Chapter 182

Chapter 182 – The Dual Confrontation

Georgia arranged it deliberately.

Two separate secure locations.

Two encrypted feeds.

Two people who did not know the other would be present.

David - or the man wearing David's face - connected first.

Polished suit. Calm posture. Perfect lighting.

Replacement composure.

"You requested this conversation," he said evenly.

Seconds later, Lana's feed appeared.

No corporate backdrop. No performance.

Just a quiet hotel room and a woman who looked exhausted.

Her eyes widened when she saw David.

"You said this was about James."

Georgia didn't respond immediately.

She let the silence stretch.

Let them register each other.

David's expression didn't change.

Lana's did.

"Why is he here?"

Georgia stepped into frame.

"Because neither of you has the full truth."

She locked the session. No exits. No silent disconnect.

David tilted his head slightly.

"You're escalating emotionally."

"I'm escalating transparently," Georgia replied.

Lana looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Georgia inhaled slowly.

"David's second identity isn't just corporate. It's operational. Strategic destabilization. Replacement protocols."

Lana blinked.

"That's absurd."

David's gaze flickered-just slightly-toward Lana.

Protective instinct.

Or calculation?

Georgia saw it.

"You deserve to know who you're standing beside," she said quietly.

Georgia activated a shared screen.

Photographs from the third envelope.

Military operations.

Black budget transfers.

The serpent insignia.

Lana's face drained of color.

"This is fabricated."

David didn't interrupt.

Didn't defend.

He simply observed.

Georgia zoomed in on a timestamp.

"Cross-reference this date with your charity gala in Zurich."

Lana's breathing quickened.

"He was with me."

Georgia shook her head gently.

"The public David was."

Silence.

Lana turned slowly toward him.

"What does that mean?"

David's voice remained calm.

"It means Georgia is presenting classified material out of context."

"Then give it context," Georgia snapped.

For the first time, David's jaw tightened.

"Some systems require intervention beyond legal frameworks."

Lana's voice trembled.

"Intervention?"

Georgia leaned forward.

"He's not denying it."

Lana stared at David.

Searching his face.

"Tell me she's wrong."

A pause.

Measured.

Then-

"She is incomplete."

Not wrong.

Incomplete.

Georgia felt the shift immediately.

Lana did too.

"You said you were protecting people," Lana whispered.

David met her eyes.

"I was."

Georgia cut in sharply.

"By manipulating markets? By engineering crises?"

Lana's voice broke.

"Is that true?"

David didn't answer directly.

Instead-

"You are safer not knowing operational details."

The sentence hung between them like a verdict.

Lana stepped back as if struck.

"Safer from who?"

Georgia's tone softened-but only slightly.

"From him."

David's gaze hardened.

"Careful."

Georgia changed the screen again.

Live footage.

Dominic restrained earlier.

Their father captured.

Consortium threats.

Lana covered her mouth.

"This can't be real."

David's expression finally shifted.

A crack.

Not emotional.

Strategic.

He hadn't expected Georgia to reveal that layer.

"You're jeopardizing containment," he said quietly.

Georgia locked eyes with him.

"Containment of what? Truth?"

Lana's breathing became uneven.

"Were you ever going to tell me?"

David looked at her.

And for a split second-

There was something real.

Regret?

Or merely the memory of how to perform it?

"My mandate required compartmentalization."

Lana shook her head slowly.

"Mandate?"

Georgia pressed further.

"Tell her about the replacement protocol."

Silence.

David's jaw tightened.

Georgia continued:

"Tell her there's another version of you operational."

Lana froze.

"Another what?"

David's eyes flicked toward Georgia.

"You're destabilizing a civilian."

Georgia didn't blink.

"She stopped being a civilian the moment you used her as cover."

The room felt like it was closing in.

Lana whispered:

"Am I just leverage?"

David answered too quickly.

"No."

But it lacked warmth.

It lacked certainty.

Georgia stepped closer to the camera.

"If the consortium deems him compromised, he's erased."

Lana's gaze snapped back to David.

"Erased?"

David didn't deny it.

Georgia watched Lana's world fracture in real time.

"So everything we built..." Lana's voice shook, "...was it real?"

David hesitated.

Too long.

Georgia saw the answer before he spoke.

"Emotion was not primary," he admitted.

Lana's eyes filled.

"But it existed?"

Another pause.

Georgia realized what David was doing.

Calculating which answer preserved control.

"It existed," he said finally.

Georgia moved in for the final strike.

"Then choose."

David's eyes narrowed.

"Clarify."

"Choose them," Georgia said firmly. "Expose OuroNet. Help dismantle the replacement protocol."

Lana looked at him with raw vulnerability.

"If any part of this was real... prove it."

Silence.

The longest yet.

David's breathing remained steady.

But his eyes flickered-processing variables.

Outside the feed, emergency alerts began lighting Georgia's secondary device.

Consortium countermeasures activating.

Tracking signals locking onto both video sources.

Elena's voice cut through urgently:

"They're triangulating all three of you. Disconnect now!"

Georgia ignored it.

"This is your moment," she told David. "Stay their asset... or become human."

Lana whispered:

"Please."

The word cracked.

And something in David's expression shifted.

Not strategy.

Not calculation.

Something dangerous.

He reached off-camera.

Pressed something.

Georgia's system flashed red.

Security breach.

Lana's feed glitched.

The background behind her flickered-

Then revealed a second shadow in the room.

Not David.

Not Georgia.

An armed operative stepping into frame behind Lana.

Georgia's heart slammed into her ribs.

"Lana, don't move."

David's face went still.

Too still.

He hadn't known.

Or he had.

The operative raised a weapon.

Spoke calmly:

"Emotional leverage point compromised."

Lana turned-

And saw him.

Her scream cut through the feed.

Georgia lunged toward the console-

But the connection fractured into static.

David's screen remained.

His expression unreadable.

Then-

For the first time-

His composure cracked.

Barely.

A single word escaped him.

"No."

The line went dead.

Georgia stood frozen.

Two confrontations.

One outcome.

Lana's feed gone.

Consortium breach active.

David's reaction ambiguous.

Was his "No" grief?

Or loss of asset control?

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown sender.

A single image.

Lana.

Alive.

Kneeling.

Bound.

With a message beneath:

"Dual confrontation acknowledged. Emotional variable secured."

And below it-

"Next demand pending."
