Chapter 1

The wind rustled through the forest, filling Lyra’s senses with scents both familiar and strange. The scents of the pack, her family, her mate, all blended together—a constant comfort and source of strength. Yet lately, she’d felt something dark hiding within those scents, a trace that made her wolf’s instincts bristle. And with every passing day, a sharp, gnawing sensation grew in her stomach, an inexplicable dread she couldn’t shake.

Kieran, her mate, had been acting… different. Wolves often sensed shifts in their pack members, but a mate’s connection was something else entirely. It ran deeper than thought, rooted in instinct, in shared strength and purpose. A mate was supposed to be a constant—a safe place in a life filled with danger and raw survival. But Kieran had been growing distant, slipping out of the pack’s main den without explanation and returning with scents clinging to him that weren’t of the territory she knew so well. There was something hidden beneath his skin, a new darkness in his scent, and it was driving her wolf mad.

The changes in Kieran’s behavior had started subtly enough, too subtle to call him out on, but her wolf noticed every detail. His gaze, which once held warmth and fire, had turned cool. The way he used to pull her close, his body shielding hers, was now only a distant memory. Their bond, once a source of strength and solace, felt as brittle as dried leaves underfoot. And in a pack where trust and loyalty were paramount, even the smallest crack could lead to disaster.

It was close to midnight when she decided she couldn’t ignore the signs any longer. Lyra’s swollen belly ached as she moved carefully, her protective instincts fierce with the new life growing within her. Even now, she could feel her pup’s heartbeat through their connection, the gentle thrum of a life both separate and a part of her. Her mate should have been by her side, helping her through the final months of her pregnancy. But lately, he was always somewhere else. Somewhere she couldn’t reach him.

One night, driven by desperation, Lyra followed him, slipping through the dense undergrowth as quietly as her pregnant form would allow. Her heart pounded as she trailed Kieran, every step heightening her sense of unease. The moonlight barely broke through the canopy above, casting shadows that flickered with her movements. She caught his scent on the breeze, stronger now, and felt the familiar pull of their mate bond tugging her forward.

But there was another scent, too—sharp, wild, and unfamiliar. A scent that raised the hackles along her spine.

She paused, crouching low as she saw him emerge from the trees. He moved with a confidence that felt foreign, as though he were shedding the skin of the mate she’d known and taking on another. And then she saw her—Selena. The rogue, with her dark hair and piercing eyes that held none of the warmth of a pack wolf. Selena was a rogue who had appeared on their borders not long ago, seeking refuge after her own pack was destroyed in a raid.

Lyra had been wary of the newcomer, her wolf on edge at the strange wolf’s scent, but Kieran had vouched for Selena, insisting that every wolf deserved a second chance. But watching them now, Lyra felt the ground shift beneath her. Kieran reached out, his hand brushing Selena’s arm in a way that felt intimate, possessive. His gaze, cold and distant with Lyra, softened with Selena in a way that made her stomach twist.

Lyra’s wolf snarled within her, a low growl she barely suppressed. The scene felt like a nightmare, a twisted version of reality that she couldn’t escape. Every instinct screamed at her to charge forward, to confront him, to demand answers. But something held her back, an inner voice that told her to wait, to understand the full extent of his betrayal before she acted. She had more than herself to think about now; she had her unborn pup, and she wouldn’t jeopardize their safety out of sheer rage.

She backed away slowly, her steps soundless against the forest floor as she retreated. Once out of sight, she shifted back into her human form, her chest heaving with a mix of anger and heartbreak. Every step back to the den felt like a weight pressing down on her, an unbearable burden of knowledge that was quickly becoming too much to bear. She wrapped her arms around her stomach protectively, her wolf’s instincts warring with her human side.

Back at the den, she lay down, but sleep didn’t come. Her mind replayed the scene over and over, each memory a dagger twisting deeper into her heart. The Kieran she knew would never have betrayed her, but the Kieran she’d seen tonight was a stranger. Someone she could no longer trust with her heart, let alone her life or her pup’s.

As dawn broke, Lyra felt a cold clarity settle over her. She would confront him when the time was right, but she needed to protect herself first, to plan for whatever lay ahead. Her pup’s safety was her priority now, and she wouldn’t allow Kieran’s betrayal to endanger the life growing within her. Whatever feelings she had for him were secondary to her duty as a mother, as a wolf, and as a protector of her bloodline.

Lyra rose from her bed, her hand resting on her belly. Her mind was set. She’d find a way to sever the bond if she had to. She’d find a way to raise her pup on her own if it came to that. But she wouldn’t let him continue to deceive her, to put her and her unborn child at risk for the sake of a rogue’s affections.

With a deep breath, she embraced the quiet strength that had always been a part of her. She was a wolf, born and raised in the heart of the pack. Betrayal or not, she would survive this. And if Kieran thought he could turn his back on her without consequence, he would soon learn that Lyra was far stronger than he’d ever given her credit for.

As she steeled herself for what lay ahead, she felt a surge of determination. Kieran may have chosen his path, but so had she. Her loyalty now belonged solely to her pup, her future, and her own survival. And no one—not even her mate—would stand in the way of that.
