Chapter 179

Chapter 179 – The Parent's Confession

The message arrived in analog form.

No encryption.

No digital trace.

No network footprint.

A courier delivered a small, fireproof lockbox to the safehouse door at exactly 6:17 a.m.

Inside-

A single USB drive.

And a handwritten note.

"You deserve the truth. – Father."

James stared at the handwriting.

It was unmistakable.

His father had been declared dead eight years ago.

Closed-casket funeral.

Private burial.

No autopsy disputes.

Georgia's voice was careful.

"If this is manipulation, it's deeply personal."

James didn't respond.

He inserted the drive.

A video file auto-opened.

The screen flickered.

And then-

Their father appeared.

Older than James remembered.

Thinner.

Alive.

He sat in a dimly lit room, no background markers visible.

He didn't look powerful.

He looked tired.

"If you are watching this," he began, voice heavy, "then Project Succession has fractured."

James felt his breath slow.

Georgia moved closer.

"This recording was never meant for public release," the man continued. "It was insurance. A final safeguard in case the system turned on itself."

James's voice was barely audible.

"You're not dead."

The man on screen closed his eyes briefly.

"No. I was relocated."

Relocated.

Not buried.

The father inhaled deeply before continuing.

"You deserve to know how this began."

The image shifted-old hospital documents appeared beside him.

Birth records.

Twin confirmation.

Two identical boys.

James and Dominic.

"The Barnett estate was failing at the time of your birth," their father said. "Debt. Political pressure. Hostile acquisition threats."

Georgia's stomach tightened.

"So you made a deal," she whispered.

On screen, their father nodded slowly.

"A private intelligence consortium approached me. They saw opportunity in your genetics. Identical assets."

James felt a tremor move through him.

"You sold us."

The man's jaw tightened.

"I sold one."

Silence filled the room like a suffocating weight.

"Which one?" James demanded, even though part of him already knew the answer.

The father's eyes met the camera.

"Dominic."

James staggered back as if struck.

Georgia caught his arm.

The video continued.

"The agreement was structured as guardianship transfer under classified defense provisions. In exchange, the Barnett empire would be stabilized. Protected."

Protected.

At the cost of a child.

"Dominic was raised under controlled conditioning," the father continued. "Education. Psychological calibration. Loyalty training."

James's voice shook.

"And me?"

A long pause.

"You were the control variable."

The words hit harder than the confession itself.

"You were raised normally to maintain legitimacy. Public heir. Emotional anchor."

Georgia's hand tightened around James's sleeve.

"So one twin was engineered," she said quietly, "and the other was preserved."

Their father nodded.

"It was never meant to create rivalry. You were meant to operate in parallel. One visible. One invisible."

James's anger surfaced now-raw and uncontrolled.

"You sold your son."

The father's voice broke for the first time.

"I saved this family."

"By destroying it."

Silence.

Then-

"The clause you found-the single inheritance restriction-that was their requirement. Only one heir could legally claim control at any given time. To prevent consolidation risk."

James's breathing turned shallow.

Everything.

The fights.

The manipulations.

The inheritance war.

It had never been personal.

It had been engineered scarcity.

The father leaned closer to the camera.

"If you are seeing this, it means the consortium no longer trusts Dominic's compliance. And if they activated a replacement protocol, then they no longer trust you either."

Georgia's voice was sharp.

"Where is Dominic now? Is he still theirs?"

The father shook his head slowly.

"Dominic began deviating five years ago. Emotional interference. Unauthorized protection measures."

James's mind raced.

"He protected us."

"Yes," the father said quietly. "He chose blood over programming."

James felt something inside him shift.

All the rivalry.

All the hatred.

And beneath it-

A brother who had been shaped into a weapon.

The video continued.

"There is one more truth you must understand."

The lighting flickered slightly.

"The consortium did not simply buy Dominic."

A pause.

James's stomach tightened.

"They invested in scalability."

Georgia's voice was barely audible.

"What does that mean?"

The father's eyes hardened.

"Dominic was the prototype."

The screen glitched briefly.

"There are others."

James felt the world tilt.

"Other what?"

"Other identical assets."

Silence.

Georgia stepped back.

"Clones?"

The father shook his head.

"No. Not genetic duplicates."

Another file auto-opened on the screen beside him.

A roster.

Photographs.

Men who looked strikingly similar.

Surgically altered.

Conditioned.

Trained.

A program designed to manufacture identity.

"Replacement isn't singular," the father said. "It's a network."

James whispered:

"David..."

The father nodded faintly.

"David Luther wasn't just an operative. He was proof of concept."

The room went still.

Everything aligned.

David's dual identity.

The replacement asset.

Project Succession.

It wasn't about inheritance.

It was about controllable leadership.

Georgia's phone buzzed.

Breaking global alert.

"Emergency stabilization bill introduced under Luther Initiative."

James looked back at the screen.

"Why tell us this now?"

Their father's expression softened in a way James hadn't seen since childhood.

"Because I made one final decision."

A faint explosion sounded somewhere off-camera.

The father didn't react.

"I withdrew funding from the scalability program three days ago."

Georgia's eyes widened.

"You crippled them."

"I exposed them."

The video began to distort.

"They will come for me first."

James stepped closer to the screen.

"Where are you?"

The father's final words came clear despite the interference:

"The real inheritance was never the estate."

A loud crash echoed behind him.

Voices shouting.

"It was the leverage file."

The screen flickered violently.

"Find the fourth envelope."

Gunfire erupted.

The video cut.

Black screen.

Silence.

James stood frozen.

Georgia turned slowly toward him.

"There were three envelopes."

James swallowed hard.

"Which means someone else has the fourth."

At that exact moment, every device in the safehouse powered down.

Total blackout.

Then-

Backup generator kicked in.

One monitor flickered back to life.

Live feed.

A masked operative inside their building.

Holding a familiar black envelope.

Stamped with the serpent.

The operative looked directly into the camera.

And spoke a single sentence:

"Asset Barnett. Collection phase has begun."
