Chapter 3

The weekend arrived with a heavy silence. The air in the house felt thick. Saturday night, Cristian insisted on a movie to "bond as a family." The living room was dark. The TV screen cast blue and silver shadows across the walls. A loud cartoon played on the screen. I sat on the far edge of the sofa. I kept my knees pulled up slightly, my arms wrapped loosely around my stomach as a shield.

Madalyn sat between us. She held a large bowl of popcorn in her lap. Her stuffed rabbit was wedged beside her leg. Cristian watched the screen, laughing at the colorful animals.

"I want more butter," Madalyn whispered.

Before I could move, she lunged across the cushions. She didn't reach for the bowl on the coffee table. She threw her entire body weight sideways. Her bony shoulder rammed hard into my stomach.

A sharp ache shot through my abdomen. I gasped and curled forward. My hands clamped over my belly instantly. Panic flared in my chest.

Madalyn leaned in close. The TV was loud, masking her voice. Her breath smelled of artificial butter. "Accidents happen," she whispered. Her tone was pure ice. It didn't sound like a child at all.

"Laila? What’s wrong?" Cristian asked. He leaned forward, blocking the blue light from the TV.

I gritted my teeth. The pain was fading into a dull throb, but my heart raced wildly. "She hit my stomach. Hard."

Madalyn immediately dropped her chin. Her lower lip wobbled perfectly on cue. "I was just reaching for the popcorn, Daddy. I tripped on the blanket."

Cristian let out a heavy sigh. He didn't check on me. He didn't ask if the baby was okay. He just patted her knee softly. "It’s dark, Laila. She just lost her balance. Don't make a big deal out of nothing."

I stared at the side of his face. My knuckles turned white against my shirt. I stayed silent for the rest of the movie. The cold reality was settling deep in my bones.

Tuesday morning came. It was the day of my first prenatal ultrasound. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror. I brushed my hair and smoothed my shirt. I felt a flutter of nervous excitement. Today, we would hear the heartbeat. I wanted Cristian there. I needed him to hold my hand. I hoped seeing our child on the screen would wake him up. It would remind him of us.

The bedroom door creaked open. Cristian walked in. He wore his casual gray sweatpants and a wrinkled t-shirt. He wasn't dressed for the clinic.

My stomach dropped. "You aren't ready."

He stopped at the edge of the rug. His right hand reached up. He rubbed the back of his neck. It was his tell. "Laila, I can't go."

"It’s our first ultrasound," I said. My voice was tight. "We planned this for weeks."

"I know. But Maddie is having a panic attack." He looked away from me, staring at the floorboards. "She woke up crying. She thinks I’m going to leave her like her mother did. She’s hyperventilating in the guest room."

"I am your wife," I said slowly. "I am carrying your child. I need you."

His jaw tightened. He glared at me. "And she is a traumatized orphan who has no one else! Why do you always make me choose? The doctor will just rub some gel on your stomach and take a picture. You’ll be fine. Maddie actually needs me."

He turned and walked out. He closed the door softly behind him.

I stood alone in the bathroom. The silence was deafening. I grabbed my purse and my car keys. I walked out to the garage and drove to the clinic alone.

The exam room smelled like sterile wipes and lavender air freshener. The paper crinkled under me as I lay back on the table. The ultrasound tech smiled kindly at me. But her eyes held a trace of pity. She noticed the empty chair beside the bed.

She squeezed the warm gel onto my skin. She moved the plastic wand around. Then, a fast, rhythmic sound filled the small room.

Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh.

It sounded like a tiny galloping horse. It was my baby’s heartbeat. Strong. Fast. Alive.

Tears pricked my eyes. A fierce, overwhelming wave of love washed over me. I placed my hand gently over my stomach. I will protect you, I promised silently. No matter what.

The tech printed a small, grainy photo. I tucked it safely into my wallet.

I drove home through the gray Seattle drizzle. My mind was heavy. I expected to walk into a house of crisis. I expected to hear crying. I quietly unlocked the front door. The lock clicked softly. I pushed the heavy wood open.

Laughter echoed from the living room.

It wasn't a tearful sniffle. It was loud, bright, and cheerful. I walked silently down the hall. I stopped at the edge of the archway.

Cristian and Madalyn were sitting on the floor. A colorful board game was spread out between them. Madalyn was grinning from ear to ear. She rolled the dice and cheered loudly.

"I win again, Daddy!" she squealed.

Cristian threw his head back and laughed. "You're too good at this, Maddie. You beat me three times in a row."

There were no tissues. No red eyes. No signs of a panic attack. Just a father and his daughter, enjoying a perfectly happy morning.

The realization hit me like cold water. There was no panic attack. It was just a game. A game to keep him away from me. And he played right along.

I stood in the shadows. My hand rested over my purse, right where the ultrasound photo was hidden. Cristian looked up and saw me. His smile faltered for a second. He reached up and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Hey," he said casually. "How did it go?"

He didn't get up. He didn't step toward me. He didn't ask about the heartbeat.

Madalyn looked over her shoulder. She locked eyes with me. She smiled, holding up a plastic game piece like a trophy.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. The burning anger from the weekend was gone. It was replaced by something else. Something cold, sharp, and incredibly clear.

"It went fine," I said evenly.

I turned and walked upstairs. The tug-of-war was over. He had already let go of the rope.
