Chapter 4

By noon, the villa looked as though a luxury department store had exploded inside it.

Movers carried Chloe's monogrammed trunks up the main staircase while an interior designer trailed behind them with fabric swatches. My framed photographs had been stacked face-down beside the coat closet. A pair of Chloe's red-soled heels sat on the antique console where Tom used to leave anniversary flowers.

He had not waited for the divorce to be filed. He had barely waited for breakfast.

"Put the garment cases in the master suite," Chloe called. "And move her clothes to the guest room."

A mover glanced at me. "Ma'am, do you want us to pack these in wardrobe boxes?"

"Leave them," I said. "I will handle my own belongings."

Tom came out of the kitchen carrying coffee. "Why are you still standing around? You got the house in the settlement. You can tolerate Chloe's things for a few days while I arrange the penthouse."

"The penthouse purchased through Bennett Lifestyle Holdings?"

His hand paused halfway to his mouth.

Chloe recovered first. "That is my company. Plenty of women have investment companies."

"Most of them do not fund those companies with mislabeled corporate transfers."

Tom set the mug down. "You are making accusations based on accounting entries you do not understand."

"Then explain them."

"I do not answer to you about business."

The familiar dismissal came too quickly. He believed repetition could turn a lie into a boundary.

I picked up a stack of my blouses from the floor. "You will answer to someone."

His gaze sharpened. "Is that a threat?"

"It is how corporations work."

Chloe stepped between us. "Tommy, ignore her. She is trying to ruin our day because she cannot stand that you chose me."

She looped both arms around his neck and kissed him in the center of the living room. Tom responded with one hand at her waist, keeping his eyes open long enough to see whether I reacted.

I did not.

Nothing starves a performance faster than an empty audience.

I carried my clothes to the guest room and closed the door. Once alone, I opened the secure audit portal. The million-dollar transfer had cleared at 11:36 a.m. Tom had described it as a strategic branding retainer. Chloe's company had no employees, no website, and no history of consulting work.

The portal also showed a scheduled payment for a yacht deposit.

I forwarded both records to Mark's forensic team, then called Daniel Hart, the criminal attorney working with our auditors.

"Do we have enough for a referral?" I asked.

"Enough to request preservation orders and notify the board," Daniel said. "Not enough for an arrest, and you should not expect one overnight. Financial cases move on records, not drama."

"I am not interested in drama. I am interested in stopping him from draining the company."

"Then document everything and do not access accounts outside your authorized audit rights. We will refer the wires to the bank's fraud unit after the board acts."

The advice was sound. Revenge did not require recklessness.

At three, the interior designer entered the guest room without knocking. She carried a tablet and an apologetic expression.

"Mrs. Miller, Ms. Bennett wants this room converted into a dressing room. Mr. Miller said you would be relocating by Friday."

"Mr. Miller does not own the house."

The designer blinked. "He gave me a signed authorization."

I held out my hand. She showed me the screen. Tom had electronically approved structural changes, including the removal of two walls and the installation of a climate-controlled closet. He had also listed himself as sole owner.

I photographed the authorization.

"Do not begin any work," I said. "The deed is in my name. Your firm will be liable for trespass and property damage if anyone touches a wall."

Her face went pale. "I was told the ownership was settled."

"It is. Just not in his favor."

She gathered her samples and left within five minutes. Downstairs, Chloe's voice rose in protest as the designer explained why her crew was withdrawing.

Tom stormed into the guest room. "What did you say to her?"

"The truth."

"You agreed to cooperate."

"I agreed to a divorce. I did not agree to let your mistress demolish my house."

He closed the door behind him and lowered his voice. "Do not push me tonight. I need the banquet to go perfectly. Apex is finalizing a three-year supply extension, and the banks are watching."

The irony was almost elegant. Apex's extension depended on the Ashford guarantee he believed would remain forever.

"Then perhaps you should focus on the banquet instead of closet walls."

Tom studied me. "Why are you so calm?"

Because my name sat on fifty-one percent of his company. Because the trust's auditors were copying every server. Because the marital settlement he signed protected every asset he assumed did not exist.

I gave him none of those answers.

"I have had all night to stop loving you," I said. "Calm came afterward."

For the first time, he looked unsettled rather than angry.

A notification sounded from his phone. He checked it, turned the screen away, and left without another word.

I waited ten seconds before opening the audit portal. A new authorization request had appeared, this one for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the supplier reserve. The supporting invoice claimed Chloe's company had delivered an international market study in forty-eight hours.

Tom had tried to move more money after warning me that Apex and the banks were watching.

I saved the request, but before I could forward it, the status changed.

DECLINED: SECOND SIGNATURE REQUIRED.

The corporate secretary had activated the new voting-control restrictions. Tom could no longer transfer more than two hundred and fifty thousand dollars without board approval.

His footsteps thundered toward the study.

He burst through the open door holding his phone. "What did you do?"

I looked up from the laptop. "About what?"

"The bank says my authority changed."

"Then you should ask the board."

His face tightened. For one dangerous second, I thought the secret had broken too soon.

Then Chloe shouted from downstairs that her dress had arrived, and Tom glanced toward the sound. Vanity won over caution.

"We will deal with this after the banquet," he said. "Wear the navy gown. Smile for the cameras."

He left.

I opened my encrypted messages and typed to Mark.

He knows something changed. Move the meeting to eight tomorrow. Tonight proceeds as planned.

Mark's reply appeared at once.

Guarantee revocation is signed. Send the word.
