Chapter 3

The harsh glare of fluorescent tubes stung my eyes the moment I opened them.

The rhythmic beep of an electronic monitor filled the sterile room, steady and relentless. A plastic tube ran into the back of my hand, taping cold needles to my vein.

"Don't sit up too fast," a woman's voice warned.

A doctor in blue scrubs stepped into view, lowering a metal clipboard. Her nametag read Dr. Evans. She adjusted the clear bag hanging on the IV pole before looking down at me with furrowed brows.

"My stomach..." My throat felt like sandpaper. "The baby?"

"Still there," Dr. Evans replied quietly. "Barely."

A sharp rush of air escaped my chest. I pressed a trembling palm flat over my lower belly.

"You suffered acute uterine contractions," Dr. Evans continued, her tone grave. "Between the high-proof liquor on an empty stomach and severe emotional shock, your body went into crisis. You were hemorrhaging internally when the paramedics brought you in. If the ambulance had arrived five minutes later, you would have lost the pregnancy completely."

"Is the baby safe now?"

"Safe is an overstatement," she said, leaning against the edge of the bed. "The fetal sac has a minor tear. You are at extreme risk of a spontaneous abortion. Any sudden spike in blood pressure, any trauma, and it’s over. You need bed rest, Mrs. Thorne. Complete quiet."

The door swung outward, hitting the wall with a firm crack.

Elias stepped into the room.

His charcoal suit was pristine, the tie knotted flawlessly beneath his chin. He held an unlit cigar in one hand and his smartphone in the other, not a single hair out of place. He smelled of cold autumn air and tobacco.

Dr. Evans glanced between us, her mouth tightening into a thin line. "Ten minutes, Mr. Thorne. She needs sleep."

She closed the door behind her, leaving us in the suffocating quiet.

I looked at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. A tiny, pathetic spark ignited in the dark corners of my mind. He had followed the ambulance. He was standing in my room at two in the morning. Maybe seeing me collapse had shaken him. Maybe the reality of blood on the restaurant floor had shattered his cold veneer.

"Elias," I whispered, fighting the tremor in my lips. "The doctor said... she said I nearly lost the child. We almost lost it."

Elias didn't cross the room. He didn't come to the bed. He stopped three feet away, sliding his phone into his pocket and looking down at me with pure disgust.

"Then it would have saved us the appointment on Monday," he said.

The room seemed to freeze. The air turned so thin I couldn't draw it into my lungs.

"What?"

"You heard me," Elias said, his voice dropping into a harsh, grating register. "Do you have any idea what you did tonight?"

I stared at him, my knuckles turning white against the thin hospital blanket. "I had a medical emergency. I was bleeding."

"You threw a tantrum," he sneered, closing the distance until his shadow fell over the bed rails. "Prescott walked out of the restaurant before the main course was even cleared. Eighty million dollars, Mae. Gone to a sixty-day review because my wife decided to stage a dramatic fainting spell over a single sip of bourbon."

"I told you I was sick!" I cried, the burn returning to my throat. "I told you I was carrying your child! You forced that glass down my throat to impress an old man!"

"I told you to act like a partner!" Elias snapped, slamming his palm onto the metal footboard. The frame shuddered under the blow. "I pay for your life. I put a roof over your head, clothes on your back, and kept your name clear of every scandal. Your only obligation under our contract was to show up, smile, and stay composed. Instead, you smashed crystal onto the floor and made me look like an amateur who can't manage his own household."

I looked at his polished face, waiting for a crack. A flicker of guilt. A breath of remorse.

There was nothing. Just the cold, unyielding calculation of a predator whose profits had been threatened.

"A child," I whispered, the word cracking in the middle. "It has a heartbeat, Elias. It almost stopped beating tonight because of you."

"And I told you twice already," Elias replied, leaning over the rail until his cold gray eyes locked onto mine. "I do not want this child."

The monitors beeped faster, the machine shrilling in alarm at the spike in my pulse, but he didn't care.

"You think a baby makes you irreplaceable?" His lip curled into a cruel sneer. "You think you can trap me into playing house? If you want to keep breathing the air in my penthouse, you terminate it Monday morning. If you refuse, I will call the building superintendent before dawn, change the biometric locks, and freeze every credit line attached to your name. You'll leave with the clothes on your back, and I will sue you for breach of confidentiality."

I stared up at him.

The man I had spent twelve months cooking for. The man whose shirts I pressed by hand because he disliked the dry cleaner's starch. The man whose cold silences I endured, hoping that one day, one quiet evening, he would see me as something more than an inconvenient ghost in his hallways.

Twelve months of swallowing insults.

Twelve months of watching other women walk through his front door.

And tonight, while my blood soaked a restaurant rug and our child fought to survive inside me, his only concern was the timing of a signature on a corporate merger.

The noise in the room faded into nothing. The erratic thumping in my chest suddenly leveled out.

The pain in my stomach didn't vanish, but the blinding ache in my heart went entirely, blissfully cold.

I didn't cry. The tears drying on my cheeks felt like someone else's sorrow.

Instead, a quiet, soundless laugh escaped my mouth.

Elias straightened, his eyebrows pulling together in irritation. "What is wrong with you?"

I reached down to my left hand. The plain silver band felt heavy, like an iron shackle I had worn for far too long.

I twisted the metal over my knuckle. It slipped off with a faint tug.

"What are you doing?" Elias asked, his jaw tightening.

I reached out and dropped the silver ring into the plastic water cup on the bedside table. It hit the bottom with a muffled *plink*.

"Keep the penthouse," I said.

My voice didn't shake. It was smooth, flat, and empty of warmth.

Elias glared at the cup, then snapped his gaze back to me. "What did you just say?"

"Keep the penthouse," I repeated, meeting his steel-gray eyes without blinking. "Keep the credit cards. Keep Prescott's eighty million dollars."

"Mae, stop acting hysterical—"

"I want a divorce."

The two words hung in the air between us, sharp and final.

Elias let out a sharp, mocking scoff, though his posture stiffened. "A divorce? You don't have a penny to your name. Without me, you couldn't afford the cab fare to leave this borough, let alone an attorney."

"Then I'll walk," I answered.

"You're bluffing," he sneered, crossing his arms. "You've clung to me like a stray dog for a year. You begged me to notice you three hours ago."

"I did," I admitted, my voice shockingly level. "I was an idiot. But I am not an idiot anymore."

Elias leaned in, his voice dropping into a dark, low threat. "You walk out of this marriage, and you walk out with nothing. Not a dime of the settlement. No alimony. No references. Nothing."

"Send the paperwork to the nurse's station," I said, turning my face toward the white wall. "I'll sign it before discharge."

"Mae—"

"Get out of my room, Elias."

He stood motionless beside the bed for several long seconds. The silence grew heavy, toxic, and suffocating.

Then, without another word, he spun on his heel and walked out, his heavy footsteps fading down the tiled corridor until the hall fell dead quiet.

I lay back against the stiff hospital pillows, staring up at the empty ceiling.

For the first time in an entire year, my chest didn't ache when he left.

I gently rested both hands over my stomach, feeling the faint, fragile warmth beneath my palms.

He thought he had stripped me of everything.

He didn't realize that in walking away, he had finally handed me my freedom—and I was never looking back.
