Chapter 4

The man who kicked my studio door open hadn’t come to kill me. He had come to hand me a thick cardstock envelope and point me toward a black town car idling at the curb.

Now, I sat in the waiting room of Vertex Capital. Twenty minutes bled away. The minimalist leather sofa offered zero comfort, and the silence in the penthouse suite felt heavier than the smog outside.

The frosted glass door swung inward.

He wasn’t the man I expected. No fleece vest, no silver hair, no forced, folksy smile. Raymond Chen looked about a decade older than me, his dark suit impeccably tailored but missing a tie. The top two buttons of his shirt were undone, giving him a look of someone who had been working for thirty hours straight.

He didn't offer a handshake. He dropped a manila folder onto the glass coffee table between us.

"Nora Shen," he said. His voice carried a low, steady cadence.

"Mr. Chen."

"Raymond." He sat in the armchair opposite me, pulling a single sheet of paper from the folder. My resume. He flipped it to the back. Blank. He flipped it to the front again.

"You have a gap," Raymond noted, his eyes darting across the page. "Three years where you officially exist nowhere on paper."

"I was raising a child and running a household."

"You were building an empire from a basement," he corrected. He reached into the folder again and slid three rectangular slips of paper across the table. "Look at these."

I leaned forward. They were pay stubs.

One from a freelance coding mill. One from a remote data entry firm. The last from a bakery in San Jose. All dated 2019.

"How did you get these?" I asked, my voice dropping.

"I just handed your husband a billion-dollar valuation," Raymond said, leaning back. "I own the background check. I own the servers. Right now, I own the air he breathes."

He pointed a long finger at the bakery stub. "Out of these three income streams, how much did you use to subsidize his operating costs?"

I stared at the faded ink of the bakery logo. The smell of yeast and burnt sugar hit my memory, instantly followed by the phantom ache in my swollen ankles from standing behind that register.

"That is irrelevant to your IPO."

"Answer the question, Nora."

"I don't have to explain my marriage to you."

"I didn't ask about your marriage. I asked about the burn rate."

I clamped my mouth shut. I expected him to push, to interrogate me the way Ethan’s lawyers had. I expected him to ask why a software architect with my skillset was selling sourdough to pay for server space.

Instead, Raymond stood up. He walked over to the whiteboard mounted on the far wall, grabbed a black marker, and uncapped it.

He wrote a single figure.

*$42,850.*

He drew a sharp line underneath it.

"That’s the exact deficit between his seed money and the AWS invoices from that year," Raymond said, turning to face me. "You covered it. Down to the cent."

A strange, dry laugh escaped my lips. It echoed in the sterile room, sounding entirely wrong for the moment. But I couldn't stop it.

Being seen through by a stranger was a unique kind of humiliation. He treated my sacrifice like a math problem. There was no pity in his dark eyes. No condescension. No judgment.

With Ethan, I always had to justify myself. I always had to scream that I wasn't an idiot, that I just loved him, that we were a team. I spent years twisting myself into knots to explain why I stayed in the background.

Raymond didn't ask why. He already knew the math. It made my throat ache worse than any insult could have. I didn't need to defend my love to him, because he didn't care about love. He cared about numbers.

"You carried the company," Raymond stated, dropping the marker onto the tray. "He pitched to investors while you kept the lights on."

"He was the face of the operation," I managed to say, gripping the edge of the sofa. "The investors wanted a visionary. I gave them one."

"He was a mascot. You were the architect." Raymond walked back to the table. He didn't sit down this time. He picked up the manila folder and pulled out a thick, bound document. He pushed it directly into my hands.

"What is this?" I asked, staring at the Vertex Capital letterhead.

"Your new reality."

I read the title printed in bold black ink. *Chief Architecture Consultant*.

"I don't work for Ethan anymore," I said, dropping the packet onto the glass. "I’m divorcing him. His lawyers made it very clear my contributions are considered 'legacy' and irrelevant."

"His lawyers are fools," Raymond countered smoothly. "You won't be working for Ethan. You’ll be working for me."

"Why?"

"Because his code is a mess. Because the kill switch you built into the legacy system proves you still have backdoor access. And because I refuse to let a billion-dollar investment tank because a CEO couldn't keep his wife happy."

"I don't want his money, Raymond. I just want my grandmother's ring back. I want to take my son and disappear."

"Small change," he said, his tone sharpening. He slid the contract directly in front of me. The first page already bore my name. "You have six weeks. Then Ethan’s IPO roadshow begins."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice tight.

He didn't answer. He didn't outline a threat or a consequence. He just tapped his index finger against the middle of the page.

"Read line seven."

I hesitated. My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag. I looked down at the open document on the table.

I flipped past the cover page, scanning the dense legal text. My eyes found the seventh clause.

The words blurred for a second, then snapped into sharp focus.

*Clause 7: Intellectual Property and Patents.*

I read the first sentence, my pulse hammering against my ribs.

*Upon commencement of this agreement, Vertex Capital recognizes Nora Shen as the primary patent holder, granting immediate joint ownership of all backend architectural assets currently utilized by the firm.*

I snapped my head up, staring into Raymond's unblinking eyes. He wasn't just offering me a job.

He was handing me the detonator to my husband's entire empire.
