Chapter 2

The wheels of my suitcase whispered against the polished marble floor as I pulled it toward the stairs. Each step I took felt heavier than the last, but I didn’t slow down. My heart was pounding, not from regret, but from the anticipation of finally walking away.

I had rehearsed this moment in my head countless times over the years, though I never imagined it would truly come to this. And yet, here I was—descending the staircase with my bags in hand on what was supposed to be our sixth wedding anniversary.

The front door clicked open.

Anthony stepped inside, still in his crisp shirt and tie, his briefcase swinging at his side. His eyes caught mine instantly, narrowing at the sight of my luggage.

“Kamilla?” His voice carried disbelief, tinged with irritation. “What the hell are you doing?”

I tightened my grip on the handle, refusing to falter. “Leaving.”

His laugh came out sharp, incredulous. “Leaving? On our anniversary? Don’t be ridiculous. Put that bag down.”

I reached the bottom of the stairs, standing tall, chin lifted. “I’m not being ridiculous, Anthony. I’m being sane for the first time in six years.”

The smirk faded from his lips. “What are you talking about?”

I let the silence stretch for a beat, savoring his confusion, before pulling out my phone. “You’ve always underestimated me, Anthony. You thought I was blind. That I would never see the truth.”

He stiffened, eyes flicking to the phone in my hand. “What truth?”

I tapped the screen. The video lit up, and the sound of a woman’s sultry laugh filled the foyer. Maris Rascal’s laugh. His laugh followed, low and arrogant. The video showed them—his hands gripping her waist, their mouths pressed together, lost in the kind of passion I hadn’t seen from him in years.

Anthony’s face drained of color. He stepped closer, his voice lowering into a growl. “Where did you get that?”

“I was there,” I answered coolly, pressing pause on the screen. “Outside the study hall door. I saw everything. And I recorded enough to remind myself that I’m not crazy.”

His jaw clenched. “You—” He stopped, running a hand through his hair as if scrambling for control. “You’ve misunderstood. It was a mistake, Kamilla. Just—just a lapse in judgment.”

My laughter cut through him, sharp and bitter. “A lapse? You told her I was an airhead bitch, Anthony. That I would never know.” My voice trembled, but it wasn’t weakness—it was fury restrained. “You reduced me, our marriage, our years together, into nothing more than a joke whispered between stolen kisses.”

Anthony’s expression hardened, his arrogance rushing back to mask his fear. “You think one little video is enough to end everything we’ve built? You’ll regret this. Without me, you’re nothing.”

I straightened my spine, shoving the phone back into my bag. “I don’t want to be with you anymore. You disgust me, Anthony!”

He stepped forward, trying to tower over me, but I didn’t flinch. “You’re not walking out on me, Kamilla. Not like this.”

“Yes, I am,” I whispered, my voice steady despite the storm in my chest. “The papers are already on your desk. This conversation is just a formality.”

His nostrils flared, rage twisting his features. “You’ll regret this,” he repeated, but there was a crack in his voice now, an uncertainty he couldn’t hide.

I picked up my suitcase handle again, brushing past him toward the door. “Oh, yeah? You know what…the only regret I have,” I said, pausing long enough to meet his eyes one last time, “is wasting six years of my life on you.”

He smirked, striding toward my direction. “You have the decency to leave me after everything I’ve done for you? You are a nobody before you met me!”

As much as I wanted to clapback, I didn’t. We stared at each other as the deafening silence hovered over us. For a moment, I studied his face, yet there was nothing but contempt in his eyes. No remorse. No more hope for us. I stood on my ground and walked away. The echo of my heels marked the beginning of my freedom.
