Chapter 6

For a second, I didn’t want to answer. I almost didn’t. Then I did.

“…Hello?”

A pause. Then a voice—older, measured, steady.

“Miss Savannah Smith?”

My breath caught.

“I’ve been looking for you. This is Dominic Leone—your father’s personal secretary.”

“…My father?” I whispered. “My father’s dead.”

A pause. Then calmly: “No. Your stepfather, the man who raised you, passed years ago. Your biological father… is alive. Very much so.”

I stood up. Gripping the edge of the counter like it would save me from drowning.

“Who the hell are you?”

“Dominic Leone. Your father’s been searching for you for nearly thirty years. We didn’t know where your mother went after she left. She never used your real last name.”

My hands were trembling.

He kept talking. “He’s been in the hospital these past few weeks. Age is catching up to him. But he’s stable. And… he wants to see you. Badly.”

I sank into the kitchen stool.

“My father… is alive?”

“Yes. Wealthy. Respected. Still very powerful, even now. He’s waiting for you. And we’re sending a car to your address.”

I felt the weight of everything crash down. The ruined dress. The stolen life. The baby I was hiding in my womb. The cancer eating me alive.

And now this.

Truths I never asked for. A family I never knew.

Maybe, just maybe, the past wasn’t done with me yet.

---

The hospital room was quiet. Dim. Machines beeped steady like a lullaby made of metal and breath. My father lay in the bed, but still carrying the gravity of a man who once ran empires with a whisper.

He told me everything.

About my mother—how she left his world to protect me. How she changed my name. Hid me like stolen treasure. About how he searched, how his men followed false leads for decades. And finally… how he found me.

“You have Moretti blood,” he said.

“That matters in our world. It means you don’t kneel unless you choose to. You don’t belong in the shadows, Savannah. They made you small. They made you quiet. But it’s time. Come home. It’s time they see who you really are.”

I didn’t cry. I didn’t break.

I just sat beside him. Eyes wide open the entire night, listening, speaking only when my voice stopped shaking. For the first time, I didn’t feel invisible. For the first time… someone saw me. Not as a problem. Not as a duty. But as something powerful.

---

The next morning...

I got home a little after ten.

My body ached. My soul felt like it’d been turned inside out. But something in me had shifted. Maybe not strength. Not yet. But clarity.

The door creaked open. And Zeus was already waiting.

He was sitting on the edge of the couch, fists balled at his sides, eyes bloodshot like he hadn’t slept. His jaw clenched. His breathing ragged. Something ugly swimming in his face. Before I could speak— He slapped me.

Hard. My head snapped sideways. My lip split against my tooth. I tasted iron and betrayal in the same second.

“After poisoning Zoraya’s water and switching her vitamins to abortion pills you still have the guts to come back here?”

I staggered back, blinking, heart thudding so loud I couldn’t hear straight.

“She collapsed after the party. Vomiting. Convulsing. She’s in the fucking hospital, Savannah.”

He stepped closer, towering, fists trembling.

“You wanted her dead, didn’t you?!”

The accusation ripped through me. I just stood there, bleeding, shaking, staring into the eyes of the man who once said he loved me more than loyalty itself.

“You’re going there,” he snarled, “and you’ll get on your fucking knees and beg.”

I touched my lip. Blood smeared my fingertips. My voice was cracked when I finally spoke.

“You really believe I’d do that to your fucking mistress?”

“You dragged her into my house, Zeus. My bed. My life. Did I say a word? Did I scream? You didn’t see me cry. You didn’t care. And now I’m the villain?”

He didn’t answer. Didn’t blink. He just grabbed my wrist. Rough. Possessive. Like I was an object.

He dragged me out the door. Down the steps. Into the car.

The moment the door shut, I breathed in deep, looked straight ahead, and whispered what I should’ve said long ago.

“LET'S BREAK UP! I’m... I'm done, Zeus. Done with all of this.”

He turned his head slowly. His voice was flat. Distant. “Not until you kneel in front of Zoraya.”

“Not until she forgives you.” A pause. “Then you can crawl out of my life.”

---

Zoraya was alone in the room. Pale. Hooked up to IVs. Eyes glassy with fake innocence. She looked up when we walked in like she hadn’t been expecting this performance all day.

Zeus gave me a look colder than winter in hell.

“Do it. Kneel. Tell her you’re sorry for trying to kill my child.”

I flinched. The words hit harder than his hand ever could. I shook my head slowly, lips trembling, not because I wanted to fight—but because I couldn’t believe this was real.

“I didn’t…” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Zeus please, I didn’t do anything.”

His hand cracked across my cheek before I finished the sentence. Pain bloomed. Stars danced in my vision. My knees buckled and I hit the floor.

Tiled. Sterile. Cold.

And I whispered, because that’s all I had left in me, “I’m sorry… I... I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Zoraya gave this long, dramatic sigh like she was doing the world a favor.

She nodded, like some noble queen forgiving a peasant. “I forgive you,” she said softly. “I know this must be so hard for you.”

Zeus turned away, his phone ringing. “Don’t move, not until I say so,” he muttered before stepping outside.

The moment the door clicked shut, the air changed. Zoraya sat up slightly, the IV tape pulling on her arm. Her lips curled into a smirk so sharp it could’ve slit my throat.

“See, Savannah?” she whispered. “He hit you for me. Seven years with him meant nothing. I’ve had him for seven months, and he’s already mine.”
