Chapter 5

Claudia Sims POV

I didn't go home that night. Home was the Upper East Side apartment where Ashton's monogrammed towels hung in the bathroom and his favorite whiskey sat on the bar cart and his presence lingered in every room like smoke after a fire. I couldn't go back there. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

Instead, I checked into a modest hotel in the East Village, a neighborhood I had loved in my twenties, before the money and the mergers and the man who had made me forget who I was. The hotel was called The Marlowe, a narrow brick building wedged between a vintage record store and a Polish bakery that sent the smell of fresh rye bread drifting up to the windows. I paid with a credit card linked to an account Ashton knew nothing about—one of dozens I had maintained over the years, a quiet insurance policy against the day I might need to disappear.

The room was small but clean. A bed with a faded floral quilt. A window that looked out onto a fire escape and, beyond it, the warm glow of the bakery's neon sign. A desk with a lamp that flickered if you jiggled the cord. I sat on the edge of the bed, still wearing the simple black dress, and I pulled out the encrypted phone Archer had given me five years ago.

It was cold and heavy in my hands, a slab of black glass and military-grade technology. There was only one contact saved in its memory. A single letter: A.

I stared at it for a long time. My thumb hovered over the call button, trembling. I thought about Archer's voice, low and rough, the way it had sounded when he told me to go live in the world I had built. I thought about the way he had turned his back to me, his silhouette sharp against the falling dusk, and said he would keep the seat warm.

I didn't call him. Not yet. This was my mess. I needed to see it clearly before I brought in the cavalry. I needed to understand exactly how deep the rot went.

I set the phone on the nightstand, lay down on the faded floral quilt, and stared at the ceiling until the first grey light of dawn began to seep through the window.

The next morning, I woke to a nightmare.

My regular phone—the one Ashton knew about, the one I used for the life I had been pretending to live—was exploding with notifications. Texts from acquaintances I barely remembered giving my number to. Tags on social media platforms I had only joined because Ashton insisted they were "essential for personal branding." Google Alerts for my own name, which I had set up years ago as a professional precaution and then forgotten about.

I opened the first link with trembling fingers.

Page Six: Mystery Woman Disrupts Bowers Foundation Gala—Was She a Jilted Lover or a Hired Troublemaker?

The article was a masterpiece of innuendo, each sentence carefully crafted to suggest without accusing, to imply without stating. It described an "unidentified woman" who had "stormed" the press event and "verbally attacked" the foundation's creative director, Bianca Burks. Sources close to the foundation—which meant Ashton, or someone on his payroll—suggested the woman was a "disgruntled former contractor" who had been "let go due to performance issues." The article hinted at "personal entanglements" with Mr. Bowers, painting me as a scorned woman seeking revenge, a cliché so old it was practically engraved on cave walls.

More articles followed, each one more vicious than the last, spreading across the internet like a virus.

They had my name. They had my photo—a grainy shot from the gala, my face half in shadow, my expression severe and angry, frozen in a moment that had been ripped from context and repurposed as evidence of my instability. Ashton's PR machine was working overtime, spinning the narrative before I could even open my mouth. He was using the media empire I had funded to destroy my credibility, painting me as unstable, unhinged, a woman who had fabricated a relationship and a career out of desperate ambition.

I read every article. I read the comments, too—a mistake, but one I couldn't stop myself from making. Strangers called me a gold digger, a psycho, a woman who couldn't take a hint. They speculated about my mental health, my motives, my sex life. They turned me into a character in a story that had nothing to do with who I really was.

And through all of it, I felt something shifting inside me. Not breaking. Hardening. The woman I had pretended to be for five years—Claudia the supportive fiancée, Claudia the quiet consultant, Claudia who made herself small so that a man could feel big—was being dismantled in the court of public opinion. And beneath that crumbling facade, something else was stirring. Something that had been buried for too long, sleeping under layers of compromise and self-denial.

My phone rang. It was Ava, my closest friend in the city, the only person who knew the truth about my relationship with Ashton—or at least, the truth as I had understood it. She owned a small bakery in Brooklyn, a warm, flour-dusted haven where I had spent many afternoons hiding from the life I had chosen.

"Claudia, what is happening?" Her voice was tight with panic, the words tumbling out in a rush. "My phone is blowing up. Reporters are calling the bakery, asking if I know you, if you've ever been institutionalized, if you have a history of stalking powerful men. They're saying Ashton's lawyers are threatening to sue anyone who spreads 'defamatory' information about him. My regular customers are getting calls, Claudia. My regular customers."

I closed my eyes. The weight of what he was doing settled over me like a shroud. "He's trying to silence me. He's trying to make me toxic so that if I speak out, no one will believe me. And he's trying to isolate me from anyone who might stand by me."

"This is insane. You need to fight back. Tell them the truth. Tell them about the Artemis Collection, about the money, about everything."

"The truth doesn't matter right now, Ava. He controls the narrative. He owns the platforms. If I go public with my side of the story, he'll twist it into more evidence that I'm unstable. He'll say I'm lying, that I'm obsessed, that I've fabricated everything. And right now, people will believe him. Because he's Ashton Bowers, and I'm just the woman he's told them I am."

Ava was silent for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice was softer, sadder. "What are you going to do?"

I looked at the encrypted phone on the nightstand. It sat there, dark and silent, a door I hadn't yet opened.

"I'm going to remind him who I really am."

I hung up and picked up the phone. My thumb found the single contact, pressed down, and held.

It rang twice.
