He Let His Mistress Raise My Son Novel Cover

He Let His Mistress Raise My Son

I gave up my career so Jace could chase his dream, raising our son alone while he became the face of the league. Then Olivia came back—his high school first love, now a child psychologist. She helped Noah sleep. Jace gave her the garage code, our son's preschool account, my seat at parent events. When Noah was hospitalized, I walked in to find her beside his bed, and the doctor called her "Mom." Jace stopped me before I could answer. She isn't his mother. Maybe, he said, that's not the part that matters anymore. A young adult romance novel of sacrifice, betrayal, and a mother fighting for her place.

Chapter 2

The coffee was still brewing when I put my phone on the counter between us, screen up.

"Take her off."

Jace looked at the coffee pot instead of the notification.

"Good morning to you too."

"Emergency contact. Authorized pickup. Take Olivia off both."

He pulled a mug from the cabinet. "We covered this."

"No. You announced it after you did it. That's not the same thing."

He poured his coffee. "Season starts in nine days. I'm at the facility from six in the morning until whenever film review ends. My phone sits in a locker during practice. If Sunrise calls and you're unavailable, who gets Noah?"

"Your mother. Our sitter. Reina from down the street if it's a true emergency. I gave you names last month."

"My mother lives forty minutes away. The sitter is in school until three. Reina has a job."

"None of them are your ex-girlfriend."

He set the mug down slowly.

"There it is."

"There what is?"

"The actual problem." He leaned a hip against the counter. "If you could separate your feelings about Olivia from what Noah needs, this would be easier."

"You entered your ex into our son's records without asking me. My feelings are allowed in that sentence."

"She's a licensed professional."

"Then hire her as a professional. Professionals don't need my garage code and unlimited pickup authority."

He dragged a hand over his mouth.

"You're making this a competition."

"You put us on the same form."

He picked up his coffee.

He did not remove her.

Sunrise Learning Center had turned its main room into a soft obstacle course for Family Movement Day. Foam wedges. Tunnels. A low balance beam painted blue like a river.

I'd spent Sunday making activity cards for the event, laminating them at the FedEx Office on West End and punching holes so teachers could clip them to lanyards.

At the sign-in table, Ms. Deb gave me an apologetic look.

"Maya, we had an RSVP change this morning."

She slid me a handwritten visitor sticker.

"What change?"

"Jace emailed that he had a team meeting and Ms. Marsh would use Noah's participating-adult slot. The event system only prints one activity badge per child. Your legal parent access hasn't changed. I can add you as an observer, obviously."

I looked across the room.

Olivia was already on the mat wearing a heather-gray shirt with an orange stripe on the sleeve, nearly identical to Noah's. Her laminated badge read FAMILY CAREGIVER.

Mine read MAYA - VISITOR in blue marker.

Noah saw Olivia first. He ran toward her with both arms raised, and she caught him against her hip.

Three nights of bedtimes. A house code. A portal login. Apparently that was enough to create muscle memory in a three-year-old.

I did not blame him.

Children went where warm hands were offered.

I set my stack of activity cards beside Deb's clipboard.

"These are the matching games I promised. Color, animal sound, then balance. Use them if they're still useful."

"Maya, you can absolutely participate too. We can rotate—"

"It's fine. Don't make Noah the center of an adult correction."

I stood at the edge of the mat for forty minutes and watched Olivia guide my son through the tunnel. When he came out, he looked back at her for the clap.

I made myself smile because sixteen parents were in the room and at least two phones were recording.

Jace arrived with twelve minutes left.

He went to Noah first. Then Olivia. He touched her shoulder and thanked her for covering.

The father beside me leaned over with an easy grin.

"Your husband and his wife are great with him. Very photogenic family."

"She's not—"

Jace had heard.

"She's our consultant," he said with a quick laugh. "Just helping us with routines."

He corrected Olivia's title.

He did not introduce me as his wife or Noah's mother.

The dad nodded and moved away.

I waited until he was out of earshot.

"You reassigned the family-event slot without telling me."

"Not here."

"You let me walk in and find out from the front desk."

Jace kept a pleasant expression for the room while his voice dropped.

"Can you, one time, not turn something for Noah into a contest between you and Olivia?"

I stopped speaking.

There was nothing useful to say to a man who had created a competition and then blamed me for noticing the scoreboard.

At home, I pulled an old Titans training-camp duffel from the top shelf of the hall closet. Black canvas. Broken zipper pull replaced with a shoelace in 2019. Jace had lived out of it when he was bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster, back when every contract came with a chance of being cut by Tuesday.

Inside the lining, the old luggage tag was still tied to a loop.

His handwriting had faded to blue-gray.

When I get my footing, it's your turn. - J

I stared at it for ten seconds.

Then I untied it and dropped it into the junk drawer under the spare batteries.

At the kitchen table, I opened the resume I had not touched since Noah was born.

Family wellness coordinator. Youth movement instructor. Pediatric fitness assistant.

My certification had expired two months ago. Renewal was possible online. There were more openings in Nashville than I'd expected.

I updated six years of invisible work into language employers would recognize: meal planning, family programming, child development coursework, movement instruction, volunteer event coordination.

Then I applied to Little Movers Family Wellness Center before I could talk myself out of it.

The confirmation email landed almost immediately.

A second message loaded beneath it.

Sunrise Learning Center - Pickup Authorization Updated.

Guardian Jace Bennett has confirmed Olivia Marsh as an unrestricted authorized pickup for Noah Bennett.

I read the sentence twice.

Behind it, my resume was still open.

Maya Bennett sat at the top in bold letters.

For the first time all day, my own name looked like something I could still use.
