Chapter 1

"It was a journey from zero to one," Ethan’s voice boomed from the smartphone propped against a bowl of waxen fruit. "A solitary climb, fueled by vision and the kind of late nights that break most men."

I stood at the kitchen island, the scent of roast chicken filling the room, though my appetite had vanished ten minutes ago. On the screen, the blue light of the IPO gala reflected off Ethan’s perfectly tailored tuxedo. He looked every bit the visionary CEO the media craved.

"But you weren't entirely alone, were you, Ethan?" the interviewer asked, her voice a sugary lilt.

The camera panned out. Ethan reached to his side, his hand finding a waist that wasn’t mine. He pulled Chloe, his 'Special Assistant,' into the frame. She was wearing a silk gown the color of a bruised plum.

"No," Ethan said, his eyes crinkling in that way that used to make my heart skip. "Chloe was the spark. When the code failed, when the investors slammed the door, she was the one who stayed up until dawn with me. She’s the unsung architect of this victory."

The live chat on the side of the screen scrolled so fast it was a blur of emojis.

*Chloe is a queen!*

*Power couple goals!*

*Who is the wife again? Some housewife?*

I stared at the screen. My name wasn't mentioned. Not once. Not for the initial algorithm I wrote in our cramped apartment while I was eight months pregnant. Not for the three years I spent managing the books and the HR disasters while he played the face of the company.

"Mom? Why is Dad on the phone?"

I jumped, the cold marble of the island biting into my palms. Felix stood in the doorway, his school tie loosened, holding a tablet. He was ten, and he was far too observant for my liking.

"He’s celebrating the company going public, honey," I said, my voice sounding like it belonged to someone else. "It’s a big day for him."

Felix walked over and peered at the screen. He watched Ethan laugh at something Chloe whispered in his ear.

"Is Dad rich now?" Felix asked. "Tommy at school said Dad is a billionaire. Does that mean we’re moving?"

"Money doesn't change where we live, Felix. It just means Dad will be busier." I reached out and flipped the phone face down on the counter. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator.

"He didn't say your name," Felix said quietly.

"He’s busy. There are a lot of people to thank."

"But you’re the one who fixed his laptop when it crashed last month. You’re the one who told him to hire that guy from Google."

I forced a smile that felt like cracking plaster. "Go wash up for dinner, Felix. Your father won't be home until late."

"Is he coming home at all?"

"Felix. Bathroom. Now."

He lingered for a second, his eyes searching mine, before he turned and trudged out of the kitchen. I waited until I heard his footsteps fade down the hallway before I reached for the phone again. I shouldn't have. I should have thrown it into the garbage disposal.

Instead, I turned it back over.

The livestream was still going. They were opening champagne now. The golden liquid bubbled over the rim of the glasses, spilling onto the stage. Ethan was beaming, his arm draped over Chloe’s shoulders with a casual intimacy that hit me like a physical blow.

I picked up a lemon from the cutting board. I needed to finish the salad. I needed to do something with my hands before I started screaming.

I grabbed the paring knife. It was a professional-grade blade, a gift from Ethan three Christmases ago when he still remembered I liked to cook.

*The unsung architect,* he had called her.

I set the lemon down. My hand was shaking, just a tremor, but enough. I pressed the blade down, intending to slice a thin wedge. The knife slipped.

It didn't hurt at first. There was just a sharp, cold sensation, followed by a sudden warmth.

I looked down. A deep red line had opened across the tip of my index finger. The blood was thick and bright, dripping onto the yellow rind of the lemon, then splashing into the white porcelain sink.

I didn't move. I didn't pull my hand away. I just watched it.

The pain finally arrived, a throbbing heat that synchronized with my heartbeat. It was a relief. For the last hour, I had been feeling a strange, hollow sensation, a sense of internal collapse that I couldn't put a name to. This pain was different. It was sharp. It was undeniable. It was real.

I realized then that I wasn't surprised. I had been waiting for this day. I had seen the way his phone stayed locked and face-down on the nightstand. I had smelled the expensive perfume that wasn't mine on his collars. I had watched him slowly erase me from the company’s history, one press release at a time.

Knowing it was coming didn't make the reality any less of a humiliation.

I turned on the faucet. The cold water hit the cut, sending a jolt through my arm. The blood swirled in the drain, pink and diluted.

"Mom? I forgot my—"

Felix was back. He stopped at the edge of the island, his gaze locking on the sink.

"You're bleeding," he said, his voice rising.

"It’s just a slip, Felix. I’m fine." I grabbed a paper towel and wrapped it tightly around my finger. "I told you to wash up."

"The phone started making a weird noise," he said, reaching past me. Before I could stop him, he snatched the smartphone off the counter.

"Felix, give that back!"

"Wait," he said, his brow furrowing as he stared at the screen. He held the phone up, zooming in on the livestream with his thumb and forefinger. "Mom, look at her hand."

I tried to grab the device, but he dodged me, his eyes wide.

"Is that Grandma’s?" he asked.

I froze. The paper towel was already soaked through with red. I looked at the screen over his shoulder.

The camera had zoomed in on Chloe as she held up her champagne flute for a toast. The stage lights caught the jewelry on her right hand. It was a vintage ring, an intricate gold band set with a large, square-cut emerald surrounded by tiny diamonds.

My breath stopped.

I knew that ring. I knew the weight of it. I knew the slight scratch on the underside of the band where my grandmother had dropped it on a marble floor in 1954.

Ethan had told me six months ago that the ring needed to be cleaned and appraised. He said he was putting it in the safe-deposit box at the bank because the insurance policy had lapsed.

"That’s your ring," Felix whispered, his voice trembling with a child’s sudden realization of a wrongness he couldn't fully grasp. "Why is she wearing your ring, Mom?"

On the screen, Chloe laughed, tilting her head back as Ethan leaned in to whisper something in her ear. She touched the emerald, twisting it around her finger with a possessive, casual grace.

"Mom?" Felix looked up at me, his face pale. "Why did Dad give her Grandma's ring?"

The paper towel fell away from my finger, heavy with blood. I didn't answer him. I couldn't. I just watched the woman on the screen toast her victory with my inheritance, while my husband’s hand slid lower, resting firmly on her hip.

The champagne looked cold. I had never felt more like I was burning.

"Felix," I said, my voice deathly quiet. "Give me the phone."

"Are you going to call him?"

"No," I said, reaching out with my uninjured hand. "I’m going to take a picture."

On the screen, the gala host stepped forward. "And now, a special announcement from our CEO. Ethan, the floor is yours."

Ethan stepped to the microphone, his smile widening as he looked directly into the camera—directly at me.

"Tonight isn't just about the company," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of practiced intimacy. "It's about new beginnings. And there's someone here who deserves a very special thank you."

He reached for Chloe's hand, the emerald ring flashing like a green eye in the spotlight.
