Chapter 2

I woke to the sound of voices outside my window. The morning sun filtered through the curtains as I rubbed sleep from my eyes, my body still aching from yesterday's humiliation. The mate bond in my chest throbbed like an open wound.

"They're here," my wolf whispered inside me. *Danger. Threat.*

I knew without asking who "they" were. Parker and Ariana had arrived at the Moonstone Pack house for the treaty negotiations. My grandfather had insisted they stay in our guest wing—a privilege usually reserved for honored allies, not rejectors of sacred bonds.

I dressed quickly in running clothes, knowing the morning pack run would begin soon. Despite everything, I refused to hide away like I had something to be ashamed of.

When I reached the gathering point, most pack members were already there. Parker stood tall among them, his dark hair gleaming in the morning light. Beside him, Ariana looked fragile and beautiful in a way that made my stomach turn.

"Attention," Parker called out, his Alpha voice carrying across the clearing. "Before we begin today's run, I have an announcement."

The pack members quieted, their eyes darting between Parker, Ariana, and me.

"Ariana is still recovering from yesterday's... excitement," Parker continued, placing a protective hand on her shoulder. "She will be joining our run, but in a special way."

Ariana leaned into him, her eyes downcast in a perfect performance of vulnerability. "I'm sorry," she whispered, just loud enough for everyone to hear. "I don't want to hold everyone back."

Parker's eyes found mine, cold and challenging. "I'll carry you," he told Ariana, then turned to address the pack. "Sloan will run at the back with the Omegas today."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Byron, standing near the front, took a step forward, but stopped when Parker's gaze pinned him in place.

"But I'm—" I started.

"You're nothing," Parker cut me off. "Just a rejected mate. Run where you belong."

My wolf howled in outrage. *We are Alpha blood! We run at the front!*

I watched as Parker shifted into his massive silver wolf form, his muscles rippling beneath his coat. Ariana climbed onto his back, her fingers tangling in his fur as she nestled against him.

"Begin!" Parker commanded.

The pack surged forward, a wave of fur and muscle. I stood frozen for a moment before forcing myself to shift. My white wolf emerged, smaller than Parker's but still larger than most others—a testament to my Alpha heritage.

I took my place at the back of the pack, running alongside the Omegas who gave me sympathetic glances. With each breath, I inhaled Parker's scent mixed with Ariana's—a deliberate humiliation.

*We will survive this,* my wolf assured me. *We are stronger than they know.*

"Sit down, Sloan," my grandfather ordered as I entered the meeting room later that morning.

Parker's parents sat at the long table, their postures rigid with authority. Former Alphas of Silverclaw, they still carried themselves with the confidence of rulers.

"We've come to discuss the... situation," Parker's mother said, not quite meeting my eyes.

"The alliance must be preserved," my grandfather added. "We've prepared a contract."

A thick document slid across the table toward me. I opened it, scanning the legal jargon until the true meaning became clear.

"This says I'm to be Parker's concubine?" My voice trembled with rage. "To bear his children while Ariana keeps the title of Luna?"

"It's a practical solution," Parker's father said smoothly. "Ariana is too delicate for childbirth. The pack needs heirs."

"And what happens to my children?" I asked, my hands shaking.

"They would be raised as Ariana's," Parker's mother replied. "You would have no rights to them."

Something snapped inside me. Heat flooded my veins as I stood up, the chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"Get out," I said, my voice dropping to a register I'd never used before.

The room fell silent. My grandfather's eyes widened in shock.

"Get. Out." The words came out as a roar, my Alpha voice emerging for the first time.

Parker's parents recoiled as my aura flared around me like golden fire. With trembling hands, I tore the contract in half.

"Sloan!" My grandfather half-rose from his seat.

"I will not be a breeding mare," I snarled. "I will not give up my children. And I will not accept this insult to my bloodline."

The whispers started that afternoon.

I heard them as I entered the cafeteria—hushed voices that died when I approached.

"She used her aura on me," Ariana's voice carried from the center table. "It was so sudden—I couldn't breathe."

I froze, my lunch tray trembling in my hands.

"I was just walking by," she continued, her eyes wide with false innocence. "And she attacked me with her Alpha power."

"That's a lie!" Byron's voice cut through the murmurs. "Sloan was nowhere near you!"

Parker's head snapped up, his eyes finding mine across the room. "Is that true?" he demanded, rising from his seat. "Are you so jealous that you'd attack a defenseless Omega?"

"I didn't—" I started.

"Silence!" Parker's voice cracked like a whip. "You're nothing but a bitter, rejected mate. Get out of my sight."

As I turned to leave, I caught Ariana's smile—a flash of triumph quickly hidden behind a mask of pain.

My wolf growled within me. *This isn't over.*
