Chapter 6

My phone vibrated against the sticky diner table, the harsh buzz cutting through the heavy silence. I swiped the screen. A new image loaded in the chat window.

Julian had sent a photo. He stood on a snowy balcony in Geneva, wrapping a thick wool scarf around Vivienne's neck. He smiled for the camera, playing the part of a devoted husband. Vivienne stared blankly at the lens. Her cheekbones looked sharp and hollow. Her skin held the color of wet ash.

"Is it him?" Adrian asked, his dark eyes locked on my face.

"A honeymoon update," I replied, pressing the side buttons on my device. The screen flashed, capturing the screenshot. I sent the image directly to my secure cloud folder. "He wants his amnesiac assistant to know he is enjoying his trip."

Adrian pushed his coffee mug aside. "He is establishing a timeline. He wants a digital footprint proving he cared for her right up until the end."

"Exactly," I said, sliding the phone into my pocket. "He is building an alibi in real time."

Adrian gathered the yellowed lab reports and shoved them into his leather satchel. He tossed a crumpled dollar bill onto the table. "We need to move. This diner is too public for what we are about to pull apart. I know a place where no one will look for us."

Forty minutes later, the rusted metal door of the county records annex closed behind us. Dust motes danced in the beam of a single overhead bulb. The room smelled of decaying paper and floor wax.

Adrian dropped his satchel onto a sprawling steel table. He pulled out a stack of participant follow-up logs, spreading them out under the harsh light.

"Match these against the dates Julian submitted to the ethics committee," Adrian instructed, sliding a red pen across the metal surface.

I took the pen. We worked in silence for a long time, cross-referencing the forged health reports with the actual hospital admissions. Every time a subject reported a severe neurological symptom, Julian had logged it as a mild seasonal allergy.

"Look at the dosage dates," Adrian said, pointing to a column of numbers. "He administered the inhibitor to the control group twice a week. But look at Vivienne's chart from three years ago."

I scanned the page. "She received a daily dose."

"He accelerated her toxicity on purpose," Adrian concluded. "He needed her sick enough to rely on him, but alive long enough to sign over her equity."

"He is a monster," I said.

"He is a businessman," Adrian corrected, his voice hard. "And right now, he thinks he owns all the shares."

Adrian reached into his bag, pulled out a bottle of water, and unscrewed the cap. He placed it quietly near my right hand. Then, he adjusted the neck of the desk lamp, angling the brightest light away from his own face and directly onto the documents in front of me.

He did not tell me to organize his files. He did not pat my head or speak to me like a child. He anticipated what I needed to work efficiently and provided it without demanding gratitude.

"You found another discrepancy," Adrian noted, watching my pen hover over a page.

"Subject nine," I said, my voice tighter than I intended. "Julian claimed he dropped out of the study in year two. The hospital records show he was admitted for acute respiratory failure three days after his final dosage."

Adrian leaned over the table, tracing the line of data. "He hid the fatalities under unrelated medical codes."

"I knew the data was manipulated," I said, gripping the red pen until my knuckles turned white. "I caught this kind of anomaly three years ago. That is why I refused to sign the waiver. I vetoed it. I told the board the timeline was impossible. No one listened to me."

"I listened," Adrian said quietly.

I snapped my head up.

"I was sitting in the back row during that ethics hearing," Adrian continued, holding my gaze. "You stood up in front of twelve executives and told them their flagship compound was a death sentence. You didn't back down when they threatened your tenure. You fought them."

A sharp ache flared in the back of my throat. For three years, Julian had gaslit me. He spent every day convincing me my memory of the trial data was flawed, that my defiance was just hysteria. He made me doubt my own sanity. Now, the man sitting across from me was validating the exact reality Julian tried to erase.

Hot moisture pricked the corners of my eyes. I blinked hard, refusing to let the tears fall. I pressed my lips together and forced the emotion down, locking it away behind a wall of pure spite.

"Thank you," I managed to say, keeping my tone strictly professional.

"Don't thank me," Adrian replied, tapping the paper. "Use it. Nail him to the wall."

"I plan to," I said. "I am going to strip away every asset he stole from me."

Before I could mark the next page, my phone lit up again.

This time, it was not a message. The screen flashed an incoming call. The caller ID displayed Vivienne's private number.

Adrian saw the name. He stopped moving. "Why is she calling you?"

"She thinks I am a broken shell," I whispered, picking up the device. "She probably wants to gloat about the view in Geneva."

I swiped the green icon and brought the phone to my ear. I prepared my voice, ready to deliver the vacant, obedient tone of Julian's new secretary.

"Hello, Mrs. Vance," I said, using her new married name to sell the illusion.

"Nora," Vivienne rasped.

Her voice did not carry the cruel, mocking lilt she had used in the penthouse. It sounded thin, ragged, and desperate. The sound of forced, heavy breathing echoed through the speaker.

"Are you unwell?" I asked, keeping my words flat.

"Stop," Vivienne choked out. "Stop pretending. I know he isn't in the room with you. He just left for the hotel lobby."

I froze. I met Adrian's eyes across the metal table. He gave me a sharp nod, gesturing for me to put it on speaker. I pulled the phone away from my ear and tapped the audio button.

"What do you want, Vivienne?" I demanded, dropping the act entirely. My voice turned cold and sharp.

A wet cough rattled through the speaker. "I need you to keep a secret for me."

"You locked me in a room while your husband tried to wipe my brain," I snapped. "I owe you nothing."

"You owe me this," she wheezed. The sound of fabric rustling suggested she was struggling to sit up in bed. "Because I am dying for his mistakes. And you are going to be next if you don't listen."

Adrian leaned closer to the phone. "What did he do to you?"

Vivienne did not question the male voice. She sounded too exhausted to care who else was in the room. "He told you the neuro-inhibitor was just for you, Nora. He told you he wanted to erase your memory of the trial so you would be compliant."

"I saw the bottle," I said. "I know what it was. You stood in the hallway and laughed about sending me to an asylum."

"I was following his script," Vivienne whispered, her voice dropping to a frantic hiss. "Actually, that day, Julian forced a vial down my throat too."

My stomach dropped. I stared at the metal table, the scattered files suddenly blurring together.

"Why would he dose his own accomplice?" I asked.

"Because I found out about the secondary effects," she gasped, her breathing growing shallower by the second. "I found out what the compound really does to the blood. He made me forget..."

Static crackled through the line, breaking her sentence into sharp fragments.

"Vivienne," I said sharply, gripping the edge of the table. "What did he make you forget?"

"He made me forget that the real cure is hidden in the—"

A sharp click echoed through the speaker, leaving nothing but a dead line.
