all saw it."

No one in the crowd spoke up. They just watched, their eyes hungry for a scandal.

Francesco stood up, shielding Selena behind his broad shoulders. His dark eyes locked onto mine, cold and unforgiving. "It seems I've spoiled you too much over the years."

"Spoiled me?" I repeated. A dry laugh escaped my throat. "You spent the last eight years ignoring me. You flaunt your mistresses in public. How exactly did you spoil me?"

"By letting you keep the Greco name," he fired back, taking a step toward me. "By allowing you to stand in this room and pretend you belong here."

"She threatened my career, Francesco," Selena sobbed, clutching the lapel of his tailored jacket. "She said she would make sure I never model again. She said she would destroy everything I worked for."

"Nobody is ruining your career," Francesco told her, his tone softening for a fraction of a second before he turned his glare back to me. "You want to destroy someone's reputation tonight, Mia? Fine. Let's play your game."

He snapped his fingers at his security detail. "Hold her."

Two men in dark suits stepped out of the shadows. They grabbed my arms, pinning them behind my back. Their grips felt like iron clamps, bruising my skin.

"Francesco, tell them to release me," I demanded, struggling against the men. I kicked backward, my heel catching one of the guards in the shin, but he didn't even flinch.

He ignored my struggle. He pulled a silver flash drive from his pocket and tossed it to the auctioneer standing on the stage. "Plug that in. Put it on the main screen."

The auctioneer fumbled with the drive, rushing to the laptop on the podium.

"What is that?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Consequences," Francesco replied.

The giant LED screen behind the stage flickered to life.

My throat closed. I recognized the file folder on the display. The title read *Rome*.

"Don't," I whispered, the fight draining from my muscles. "You promised."

Seven years ago, in our sunlit bedroom in Rome. The curtains were drawn. He had held the camera, kissing my bare shoulder. *I will keep these safe forever, Mia. Only for my eyes.* He swore it on his mother's life. He swore it while slipping that custom teardrop diamond onto my finger.

Francesco stepped up to the stage, grabbing the wooden gavel from the podium. "Open the file."

"Francesco, stop!" I screamed, pulling against the guards. "Please!"

The screen flashed. A photograph appeared, ten feet tall.

Gasps erupted across the ballroom.

It was me, wrapped only in a sheer white sheet, skin completely exposed, smiling up at the lens. The smile was so full of love, so full of blind trust. Then the auctioneer clicked the next arrow. The sheet was gone. Completely bare.

A man in a tuxedo pointed at the screen, laughing loudly. "Look at the birthmark on her thigh!"

"I never knew the ice queen had such a wild side," a woman in a green gown sneered, covering her mouth with a feathered fan.

"She looks desperate," another voice chimed in.

My knees buckled. The guards yanked me upright, their fingers digging into my biceps, forcing me to stand and face the giant screen.

"Look at it!" Francesco shouted, pointing the gavel at the screen. "You want to act high and mighty? You want to slap my guest? Show everyone who you really are."

"Stop it," I choked out, squeezing my eyes shut. "Turn it off."

"Keep your eyes open!" Francesco ordered. "Next photo!"

Another image flashed. Me, lying on the bed, my arms reaching out for the man behind the camera. The vulnerability in my eyes made me sick. The room buzzed with whispers and crude jokes. Every word felt like a physical blow.

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast. I hadn't cried since the day I mortgaged my apartment to pay off his debt. I refused to cry for him. But the tears wouldn't stop. They tracked down my cheeks, blurring the faces of the wealthy elite pointing at my naked body.

"Do we have a bid?" Francesco asked the crowd. His voice held no emotion. He scanned the room, treating my dignity like a cheap piece of furniture on the auction block.

"Fifty cents!" someone yelled from the back row.

"One dollar!" a man in a gray suit shouted, raising a numbered paddle.

Francesco didn't wait for a higher bid. He didn't ask if anyone would offer two. He raised the wooden mallet high into the air and slammed it against the block. The sharp crack echoed off the crystal chandeliers, final and devastating.

"Congratulations to this gentleman," Francesco announced, staring directly at me as he pointed the gavel at the bidder. "One dollar, for all the photos."

The guards kept my arms locked in place. My vision swam with fresh tears, the bright lights of the ballroom bleeding into distorted streaks. The words *one dollar* rang in my ears, louder than the cruel laughter surrounding me. Then, my stomach lurched—a violent, unfamiliar wave of nausea surged straight up my throat.
