Chapter 2

“She fainted outside,” Adrian’s voice explained coolly.

Footsteps clicked closer across the marble floor, followed by a sigh wrapped in false concern. “Oh, you poor dear,” Margot murmured. “You’ve always been so fragile, Elara. Maybe you should start eating properly.”

Her manicured fingers reached out to smooth my hair, as though fixing a doll that had fallen out of place. “You ought to rest, sweetheart. All this charity work, the summer heat—it’s simply overwhelming for someone of your… disposition.”

Someone like me?

I bit down hard on my tongue to keep from responding.

Then came another voice. Declan. Calm, even, professional.

“Elara,” he said softly, “you’re probably dehydrated. I’ll ask the kitchen to send something refreshing. Coconut water should help.”

When I met his eyes, they carried the same warmth I had trusted for years—reassuring, steady, dependable. But tonight, I saw it for what it was.

A performance.

And the bitter truth sank in.

I had never been part of their circle. I had only been orbiting it.

---

Sleep refused to come that night. My mind played old memories on repeat, cruel and unrelenting—my father shouting, my mother’s tears, Adrian’s voice whispering promises in the dark.

“Walk out that door with him, Elara, and you’re no daughter of mine!”

“Don’t be scared, baby. You’ll never be alone again—I’m your family now.”

I’d believed every word. I had bet my future on those lies.

He’d built me a greenhouse, too. Said I reminded him of orchids—delicate, rare, and beautiful. It stood beside the mansion, all glass and white steel, climate-controlled with precision. Each week, he’d arrive holding a new bloom.

“This one’s from Kyoto,” he’d say. “We should visit Japan next spring.”

Or, “Found this beauty in Ecuador—you’d love it there.”

He labeled every flower after the place we were supposed to see together.

Back then, I thought it was love—a man nurturing something fragile, protecting what he cherished most.

But now I understand.

That greenhouse was never a token of affection. It was a cage.

A perfectly curated display where I was the exhibit.

He dictated everything—the lighting, the soil, the temperature, the view—and convinced me it was all for my comfort. I wasn’t his gardener. I wasn’t even his muse. I was just another prize in his glass menagerie.

Then she appeared.

Alessia.

She stepped into the greenhouse like she owned the air inside it, eyes sweeping across the orchids with a knowing smirk. Her laugh was light, cruel, deliberate.

“So this is what he gave you?” she mocked, her gaze drifting over the petals. “You thought this was love, Elara? You were just another flower in his collection.”

Her eyes met mine—sharp, superior.

“You’re a placeholder,” she said, lips curving into a blade of a smile. “I’m the real Mrs. Marlowe.”

Heat flushed through me; my pulse thundered. “That’s not true…” I stammered, backing into the glass wall. “You’re lying.”

And then he stepped in. Adrian. Standing behind her, immaculate in a tailored suit, face unreadable. The same man who once cupped my cheeks and told me I was his forever.

My hands trembled as I reached toward him. “Adrian… tell her she’s wrong. Tell her I’m your wife. I’m your—”

He didn’t even look at me.

He simply slid his hand into hers and walked away, leaving me behind like I was nothing but a stain on his past.

“Adrian!” My voice cracked, breaking into the humid air. “Adrian!”

My scream shattered—and I woke up. Heart pounding, skin slick with sweat.

He was sitting beside me, shirtless, tattoos glowing faintly under the moonlight. “Bad dream?” he asked, voice calm, hand trailing across my back.

I swallowed hard, my throat dry. “Who… who am I to you, Adrian?”

He laughed quietly, leaning close to pinch my nose like I was a child. “You’re Elara. My girl. The one I always come home to.”

Liar.

“Really?” I wanted to ask why, if I meant anything, he forged our marriage. But before the words left my mouth, his phone buzzed on the nightstand.

The name on the screen made my stomach twist.

Alessia.

Of course.

He grabbed the phone, offering me a quick squeeze of the hand. “We’ll talk about the papers later, okay? Just… business stuff.”

He was already answering before he left the room.

“Alessia, hey. I’m on my way. Don’t move.”

Minutes later, my phone rang. It was the Horizon Youth Foundation.

“Miss Ardent, a couple’s shown interest in adopting Nikolai. Mr. Marlowe mentioned you and he were planning to take him in. Could you drop by?”

Nikolai. The quiet little boy Adrian had been unusually protective of.

His son.

I changed clothes in a daze and drove over, feeling like a hollow version of myself. The center smelled of disinfectant and freshly printed paper. My heels echoed down the hallway, every step heavier than the last.

Then I saw him.

Adrian.

Perfect in a black suit, standing at the base of the stairs, looking every inch the man the world adored. I lifted my hand before I could stop myself—an instinct from a time when I believed he was mine.

But she beat me to it.

Alessia ran into his arms like a scene from a melodrama, sobbing, clinging to him as if she had every right to. “You’re here,” she cried. “Adrian, please, don’t let them take Nikolai away!”

He wrapped her close, one hand cradling her head. “No one’s taking our son,” he promised, his voice deep and firm. “He’s staying with us.”

My lungs forgot how to work.

“I don’t want him calling anyone else Mom and Dad,” she whimpered.

“He won’t,” Adrian said. “Nikolai’s going to carry my name. Everyone will know who his family is.”

Her tears sparkled as she lifted her face toward him. “Legally, we’re still married… but Elara—”

He cut her off with a steady voice. “I only married Elara to protect you. While you were abroad. It kept you safe.” He even sounded noble. “She doesn’t deserve to get dragged into this.”

Alessia tilted her head, sweetness dripping like poison. “I’m not here to fight for titles. I know my place.”

He brushed her tears away, whispering, “Don’t say that. You gave me Nikolai. You’ll always belong in this family. My mother still asks about you every day.”

His mother.

The same woman who once clinked glasses with me at charity events and called me “the light of Adrian’s life.”

The woman who sent me birthday cards, gifts, and warm smiles.

But I remembered the subtle jabs. The way her gaze hardened when I wore flats instead of heels. The snide reminders of Adrian’s ex. The offhand comments—

“Alessia used to tailor his suits, dear. You should ask her where she had them pressed.”

The pretense was gone now.

Margot had made her allegiance clear.

Alessia was the chosen daughter-in-law.

And me? I was just a polished placeholder in their perfect family portrait—

the beautiful pause before the real story resumed.
