He Faked an Emergency for My Cousin,So I Flew to Africa

On Valentine's Day, Byron Gilbert claimed he wanted to spend the holiday with me, yet he insisted on bringing my cousin, Stella. After I spent hours buying her favorite treats, Byron texted that a hospital emergency required his return. But when I rushed to the clinic, I discovered the devastating truth: he had lied about the surgery to take Stella to a concert. Heartbroken, I immediately signed up for an expedited medical aid mission overseas.

Chapter 3

3: 3

3

Byron came back from the police station in a foul mood.

The officers looked into it and said that since the account was a joint one, and we had been dating and living together, it was hard to classify as theft. In the end they settled it as a civil property dispute.

But he had lost all face across the hospital.

He went from "romantic Dr. Gilbert" to "the Dr. Gilbert who stole his fiancée's money to keep her cousin."

The break room, the cafeteria, the elevator. Everywhere he went, people leaned in and whispered.

He hated me so much his teeth ached.

But if there was one thing Byron was never good at, it was a fair fight.

What he was good at was dirty tricks.

At Wednesday's department meeting, he spoke up on his own.

"Dr. Henson is leaving for the overseas aid mission soon, and her patients need to be handed off. As it happens, there's the patient in Bed 312. I suggest Dr. Henson do one last surgery before she goes."

Bed 312.

The hot potato everyone in the department knew about.

The patient herself was high-risk.

Seventy-three, with diabetes and a clotting disorder on top of it.

But the real trouble was the family.

The old woman's three sons were all businessmen, and impossibly picky and hard to deal with. Last time, because a nurse was five minutes late changing a dressing, they took the complaint straight to the state health authority.

No matter how the surgery went, the moment recovery hit even a small snag, the family would make a scene.

The department head frowned and looked at me.

I smiled a little.

"No problem. I'll take it."

Something triumphant flickered in Byron's eyes.

What he didn't know was that before I took the case, I did one thing first.

I pulled the full chart on Bed 312 and read it from start to finish.

Then I found the problem.

The clotting numbers recorded on the handoff sheet looked "just barely fit for surgery."

But when I compared everything carefully in the HIS system, I found that at handoff Byron had deliberately left out a follow-up record from an outside hospital three days earlier, and that he'd deliberately mixed up the samples when the nurse drew blood, so the latest lab results came back skewed, landing right on the passing line.

If I went into the OR on those false numbers, massive intraoperative bleeding was all but guaranteed.

And then the surgery would be mine, and if something went wrong I'd carry it alone.

While he, as the previous attending, had already cleared himself of responsibility at the handoff.

A vicious move.

But I have a habit. Before I take on a high-risk patient, I always rerun the core labs myself.

The new report came back: clotting function nowhere near adequate. Surgery postponed.

That same day I wrote a detailed handoff note and returned the patient to the original attending.

Which was Byron himself.

And on the handoff sheet, I put it in black and white:

"On review, the patient's preoperative clotting values are abnormal and show a significant discrepancy with the handoff sample data. Recommend auditing the procedure."

Byron's face went green when he got the sheet.

But there was no way for him to refuse.

Because it had come back through the proper compliance channel, and once he signed, the responsibility was his.

And the real show was still to come.

Bed 312 didn't stabilize just because the surgery was postponed.

The opposite. Because the best window had been missed, the patient went into sudden heart failure with a pulmonary embolism.

Byron panicked.

His clinical skills had never been more than average, and these past two years he'd poured all his energy into chasing women and working his connections, so his fundamentals had badly slipped.

During the resuscitation he needed two tries just to get the central line in.

The family exploded right outside the ICU.

The three sons cornered him in the office and nearly got physical.

In the end they reported him to the medical affairs office.

The first chance I had, I took that outside-hospital record,

along with the surveillance leads on his sample switch and the real lab results,

and laid it all, neatly, on the director's desk.

The director read through it and was silent for a long time.

That afternoon, the notice went out hospital-wide:

Byron Gilbert, for allegedly concealing critical medical data at handoff and mixing up samples, in serious violation of medical operating standards, is suspended effective immediately.

At the same time, the disciplinary review board will open a further investigation into the account issues arising from his private dealings with a pharmaceutical rep.

When the notice came down, I was finishing the last inventory list of aid supplies for the overseas mission.

My phone rang.

It was Byron's number.

I didn't answer.

He called seven times in a row.

On the eighth it switched to a text:

"Zoe Henson, you're ruthless. Did you have this all planned out? You did it on purpose! You've destroyed me!"

I read it, then deleted it.

I flagged his number as a harassment call and set it to block.
