Chapter 2

Ninety minutes after tearing up my plane ticket, I pushed open the front door of our silent house.

My phone buzzed in my hand.

"Tell me you didn't actually let them get on that plane," Sarah Jenkins said the moment I answered.

I walked straight into the study. "I'm standing in my hallway. I need you at your office in twenty minutes."

"Mara, it's Saturday. Did Ethan's server crash again?"

"He took Chloe Bennett to Disney World instead of me. They wore matching family shirts. Toby called her Vacation Mom."

Silence filled the line. Then I heard keys jingle.

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

"Do you need me to call the police?"

"No. My marriage is dead, not my pulse."

"I'm opening the office. Bring bank statements, tax returns, property records, corporate documents, and anything showing what you contributed to Vance Technologies. Do not warn Ethan."

I ended the call and knelt beside the mahogany bookshelf. Behind a row of old hardcovers was the latch Ethan had forgotten existed. I pressed it, and the hidden panel clicked open.

Inside sat the pieces of my life I had kept separate from the marriage: pre-marital asset records, the passbook for my sole savings account, copies of the licensing agreements for the original Vance brand package, and an ivory envelope from Horizon Travel Group's Toronto headquarters.

I pulled out the envelope.

Six weeks earlier, Horizon had offered me a senior strategy role. I had nearly declined without telling Ethan. The salary was more than enough to support myself, and the work would put me back in the industry I had left seven years ago.

I had told myself moving to Toronto would disrupt Toby's life.

At Gate 4B, Ethan had shown me how little he worried about disrupting mine.

I carried three suitcases into the bedroom and opened them on the rug.

For the first time in years, I packed for myself.

I took the tailored navy suit from the back of the closet. I added two sheath dresses, winter boots, my mother's gold earrings, my professional portfolio, and the framed certification Ethan once called "cute" before asking me to rewrite his investor deck.

I left the designer handbags he had bought after arguments. I left the diamond bracelet he gave me when Toby was born after missing the first twelve hours of labor. Gifts offered as compensation suddenly looked like receipts.

My phone lit up with a message from Ethan.

Landed. Toby is fine. Stop sulking. We will talk when I get home.

A second message arrived beneath it.

Chloe says you embarrassed her at the gate. You owe her an apology.

I took screenshots and forwarded both to Sarah.

Then I opened our shared cloud drive.

Folders filled the screen: investor presentations, launch plans, crisis memos, brand decks. My work was everywhere. Ethan's name sat on every cover page.

I downloaded the original files I had created before our marriage and copied the metadata showing authorship. I did not alter or delete anything. Sarah had taught me enough over the years to know that clean evidence mattered more than a satisfying act of revenge.

Twenty minutes later, I was in her downtown office.

Sarah met me in jeans and a blazer, her hair still damp from a rushed shower. She did not hug me or offer sympathy. She slid a legal pad across the conference table.

"Start at the airport. Exact facts. No interpretation."

I told her about the invented server emergency, the matching shirts, Toby's "Vacation Mom" nickname, Ethan's demand that I go home, and the ticket I tore apart.

Sarah's pen moved without stopping.

"Affair?" she asked.

"I don't have proof of sex. I have proof he lied for a month to take another woman on our son's birthday trip and presented her as family."

"Good. We will not allege what we cannot prove. What do you want?"

The question was harder than I expected.

Not what did Ethan deserve. Not what would hurt Chloe. What did I want?

"I want out," I said. "I want my pre-marital assets protected. I want a forensic review of the joint accounts. I want the company to stop using my intellectual property without compensation. And I want a custody arrangement that keeps Toby stable."

Sarah looked up. "Do you want to take Toby today?"

My throat tightened.

"He is with his father on a scheduled family vacation," I said. "Ethan has his epinephrine pens, inhaler, insurance card, and medical instructions. I am not going to manufacture an emergency because I am angry."

Sarah nodded once. "That answer will matter later."

She pulled a separation packet from her printer.

"The house is jointly titled," she explained. "The operating accounts are marital assets, so you cannot simply empty them. We can request temporary restrictions on extraordinary spending and preserve records. Your personal account and documented pre-marital property stay separate unless commingling becomes an issue."

"And the brand assets?"

"If the original licensing agreement is as narrow as you remember, we can revoke future use after proper notice. We do this cleanly, not theatrically."

I signed the engagement letter.

Sarah circled a line on the page. "Do not cancel utilities. Do not lock him out. Do not touch his company servers. Do not post about Chloe. Give him nothing he can use to paint you as unstable."

"Understood."

"Now the Toronto offer. Is it still open?"

I placed the ivory envelope on the table.

Sarah read the first page and whistled softly. "This is not an escape plan. This is a career."

"I know."

"Then call them."

I stepped into the hallway and dialed the number at the bottom of the offer letter.

Jonah Brooks, Horizon's division head, answered on the third ring.

"Mara Cole," I said. My maiden name felt unfamiliar and right at the same time. "If the position is still available, I would like to accept."

There was a brief pause.

"It is," Jonah said. "Can you be in Toronto next week?"

I looked through the glass wall at Sarah laying out separation forms in neat stacks.

"Yes."

When I returned to the conference room, Sarah turned the final page toward me.

"This is the notice of separation. Signing it does not end the marriage today. It establishes the date you stopped living as a couple and preserves the position we are taking on the assets."

I picked up the pen.

For seven years, my signature had appeared beneath Ethan's plans.

This one belonged only to me.

I signed Mara Cole across the bottom line.
