Chapter 2

The scent of browned butter and cured bacon drifted into the master bedroom, pulling me out of a restless, fractured sleep.

I sat up, the Egyptian cotton sheets pooling around my waist. For a few seconds, my mind clung to the remnants of a dream, but the cold reality from the night before crashed down on me almost instantly. The wire transfer. The ledger. The signature.

I forced myself out of bed and walked toward the kitchen.

Adrian stood by the marble island, dressed in a charcoal button-down with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating the clean lines of his jaw and the relaxed curve of his mouth. He set down his coffee mug the second he heard my bare feet on the hardwood.

"Good morning, beautiful," he said.

He stepped forward, pulled me into his arms, and dipped his head to kiss the tip of my nose. His chest was warm and solid, smelling like cedarwood and clean linen.

My body went completely rigid against him. For three months, this exact embrace had felt like the safest shelter in the entire city. Now, it felt like an iron cage closing around my ribs.

I managed to pull back slightly, keeping my hands resting against his forearms so he wouldn't sense the distance. "You didn't have to cook."

"I wanted to," he said, smoothing a strand of hair behind my ear. "You barely ate anything at the gala last night, and you were pale when you left my office. Sit down. The eggs are almost ready."

I took a stool at the counter, watching his hands as he plated the food. He looked so effortlessly domestic. It made my stomach twist into knots.

"Adrian," I said, keeping my tone light, almost casual.

He glanced back over his shoulder with a faint smile. "Yeah?"

"I was thinking about a profile pitch this morning for the magazine," I said, resting my chin on my hand. "Hypothetically... if a man went after a woman purely for revenge, but she ended up genuinely falling in love with him along the way, do you think he'd feel guilty?"

Adrian paused. His spatula hovered half an inch above the skillet for an entire beat before he set it down.

When he turned to face me, the warm smile was back on his face, smooth and completely unbothered. "Is that your way of telling me you're running out of ideas for your culture column?"

My chest tightened. I forced a small laugh, nodding. "Maybe. Work is just on my mind."

"A man who operates purely on leverage usually knows what he wants from the start," Adrian said quietly, leaning his hips against the counter. "Guilt is expensive. Most people in business can't afford it."

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed sharply against the marble between us. The screen lit up with a notification banner.

*Vanessa: She still doesn't suspect anything, right?*

The blood drained from my face. My fingertips went numb against the cold surface of the stool.

Vanessa. My half-sister. We had never been close—she had spent our entire childhood treating every compliment I received like an insult to her own existence—but I never imagined she would conspire with someone to tear me apart.

Adrian’s office phone rang from the adjoining study, cutting through the heavy silence. He glanced toward the doorway, then slid his personal phone into his slacks without looking at the screen.

"Take your time with breakfast," he murmured, leaning down to press another soft kiss to my temple. "I have to take this Tokyo call."

"Of course," I said, my voice hollow.

The moment his study door clicked shut, I grabbed my purse. I didn't touch the food. I left the penthouse before he even finished his call, texting him an excuse about an urgent morning interview at the newspaper office.

Thirty minutes later, I was sitting across from Chloe at a cramped booth in a diner on 14th Street.

Chloe was my oldest friend and the sharpest investigative researcher I knew. When she pulled out her laptop and opened the corporate registry files, her expression darkened.

"It took twenty minutes to cross-reference," Chloe said, turning the screen toward me. "Look at the transaction history for your sister's boutique PR firm."

I leaned in, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Three months ago, a shell corporation linked directly to Blackwood Capital had deposited a two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar advisory fee into Vanessa's business account.

The date was stamped in bold: forty-eight hours before the art foundation gala.

"She texted you that afternoon, didn't she?" Chloe asked gently. "Telling you she had a plus-one ticket she couldn't waste?"

"She came to my apartment," I whispered, the memory hitting me like a physical blow. "She brought me a white silk dress. She told me it was my color. She spent an hour helping me do my hair."

Every single moment had been staged. Vanessa had hand-delivered me to him.

"What are you going to do, Evie?" Chloe asked, covering my shaking hand with hers. "You can't go back to his place."

My phone vibrated in my bag. An invitation popped up on the calendar—a private dinner at an exclusive social club near Central Park, hosted by an investment group affiliated with Adrian.

Beneath the RSVP list, Vanessa’s name was checked as attending.

"I need to hear it from them," I said, swallowing the bile rising in my throat. "I need to know everything."

***

By eight that evening, I stood in the grand entrance of the private club.

I wore an off-the-shoulder black gown, simple and sharp, with no jewelry except the diamond pendant Adrian had given me a month ago. The room was bathed in soft amber light, filled with private wealth and the low murmur of string quartets.

The moment I stepped inside, Adrian materialized beside me. His hand found the small of my back, his touch firm and possessive.

"You look stunning," he murmured, his dark eyes sweeping over me before he bent down and kissed me right at the corner of my lips, in full view of three board members.

Several guests smiled in our direction, offering quiet remarks about how well-matched we were. Adrian smiled back, playing the proud, devoted partner to perfection.

Across the room, Vanessa caught my eye. She wore a shimmering silver dress, her champagne glass poised between manicured fingers. She walked over, her smile bright and radiant.

"Evelyn, honey! You look gorgeous," she said, leaning in for an air-kiss. Her gaze flicked to the diamond at my throat, a sharp glint of resentment flashing in her eyes before she smoothed it over. "That necklace is incredible. Adrian really spoils you, doesn't he?"

"He's very generous," I replied, forcing my voice to remain even.

A waiter approached Adrian with a message from an associate, pulling his attention away. Vanessa excused herself toward the private hallway, and I saw my chance.

"I'll be right back, sweetheart," I told Adrian, slipping away before he could offer to walk with me. "Just heading to the powder room."

I followed Vanessa's silver dress down the dimly lit corridor, away from the chatter of the ballroom. She stepped into a private lounge near the end of the hall.

Before I could reach the door, another figure moved past the archway. Adrian.

I shrank back into the alcove beneath a large oil painting, pressing my back against the wall. The heavy wooden door of the lounge remained cracked open by an inch.

Vanessa's voice carried clearly through the gap, sharp and irritated. "How much longer are you going to keep pretending? She's already in love with you."

My breath locked in my throat.

"That's exactly what I wanted," Adrian replied. His voice was completely devoid of the warmth he had used on me all morning. It was cold, detached, and ruthless.

"Don't forget the terms of our agreement," Vanessa snapped. "Once Evelyn signs the paperwork, this game is over. My firm needs the rest of the retainer cleared before the end of the quarter."

There was a heavy pause.

"I'm handling it," Adrian said flatly.

Vanessa let out a mocking laugh. "Really? Because from where I'm standing, you look like a man who's forgetting his script. Don't tell me you've actually fallen for her."

Adrian said nothing.

The silence dragged out, thick and suffocating.

I raised my phone with trembling hands, tapped the voice recorder, and held the microphone toward the door frame. Tears spilled down my cheeks, burning against my skin, but I didn't make a sound.

"Once Evelyn signs over her mother's trust," Vanessa continued, her tone dripping with venom, "she'll have nothing left. The house in upstate, the portfolio, all of it goes under your management. Just like we planned."

My mother's trust.

The realization hit me with the force of an oncoming freight train. It was never just about Julian's accident. He didn't just want to break my heart to avenge his brother. He wanted to strip away every last piece of security my mother had left behind for me.

"Watch your mouth, Vanessa," Adrian’s voice cut in suddenly, dropping to a dangerous, low gravel. "Don't talk about Evelyn like she's some disposable pawn."

Vanessa scoffed, startled by the shift in his tone. "Oh, please. Have you forgotten why you approached her in the first place?"

Inside the room, the silence returned, heavier this time.

When Adrian finally spoke, his voice was barely a murmur, but it carried straight through the wood.

"I haven't forgotten."

Those three words extinguished the final, fragile ember of hope buried in my chest.

I stopped the recording, tucked the phone into my clutch, and backed away into the shadows of the corridor before the door could open.

When I returned to the main ballroom, I took a glass of sparkling water from a tray, drinking it in one long swallow to steady my trembling hands. Adrian appeared beside me less than two minutes later.

His eyes swept over my face, instantly catching the tension around my mouth.

"Evelyn?" He reached out, his fingers lifting toward my forehead. "What's wrong? You're shaking."

I flinched, pulling my head back before his skin could touch mine.

His hand froze in midair. His dark eyes darkened instantly, the warmth slipping into something intense and guarded.

"Did someone say something to you?" he asked, his voice dropping into that quiet, lethal tone he used for corporate rivals. "Tell me who it was."

I looked directly into his eyes, looking at the man I had fallen for so completely over the past three months.

*If I told you the truth,* I thought, *I’d tell you that the monster tearing me apart is the one standing right in front of me.*

"No one," I said, forcing the corners of my mouth to lift into a strained, convincing smile. "Just a migraine coming on. The music is a little loud."

He studied me for several seconds, clearly unsatisfied, but he lowered his hand and let his fingers wrap around mine instead.

When the gala finally wound down an hour later, the cool night air of Fifth Avenue hit my bare shoulders like ice. Adrian held my hand as we descended the wide stone steps toward his waiting black sedan.

Halfway down the staircase, he stopped.

He turned to face me, taking both of my hands into his. The streetlights cast soft shadows across the sharp planes of his face, making him look breathtakingly sincere.

"Evelyn," he said softly, his thumb tracing the knuckles of my right hand. "There's something important I need to share with you before your birthday next week."

My heart gave a violent lurch against my ribs.

For half a second, the naive part of me wondered if he was finally going to break. If he was going to tell me about Julian, about the accident, about the web of lies he had built around us.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the traffic.

He smiled, his dark eyes filled with that familiar, devastating affection that had completely dismantled my defenses from day one.

"I'm planning something special for us," he murmured, his voice rich with promise. "Something you'll never forget."

I looked at him through the darkness, a cold wave of despair washing over every nerve in my body.

He looked like a man in love. But I knew what was coming. The special surprise wasn't a future—it was the day he planned to take everything I had left.
