Chapter 4

As soon as I finished speaking, the people around me started gossiping.

"Do you think she's actually dumb or just pretending? The client already wired the deposit to the company and she's still trying to argue."

"Exactly! Honestly, I think she's just jealous of Miss Jacobs's abilities and that's why she's trying to badmouth her behind her back."

"This scheming woman is disgusting! She relies on men and still dares to question our company's top contributor."

After hearing the employees' chatter, I suddenly understood what had happened.

I'd casually mentioned the project during a phone call to someone in Brynton, not expecting them to transfer the payment without even signing a contract.

It looked like my reputation really did carry some weight.

Still, the client's unexpected move put me in a position where I couldn't explain myself clearly.

Seeing that I didn't respond, Miles assumed I was backing down. His expression grew more disgusted.

"Alright, the company isn't a place for your bragging. Now get lost!"

After that, he waved his hand dismissively.

My patience ran out after being humiliated in public for so long.

Just as Miles turned to walk into his office, I pulled out my phone.

"Miles, hold on a second, don't be so quick to kick me out."

"You don't believe me, right? Wait until I finish this call and everything will be clear."

With that, I held up my phone in front of everyone.

The phone rang only a few times before the other end picked up.

"Hello, is this Ben? It's Charlotte."

The person on the other end sounded incredibly excited upon hearing my voice.

"Charlotte? Is that really you? Weren't you off falling in love or something? What brings you to call me now?"

I cast a meaningful glance at Miles and let out a deep sigh.

"Don't even mention it. I got played."

As soon as I said that, Benedict burst out laughing. His hearty laugh echoed through the whole office.

I gave a slightly awkward cough.

"Let's put the love drama aside. I need you to clear something up for me. It's important."

My expression suddenly turned serious as I continued.

"I'm putting the phone on speaker now. I'll ask a question and you answer. Got it?"

I began to ask only after hearing an "Uh-huh" from the other side.

"That deal with Sawyer Enterprise, was it because of my phone call that you signed it?"

The moment I finished speaking, the reply came immediately.

"Yeah, I remember that. I even found it odd at the time since you've never done that kind of favor for anyone before."

"Then you told me it was your boyfriend's company, which made sense."

Hearing that, I let out a quiet sigh of relief and moved on to the next question.

"Do you know someone named Camila Jacobs, the secretary at Sawyer Enterprise? Have you ever met her?"

He paused for a moment, then replied slowly.

"I know the name, but I've never actually met her."

Miles suddenly snatched my phone away before I could ask the last question.

Then, he angrily yelled into the phone.

"Hey, you on the other end, listen up!"

"I don't care where Charlotte found an actor like you to try and fool me."

"I am the chairman of Sawyer Enterprise. How dare you and Charlotte slander my secretary? You both better be ready to receive a lawyer's letter!"

Before Benedict could say anything else, Miles hung up.

Seeing this scene unfold, I was utterly stunned.

Based on my understanding of Benedict Barnes, Sawyer Enterprise was in serious trouble.

This ignorant man had just single-handedly ruined his own company.

Just as Miles hung up the phone, Camila returned.
