Chapter 4

The candle flame quivered—mirroring the tremble in my own fingers. I kept my gaze fixed on it, refusing to blink as I breathed out the name no one else would ever hear aloud. My little girl. No birth certificate. No resting place. No songs to lull her to sleep. Only the name carved quietly into my chest and the tiny blanket now resting beside the flickering light—the only object that had ever touched her skin.

I whispered a prayer, even if I was certain God had stopped listening to women like me—wives turned invisible, mothers left with empty arms, hearts torn apart and stitched back together with deception.

When the wick steadied, so did I. I stood. There were things I needed to do.

Inside our walk‑in closet, I gathered every single item Dominic had ever gifted me—the perfumes he said smelled like “us,” the heels he loved seeing me in, the bags, the dresses, the small tokens that once made me feel chosen, cherished. Looking at them now, they were nothing but props. Evidence of a life I’d been tricked into believing belonged to me.

I dragged out the suitcases from the highest shelf and began packing, each item dropped inside like I was burying fragments of the woman I used to be.

I was halfway through zipping the first suitcase when his voice pierced the air behind me.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?”

I turned slowly, deliberately. “I’m going to burn them.”

His brows knitted. “Burn what?”

“All of it,” I said softly. “Everything you ever gave me. Every trace of this… whatever this is.”

His eyes snapped wide in alarm. “Vanessa, wait—this is because of what happened yesterday, isn’t it? You misunderstood. I didn’t mean it the way it sounded.”

I didn’t respond. I didn’t have the strength to act like I believed anything anymore.

He hurried across the room, dropping to his knees as he wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, clinging like he could still keep me. “I’m sorry, okay? I panicked. I was overwhelmed. Julian—he’s my cousin’s boy. And since my cousin’s gone, I have to take care of him… him and Isabelle.”

My body went rigid. “And does that responsibility include hurting your own wife just to protect them?”

He winced, silent.

“That’s what I thought,” I whispered.

He shook his head desperately. “No, Vanessa, it’s not like that. Isabelle doesn’t have anyone. She’s fragile right now. And Julian… he needs a father figure. He’s going to be my son soon.”

My breath hitched. “What do you mean, your real son?”

I already knew. I only needed to hear him lie to my face one more time.

“I’m planning to adopt him,” he said, as if it were an errand. “So maybe you could try being nicer to her? She’s been through hell.”

I stared straight into his eyes, my voice turning sharp enough to cut. “And what if I don’t want to?”

His jaw twitched. “What is going on with you lately?”

A bitter laugh almost escaped me, but I swallowed it.

“Nothing,” I said, icy. “I’m just hurting. You seem to forget I’m allowed to feel that.”

How could he expect anything else? How could he expect me to stay gentle, understanding, loving—when the child I had dreamed of holding had been ripped from me, torn out of my body while I was conscious—while he played hero to the woman who had replaced me?

Isabelle. The woman he claimed he was merely “helping.” The mother of a child he proudly introduced as his “soon‑to‑be adopted son.”

Adopted?

Please.

He hadn’t even bothered crafting a proper lie. I’d seen the look he gave Julian—affection tangled with guilt, possessiveness, fear. A connection that went much deeper than duty.

Julian wasn’t his cousin’s.

He was Dominic’s.

And I—because of what he had masterminded—could never give him another child.

He had stolen that from me.

My baby. My womb. My future. All of it gone.

He rubbed his palms over his face, acting like he was the one worn down, then forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Listen… how about dinner tonight? Just the two of us. Let me fix things.”

He had always been like this—patching broken promises with soft apologies, slapping duct tape over wounds he himself created. But the illusion didn’t work on me anymore.

I paused. Then nodded faintly. “Fine.”

But deep inside, I already knew the truth: nothing he said, offered, or pretended tonight would ever undo what he had destroyed.

And I would remember.

Dinner was at one of those dimly lit places Dominic loved—the kind where waiters tiptoed and the wine cost more than my old monthly salary. He performed like an actor, smiling warmly, flirting as though we were still at the beginning.

But I was no longer that woman.

He talked. I nodded. He praised how I looked. I offered a hollow smile.

Beneath the table, my phone buzzed.

Tristan: Everything is set. Yacht videos. Hospital audio. We have enough to take him down. I’ll fetch you in two days.

Justice. Cold. Precise. Necessary.

“What’s that smile for?” Dominic asked, his eyes narrowing.

“Nothing,” I replied, sliding the phone into my lap.

He lunged across the table, snatching it from my hands. “Who are you texting while I’m sitting here?”

“Give it back.”

“Unlock it.”

I stared at him. “It’s our anniversary.”

He smirked. “Of course. Then why isn’t this opening? May eleventh, right?”

“Wrong.” I let a thin smile curl on my lips. “Maybe that’s the date you celebrate with your mistress.”

His expression twitched.

“What the hell are you talking about?” he said with a shaky laugh. “You’re the only woman I love.”

He set my phone down and leaned back like nothing happened.

Then his phone rang, and all the color drained from his face.

“What? Julian? What do you mean he’s missing?”

He shot up so fast his chair nearly toppled. No explanation. No apology. No concern for the wife sitting across from him.

Just ran.

I watched the empty space he left behind. He always chose to flee when things fell apart.

I finished my wine. Then went home.

The next morning, I was sipping lukewarm coffee in the kitchen when the front door crashed open.

“Vanessa Clarke?” an officer barked.

I froze. “Yes…?”

Two policemen grabbed my arms before I could move.

“What—what are you doing?! Why are you dragging me out?!”

And then I saw him.

Dominic.

Standing by the door like a stranger, eyes filled with disgust.

“That’s her,” he told the officers. “Take her to the station.”

“Dominic?!” I choked. “What is going on?!”

“You know exactly what this is,” he snapped. “You arranged Julian’s kidnapping!”
