Chapter 1

The annual company gala had devolved into a game of truth or dare. The losers had to spill a secret.

The young assistant lost. He raised his glass with a grin. "Ms. Pruitt and I share a little secret. Back when she was recovering after giving birth, her milk came in so bad it was killing her. I'm the one who helped her with that."

The room went dead silent.

Someone muttered, "So... is Ms. Pruitt's body as good as they say?"

The assistant licked his lips, savoring the memory. "Oh, absolutely. And the best part? No strings attached."

Marina Pruitt, sitting right beside him, swatted his arm with a laugh. "You and that big mouth of yours!"

My fists clenched under the table.

It wasn't long before I lost too.

Every pair of eyes in the room turned to me. I kept my voice steady. "I've got a secret of my own. I'm planning to divorce Marina Pruitt."

……

Dead silence.

Then the room erupted.

"Godfrey's always been so easygoing, though. He saw Ms. Pruitt holding hands with Tristan at the mall and didn't even say anything. What changed?"

"Come on, man. Tristan was just helping Ms. Pruitt with her postpartum recovery. Don't take it so hard!"

Marina Pruitt fixed her gaze on me. "Godfrey Simmons, it was a joke. Are you really that thin-skinned?"

I swallowed my rage. "This has nothing to do with being thin-skinned. I want a divorce."

Tristan Lawrence's eyes instantly turned red. "Godfrey, I didn't mean anything by it. I was just trying to liven up the party. I had no idea you were so sensitive..."

I looked at him, a cold smile tugging at my lips. "Then let me crack a joke of my own. If I'm not mistaken, your sister has a red birthmark shaped like a plum blossom on her left thigh. And her figure's not bad either..."

"You—"

Tristan's face flushed crimson. He turned to Marina, eyes brimming with wounded innocence.

Crack.

Marina's palm connected with my face so hard my head snapped to the side. "Godfrey Simmons, are you done making a scene?"

I pressed my hand to my stinging cheek and stared at her.

She hit me. For an outsider, she hit me.

"You were spying on Tristan's sister?" Her voice shook with fury. "Get on your knees right now and beg him for forgiveness!"

A laugh tore out of me, bitter and wet. "When he humiliates me, you tell me to be the bigger person. When I fire back, you want me on my knees? Is that how this works?"

I turned and walked toward the door.

Marina screamed at my back. "If you walk out that door without kneeling and apologizing, I will strip you of every title you hold in this company!"

"Fine." I didn't stop. "Go ahead, Ms. Pruitt. I'll be waiting for the termination letter. And a divorce agreement will be on your desk."

I walked out.

The door shut behind me.

"Ms. Pruitt, Godfrey is so petty. And he insulted my sister!" Tristan's voice carried through the wall, thick with self-pity.

"I mean, think about it. We've kissed in your office. When you got drunk, I wiped you down and changed your clothes. If he knew about that, he'd lose his mind!"

"But that's just part of my job as your assistant! Godfrey sees dirt everywhere he looks."

Marina's voice came next, soothing. "He's just jealous. Don't let it get to you."

Then, to comfort Tristan, she kissed him. Right there, in front of everyone.

"Honestly, Ms. Pruitt and Tristan make a way better couple."

"For real. Tristan's brought in so many clients for the company."

"Godfrey hasn't closed a single deal lately. He's dead weight. Can't do anything right."

A chorus of sycophantic voices filled the private room.

Tristan took the opportunity to slap Marina's backside. Several times.

I stood frozen outside the door, watching through the gap. Hot tears spilled down my face before I could stop them.

I went home and packed my things.

Just as I finished, my phone buzzed.

A video message from Tristan Lawrence.

Marina lay sprawled across a hotel bed, eyes glazed and half-shut. The top two buttons of her blouse were undone.

Then came Tristan's voice, dripping with smugness. "Hey, Godfrey. Ms. Pruitt had a little too much to drink, so I brought her to a hotel to rest. Once I've wiped her down, I'll head out. Don't be jealous now!"
