Chapter 3

Lyra’s heart raced as she moved silently through the forest, her breath merging with the mist that hung in the air. The dense shadows of the trees offered cover, and she slipped among them like a ghost, keeping to the edges of the familiar trails. Tonight, she’d finally decided to follow him, to see with her own eyes what her instincts had already warned her of.

It wasn’t long before she picked up Kieran’s scent, unmistakable even amidst the damp earth and pine. Her senses tingled, and she crouched low, tracking him as he moved farther into the woods, away from the pack's territory. As she continued, her own heartbeat pulsed louder in her ears, yet she stayed focused, her wolf’s instincts guiding her steps. She could feel her bond with him flickering, like a weak flame struggling against a fierce wind. And as the distance grew, so did her dread.

The wind shifted, and suddenly, she caught a familiar scent—one that filled her with an icy rage. Selena. Lyra’s body tensed, every nerve in her being alive with a sense of betrayal. The scent was laced with the wild, untamed edge of a rogue, an outsider who had no place in their world. And yet, Kieran had let her in. He had chosen her.

The underbrush thickened, but Lyra pressed on, feeling her wolf’s growl rise within her, a warning of the storm gathering inside. Just ahead, she finally spotted them. Kieran and Selena stood close, their bodies angled toward each other in a way that was intimate, almost tender. Lyra watched as he reached out, brushing his fingers along Selena’s arm, his gaze softened in a way that tore at the very fabric of Lyra’s heart.

A chill spread through her veins, turning the fire of her anger into something colder, sharper. She felt the mate bond weaken further, thinning with every second she watched them together. Wolves were bound to their mates through more than love—it was an instinct, a bond forged by nature, one that no wolf took lightly. But seeing him here, touching Selena as he once touched her, Lyra felt that bond splintering, tearing apart piece by piece.

She stayed hidden, her nails digging into the bark of the tree as she forced herself to keep watching. This was what she needed. She needed to see him for what he truly was now—a mate who had turned his back on her, a father who had chosen a rogue over his own pack, over his own child.

Kieran leaned in, whispering something to Selena that Lyra couldn’t hear, but she didn’t need to. The intimacy between them was clear, and it sent a ripple of pain through her chest, sharp and raw. Yet in that moment, something else rose within her. Not despair, but strength. The strength of her wolf, of her bloodline, of her role as a future mother.

The pup within her stirred, as if sensing her resolve. Her wolf growled, a deep, primal sound that resonated in her soul, reminding her of what truly mattered. Kieran’s betrayal was like a poison that had seeped into her life, but she wouldn’t allow it to touch her pup. She wouldn’t let this tainted bond weaken her spirit. She had the power to protect her child, and she would do it without him.

Carefully, Lyra slipped back into the shadows, her senses heightened, her mind set. Tonight had given her the clarity she needed. She knew now that Kieran was lost to her. The mate bond, though still lingering, was no longer the connection it once had been. She would find the strength to sever it, to remove him from her heart and soul, if that’s what it took.

Back in the den, Lyra sat alone, breathing in the silence. Her wolf simmered with energy, a fierce determination that pulsed in her blood. She had always imagined Kieran by her side, imagined raising their child as a family within the pack, but that vision was dead now. And she would not mourn it. The only future she needed to worry about was her child’s, a future free from deceit and disloyalty.

As dawn approached, Lyra made a promise to herself. She would face Kieran, but she would do so on her own terms. Her wolf had warned her, her instincts had sounded the alarm, and she had listened. She would confront him, but not in anger—not in a way that could harm her or her child. She would be calm, unbreakable, showing him that his betrayal had not shattered her. In fact, it had only made her stronger.

The pack stirred around her as the sun rose, wolves waking and greeting each other, the familiar rhythms of pack life resuming. She moved through the den quietly, her gaze fierce and focused. She would let him come to her, she decided. When he returned to the den, she would have everything she needed—the evidence, the knowledge, the resolve.

And as if on cue, Kieran appeared at the edge of the camp, his face blank, his eyes avoiding hers. He moved past her without a word, and Lyra felt the last fragile thread of their bond pull taut, then snap. There was nothing left between them. Her wolf growled softly, her instincts flaring, and she held her ground, keeping her expression calm as he walked by.

In that moment, Lyra understood that the bond she once held so dearly was gone. She was free. Free to protect herself, free to put her pup first, free to reclaim her strength. Kieran could continue his path with Selena, but it would not affect her any longer. She was her own wolf now, strong, unbroken, and ready to face whatever came next.

As the pack moved around her, she felt a new surge of determination. She was Lyra, a mother, a warrior, a wolf of unwavering strength. And no betrayal, no rogue, no broken promises would ever take that away from her.
