Chapter 4

Back in my suite, I pulled up the estate’s surveillance feed on my phone and started reviewing the earlier footage.

I watched the screen in silence, each passing second carving the truth deeper into me. Nikolai Dacre—my husband, my don, the man I had built my life around—had betrayed me so completely that even breathing felt like work. What I once thought was loyalty, fate, and unshakable devotion now felt like a noose tightening around my throat.

Via’s taunting voice still rang in my head.

“She didn’t stir anything in you tonight, did she?”

And Nikolai’s reply—half excuse, half cowardice—hurt far worse than I had prepared for.

The betrayal didn’t stay in my heart. It spread through my whole body, heavy and violent, until my chest ached with it. Rage pressed against my ribs, demanding release, urging me to storm downstairs and tear apart every lie they had built between them.

But I forced myself to stay still.

“Not yet,” I said under my breath, my voice unsteady at first, then firmer. “I need everything.”

I wasn’t going to confront him with suspicion. I wanted evidence. Not only for myself, but for everyone who still bowed their heads when Don Nikolai Dacre entered a room. They deserved to know exactly who they were pledging loyalty to.

So I kept watching.

Every stolen touch.

Every private exchange.

Every glance that lingered too long.

Every kiss.

Each second on that screen poisoned something else inside me. He hadn’t just betrayed our marriage. He had turned our home—our house, our name, our life—into the setting for his humiliation of me.

At some point, I couldn’t take anymore.

I locked the screen and dropped the phone onto the bed, then pressed a shaking hand against my chest as if I could physically keep myself from breaking apart.

The pain sat there like a blade.

“This ends tonight,” I whispered.

And this time, I meant it.

---

The next morning, I walked into Nikolai’s office without knocking.

The room smelled like him—leather, expensive whiskey, cedar, cold control. But beneath it was something else. A faint trace of feminine perfume lingered in the air, light and floral and utterly out of place.

Via.

Even here, she had found a way to leave her mark.

I crossed the room and set a small box in the center of his desk. Inside were the scraps of a marriage I no longer recognized for what it had once pretended to be—old notes, small keepsakes, mementos that had once felt precious and now seemed grotesque.

On the lid, I left a single handwritten message.

For the husband who was never worthy of me. Happy anniversary.

Then I took a steadying breath and opened the drawer where he had kept every letter I had written him over the years.

I stared at them for a moment.

Page after page of love, faith, longing, support. Pieces of myself I had handed over without hesitation. At the time, I thought they meant something. Now they looked like proof of how completely I had loved a man who didn’t deserve it.

One by one, I gathered them up.

My movements were calm, deliberate, almost ceremonial.

It felt less like cleaning and more like erasing a grave.

Behind me, the office door opened.

“Vivica?”

Nikolai.

I didn’t look back immediately. I kept my attention on the last envelope in my hand before finally saying, “What do you think I’m doing?”

There was a pause.

Then his footsteps sounded behind me, slow and measured. “What is all this?”

I turned then, meeting his eyes without hesitation.

“My answer,” I said.

His gaze shifted to the box on his desk, then back to me. His expression tightened. “You’re being dramatic.”

A hollow laugh rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down.

“Dramatic?” I repeated. “That’s what you call this?”

His jaw flexed. “You’re angry. Fine. But don’t turn one mistake into something bigger than it is.”

I stared at him.

One mistake.

Not betrayal. Not deception. Not public humiliation. Just a mistake.

“I gave you everything I had,” I said, my voice low and cutting. “My trust. My loyalty. My name. I stood beside you through every war, every deal, every mess you created. And this is what you did with it.”

He exhaled sharply, frustration flashing across his face. “You don’t know the full story.”

“No,” I said, stepping closer, “I know enough.”

The room went still.

I could feel the anger rising in me again, but this time it no longer felt wild. It felt clean. Cold. Controlled.

“You are not the man I believed I married,” I told him. “And I’m done giving pieces of myself to someone who treats betrayal like an inconvenience.”

His expression changed then. For the first time, something close to alarm entered his eyes.

He reached toward me. “Vivica—”

I stepped back before he could touch me.

“No.”

The single word landed hard between us.

“Don’t stand there and ask me to think about the family, the business, or appearances,” I said. “You should have thought about all of that before you dragged another woman into our home.”

His mouth tightened. “This isn’t only about you.”

I smiled then, but there was nothing soft in it.

“That’s exactly where you’re wrong. For the first time in a very long time, this is about me.”

He went silent.

I took one last look at him—at the man who had once been my safe place, my partner, my future—and felt whatever remained between us go cold.

“I’m taking back my life,” I said quietly. “You don’t get to keep it just because you got used to owning it.”

Then I turned and walked toward the door.

My steps didn’t shake.

I didn’t look back.

Whatever we had been, whatever I had once believed we were, it ended the moment he chose to dishonor me and call it nothing.

This was not my ruin.

It was my exit.

And my beginning.
