Chapter 2

Adela gripped the cold edge of the sink, her knuckles white. The pregnancy test on the floor was a silent mockery, a declaration that her life was no longer her own.

Caden's words echoed in her mind. I will personally drag you to a clinic...

A chill started in her feet and spread through her entire body.

No. She couldn't let him know. This child was innocent. It was the only thing in this cold, gilded cage that was truly hers.

She picked up the test, wrapped it tightly in tissue, and buried it deep in the trash. She turned on the faucet, splashing cold water on her face again and again, trying to wash away the panic.

Looking at her pale reflection, Adela's hand rested on her lower abdomen again. A faint, unfamiliar sense of connection gave her a strange flicker of courage in the midst of her chaos.

She dressed in her scrubs and drove to New York-Presbyterian Hospital. As a doctor, she knew exactly what she was facing.

In the hallway, she ran into Dr. Donte Daniels, a senior resident from her department. His face broke into a warm, sunny smile when he saw her.

"Adela, you look a little pale. Rough night?" he asked, his kind brown eyes filled with genuine concern. Donte had been her friend since medical school, a constant source of quiet support.

Adela forced a smile. "I'm fine. Probably just low blood sugar." She couldn't let anyone see.

He pulled a small chocolate bar from the pocket of his white coat. "Here, for energy. If you need anything, just call me." His simple kindness was a warm current against her frayed nerves.

The morning rounds were a blur of charts and patients. Adela forced herself to focus, to push the secret in her womb to the back of her mind.

At lunch in the cafeteria, a sudden wave of nausea rolled through her. She clapped a hand over her mouth and bolted for the restroom.

She was violently sick in one of the stalls, her body convulsing.

When she came out, shaky and weak, Donte was waiting near the door, his expression worried. "Adela, are you sure you're okay? Those symptoms look a lot like morning sickness."

Her heart skipped a beat. She steadied herself against the wall. "It's probably just my gastroenteritis acting up. I'll prescribe myself something this afternoon." She used her professional knowledge as a shield.

Donte looked skeptical, but he respected her privacy enough not to push. "Alright. But please take care of yourself."

Adela let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. Her back was slick with cold sweat. Hiding this in a hospital full of experts was going to be harder than she thought.

That afternoon, the nausea grew worse. She couldn't risk leaving a prescription record at the hospital pharmacy. She decided to consult the old family journals her grandmother, a brilliant homeopath, had left her. Those notes were her most prized possession, the foundation of her belief in alternative medicine.

Just as she was heading to the hospital's library, her phone buzzed. The name on the screen made her stomach clench for a different reason.

Caden.

She stepped into an empty stairwell before answering. "Hello?"

"Where are you?" His voice was cold and impatient.

"At the hospital."

"You have fifteen minutes. Be at the front entrance. It's my grandfather's birthday dinner. You will be there." It was not a request. It was a command.

Adela's brow furrowed. "I'm still on my shift..."

"Your job is to play the part of Mrs. Moran. Don't make me repeat myself." The warning in his tone was unmistakable.

The line went dead.

Adela stood clutching her phone, a wave of helplessness washing over her. Just as she had resolved to protect her secret, she was being summoned back to the man who would destroy it, to attend a party that was sure to be another trial by fire.

She changed out of her scrubs and gave Donte a hurried goodbye. He watched her go, the worry in his eyes deepening.

Outside the hospital's main entrance, the black Maybach was waiting, its license plate a number she knew by heart.

The driver, Al Reynolds, opened the door for her. She slid into the leather seat, feeling as though she were walking to her own execution.
