He Pushed Me Down the Stairs for Her

Chapter 2

I went back for the leash. That was all. I thought if I found the leash, some store receipt, anything with a name on it, I could trace where he'd sent Biscuit. I was standing on the landing between the second and third floor when Darren came up behind me, blocking the stairwell door.

"You need to leave," he said. "You don't live here anymore."

"I know," I said. "I'm looking for his leash."

"It's a dog leash, Lilly. Let it go."

Something in me finally cracked open all the way. "You keep saying that. Let it go. Like I'm the one being unreasonable." My voice climbed the stairwell, bounced off concrete. "You sold an eleven-year-old dog to a stranger. You didn't even ask me."

"He was affecting Maya's health."

"Her name is Mikaela," I said. "And she doesn't have an allergy. She never did."

His jaw tightened. That was the first time I'd said it out loud, and I watched it land somewhere behind his eyes — not guilt, just calculation, the search for a new script.

Then her voice came from the top of the stairs, thin and gasping. "Darren?" One hand at her throat. "Darren, I can't— my chest—"

He didn't even look at her yet. He looked at me instead, and something in his face went flat and cold, like he'd decided I was the obstacle standing between him and the only thing he actually wanted.

"Get out of the way," he said.

"I'm not in your way," I said. "I'm on the landing."

He put both hands on my shoulders and shoved.

I don't remember deciding to fall. I remember the railing missing my hand by an inch. I remember the edge of a step against my spine, then my head, then a white flash and a sound like a dropped melon, dull and wet. Then I was at the bottom, on the concrete, and the ceiling was tilting the wrong way.

Something warm ran down past my ear into my collar. I lifted my hand and it came back red.

Above me, Darren's feet appeared on the stairs. He stepped over me — one foot, then the other, careful not to touch the spreading edge of the blood — and kept going up. "Maya, baby, I've got you," I heard him say, and then the sound of him lifting her, her breathy little moan against his shoulder, and the front door opening, and the front door closing.

I lay there and listened to the building go quiet.

I don't know how long I was out. I know I came back once to the sting of the cold floor against my cheek, and once more to the sound of a small dog barking, muffled, through a door somewhere close. Then hands on my shoulders — gentler ones — and an old woman's voice saying, "Oh my God. Oh my God, honey, stay still, I've got you, I've called for help."

Eleanor Finch. I would learn her name later, at the hospital, from a nurse. Her terrier had been sniffing at the gap under the stairwell door for ten straight minutes, she said, whining at something. She'd almost ignored it.

Nineteen minutes. That's what the paramedic report said, later, when my mother asked. Nineteen minutes between the shove and the ambulance.

They put fourteen stitches along my hairline. I remember the tug of the needle more than the pain, oddly. I remember a nurse asking, gently, is there someone we can call, and me staring at the ceiling tile for a long time before I said no. Then, quieter: my mother's number.

Judith got there before Cooper. She didn't say anything at first — she just sat on the edge of the bed and took my hand and held it the way you hold something you're afraid might break further if you squeeze too hard. Her eyes were wet but she didn't let anything fall. I think she was saving that for later, for somewhere private.

Cooper stood at the foot of the bed with his coat still on. He listened. I told it all — the kiss on the terrace, the dog, the stairs, the way Darren's feet had stepped around the blood like it was a puddle on the sidewalk. My father's face didn't change once. Not at the kiss, not at Biscuit, not even at the part about being stepped over. He just listened, the way you listen when you're building a case, filing every detail into a drawer you intend to open later.

When I finished, he nodded once, like he was confirming something he already suspected. Then he walked into the corridor and took out his phone.

Through the gap in the door I could see the shape of him, backlit by fluorescent light, phone at his ear. Four minutes, the clock on the wall told me. He never raised his voice. He never even seemed to change his tone. He spoke the way he always spoke — short, even, unhurried — and somehow that was so much worse than if he'd shouted.

When he came back in, he slid his phone into his pocket and looked at me, not Judith.

"It's handled," he said.

That was all. I didn't ask what handled meant. I already knew, in the marrow of my bones, that by morning Darren Chapman would wake up to a world that no longer recognized his name.
