High Temperature Apocalypse: Unveiling the Masks of Family Members Chapter 1
On the second day of the horrific high temperature, Cecilia brought her pregnant niece to live in my house.
There was a water shortage across the country, but the girl washed her hair with clean water every day.
Instead of blaming her, Cecilia and husband blamed me for not storing enough water.
More and more people were dying from the heat, and my husband and his family beat me up and forced me to go out to find food.
I didn't have any sun protection and died of heat at the door of my house.
I found out before I died that the girl was my husband's mistress, and that the whole family had tricked me into taking care of the girl during her pregnancy.
When I opened my eyes again, Cecilia and the mistress were occupying my bedroom.
This time, I would take revenge on them while enjoying air conditioning and a good meal.
"The weather is expected to remain hot over the next week, with the highest temperature reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Citizens are advised to reduce unnecessary outings."
I was suddenly awakened by hearing the news on TV.
Cecilia, Cecilia, was cleaning the master bedroom for her niece, Cynthia Taylor. And my clothes and belongings were thrown on the floor like garbage.
"What are you doing? This is my cousin's house. I can live wherever I want! Why don't you move out?"
Cynthia put her hands on her hips and looked at me provocatively.
My husband, Jaxon Wells, protected her. "Stop talking nonsense! It doesn't matter where you sleep. You have to make room for the guest. Get out of the way!"
I stared at those ugly faces and recalled this marriage in a trance.
Today was the fifth day after my abortion, and he couldn't wait to take his mistress back.
At the beginning, he was penniless, with no money and no house, and I accompanied him through all the hardships.
I lived frugally to take care of my family. But the hard work damaged my health. I had miscarriages every three times I got pregnant.
Right after the abortion, mistress made a fuss in the hospital.
"Other people can go back to work after giving birth. Why are you so delicate? You can't even have a baby, but you are wasting money!
"It costs hundreds of dollars a day to be hospitalized. You don't deserve it. Stand up!"
I was discharged from the hospital due to the harassment, but due to lack of rest, I developed a chronic illness and looked several years older than my peers.
When I recalled this, a dull pain in my lower abdomen brought me back to reality.
Seeing Cecilia busying around, I got furious.
In the past, she complained about her back and leg pain, and even had to wait for me to wash dishes.
The day after I was discharged from the hospital, she forced me to cook and wash clothes, and even supervised me while eating, for fear that I would be lazy.
Now Cecilia served Cynthia like a servant.
Cecilia brought fruits to Cynthia, then turned around and scolded me impatiently, "You are a city person, but have no manners at all. Cynthia is a guest. What's wrong with her sleeping in the master bedroom?
"You're so uneducated."
I'd heard this so many times.
In my previous life, Jaxon's family knew that I was concerned about reputation and soft-hearted, so they always used these words to deal with my complaints.
"Something happened at the company. I have to go out."
Not wanting to see this family causing trouble for me, I dug out my bank card from the mess on the floor and put my important documents in my bag.
"Why do you bring your documents to work? Are you going on a long trip?"
Cecilia suddenly shouted, and the whole family turned to stare at me. I smiled, "The company is giving out high temperature subsidies. I have to bring my documents to claim it."
When she heard that there was money, Cecilia's face changed immediately.
She pushed me out the door and said, "Cynthia wants to eat fruits. You can use this money to buy some for her. Get the best! Also buy some crabs. She loves them. She wants the most expensive ones!"
Before I had walked far, she chased after me. "Don't take the bus for such a short distance. Save the money. Walk there!"
...
I was not going to listen to her.
After being married for a few years, I had seen through the true colors of this family.
They always told me to save money.
Cecilia and my father-in-law brought home health products worth thousands of dollars without hesitation. Jaxon spent tens of thousands of dollars on the game. But he soon gave up the game.
Me?
I bought a bottle of water on the way up the mountain and was scolded by the family from the mountainside to the top of the mountain.
Thinking of this, I didn't want to pay attention to her, so I turned around and left. I could faintly hear voices behind me.
Cecilia said, "You will have a son, unlike that stubborn woman."
Jaxon agreed with a smile, "Yes, Cynthia is young, beautiful and has good skin. The baby she gives birth to will definitely be beautiful. She is not like the woman with hands as rough as sandpaper."
After leaving home, I went straight to the property management agency in the community.
First, I rented a small villa with a basement in the community, and then urgently ordered a few solar panels.
In two days, the temperature would soar to nearly 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature would damage the power lines, and the whole city would be without electricity and water.
Without air conditioning and running water, many elderly people and children with poor physical fitness suffocated to death at home.
At the beginning, some businesses still ventured to open for business, but after a few days, the outside world was deserted.
The soles of shoes would melt when someone step on the road. People's skin would peel off when exposed to the sun. And if people didn't have any food at home, they would starve to death.
I doubled the money and completed the rental procedures in just half an hour.
After getting the key to the villa, I ordered 500 barrels of bottled water from the water station and ordered several large-capacity freezers.
Then I immediately rushed to the largest supermarket in the city center to buy somethings.
I had a year's supply of flour, grain and oil, as well as various quick-frozen semi-finished food.
I prepared enough fresh meat, seafood, and long-lasting vegetables to deal with emergencies. I also prepared canned meat and canned fruit with a shelf life of three years.
Before checking out, I went to the imported food area.
I piled the expensive snacks and fruits that I used to be reluctant to eat, and the cakes and desserts that I once couldn't afford to eat, into my shopping cart.
After marrying Jaxon, I lived frugally and didn't indulge myself for many years.
Now I had come to realize that money should be spent on myself. I should take what was expensive and not treat myself badly.
I hired a car to transport all the things to the villa. On the way, I went to a security equipment store and bought a set of protective gear and electric batons and chain saws for self-defense at a high price.
When people were starving, they could do anything. Only when I have weapons would I not panic.
When I got home after shopping, it was already eight o'clock in the evening.
As soon as I opened the door, I heard loud cursing.
"What did you do? You come back so late, do you want to starve us to death?" My father-in-law, Samuel Wells, was lying on the sofa wearing only a pair of shorts, yelling at me while cursing.
Cecilia didn't like me. "Our family is so unlucky to have a jinx. You come home with a sad face every day!"
"Where are my fruits?" Cynthia, wearing the silk nightgown that I had just bought and had not worn yet, directly rummaged through my bag.
She was fatter than me, and the pajamas were stretched out. She complained in disdain, "The nightgown you bought is of poor quality."
I put a bag of fast food on the table and said with a smile, "I'm a little tired from working overtime. Just eat these today. I bought your fruits online, and it will be delivered to you in a few days."
My parents-in-law and Jaxon loved meat on a daily basis. For their health, I insisted on nutritional balance, but they complain instead.
Now seeing fast foods, they started eating without washing their hands.
They ate and complained.
Jaxon said disdainfully, "I have told you hundreds of times that I like the fast food at the back of the market. Idiot, you always buy the wrong ones.
"You can't even cook properly and let us starve for so long. You are the manager of a big company, but I think you are just a loser."
Samuel was sweating while eating, and he scattered garbage all over the floor.
"You can't do housework well or have children. There's nothing to like about her.
"Other people work every day, why are you the only one who's tired? You just want to enjoy a leisurely life without working!
"You're not destined to be that way! You were born to be a maid!"
The whole family had to criticize me for dinner.
I quietly went into the study to pack my things, sneering in my heart.
They ate so much junk food and would die of thirst.
I put away all the parasols and sun-protective clothing in the house into a black plastic bag, and prepared to go out as if nothing had happened.
As expected, there were only leftovers left on the table, and no one cared whether I had eaten or not.
"Wash the dishes. Don't try to hide away."
Cecilia was fat. The four hid in the master bedroom to turn on the air conditioner, closing the bedroom door tightly.
But I didn't care. This was what I'd been waiting for.
