Chapter 1

ZIA

The night I tried on my wedding dress alone, my blind father was brutally beaten by my fiancé. My tears broke when I connected with Casey's video call, who smiled smugly.

"This is fitting retribution for the old man who dared to harassing my best friend!" Noel said as he kicked my father's back harder. The sound of breaking bones made me hysterical.

It made no sense. My father was blind. But just because of Casey’s accusation, Noel believed my father was the suspect.

When I got home, my father had been taken to the hospital. Noel's face was different, pale this time. He hugged me.

"Zia, your father has been proven innocent. This was all the work of my business rival," he whispered. "I'm sorry and have paid dearly for his special care."

My blood boiled right up to brain. He thought an apology and money could fix everything.

"It was my fault," Casey cried with a fake mask. "My eyes were covered with a cloth and I thought... your father did it."

"Don't be angry at Casey, she just panicked because your father was there." Noel let go of the hug. "And this has nothing to do with our wedding. Everything will still happen."

For two years, Noel had covered up Casey's little mistakes to me, two years Noel had successfully persuaded me in crazy ways. But today was the end. I couldn't forgive them for daring to touch my family.

I no longer thought about the wedding. Instead, I would do anything to make my family disappear from Noel's world. And make sure they got what they deserved!

My father's bones weren't just broken—the doctor said he was paralyzed for life. When he came to, he gripped my hand tightly with trembling fingers.

"Zia... Someone said you were in danger at Noel's house, so I came. But Casey was there and suddenly accused me. She loves Noel, all of this... just so your wedding would be canceled. So you have to marry Noel."

My tears fell heavily. My fists clenched so tightly my nails dug into my skin. "Dad, how can I marry the man who almost killed you?"

"I'm fine." His lips forced a bitter smile, while his eyes—which would never see the world—stared blankly. "If you cancel, it's the same as letting Casey win. Don't sacrifice your love for Noel just because of me."

My heart felt torn. But before I could answer, the door opened. Noel walked in, and Casey stood sweetly by his side, as if they were a legitimate couple.

"Zia, take your father home in a taxi. I have to take Casey to her modeling job."

Hearing the cold tone in his voice, I stood up. Holding back my boiling anger. "Noel, don't you feel the need to apologize to my father for all this?"

Dad tried to calm me down with a weak pat on my back, but I ignored him. My eyes were fixed sharply on Casey. "And you—you should be punished for accusing a blind person without evidence!"

Casey immediately teared up, clutching Noel's arm. Her voice was soft, full of falsehood. "I... I was just scared, Zia. I didn't mean to..."

"You're overreacting, Zia." Noel stared at me sharply, his face stiff. "I've been supporting you and Mr. Alfred financially for two whole years. I paid for this hospital. Now, with your father paralyzed, he can't work. That means I'll be the one supporting both of you. Isn't everything easier for you and your father after this accident?"

His words hit harder than a punch. All my sacrifices, two years of full dedication as a secretary to get Noel's company back on its feet—meant nothing to him.

Noel pulled Casey out. The door slammed behind them.

I fell into a chair. My breath was ragged. Noel had dug into our wounds until they bled, then stuffed them with money as if it were a cure. But for us... it was poison.

And inside my heart, something broke. My love had died.

“Zia, it's all because of Dad." His grip tightened on me. His eyes filled with tears. "If only—"

"No, Dad." I interrupted gently. I kissed his hand repeatedly. "This isn't your fault."

Suddenly, his grip tightened. His breathing became labored, his face pale. My father had a history of heart disease.

"Doctor!" I shouted in panic.

I pressed the call button repeatedly, but no nurse appeared. Panic began to choke me.

I ran out of the room and saw Noel's assistant, walking by with a casual stride. "Help my father! Call the doctor right now!"

Jack stopped, staring at me coldly. "No one is coming, Miss Zia. Mr. Noel is angry. Any service for you and your father will be stopped until you apologize to Miss Casey."

Anger and pain mixed together. My chest felt tight. I ran back into the room and quickly grabbed my phone. Remembering how important my father's life was, I no longer cared about my pride.

I pressed the call button for Noel repeatedly. But there was no answer. Finally, I tried contacting Casey and succeeded.

"Yes?" Casey's voice greeted me.

"I'm sorry, Casey. I—please tell Noel I'm sorry for you. Now let me call the doctor because my father had a heart attack!"

"Okay," she said, momentarily relieving me. "Noel, Zia says she doesn't want to take a taxi. Can you send a driver?"

My body froze.

Noel's voice immediately attacked me, full of anger. "Zia, don't talk to me today!"

"No, no. Noel, please—"

The call was abruptly disconnected.

I stared at my father, who was still trying to hold on. My heart was beating fast. Tears and despair wet my face.

"How did it go?" Jack asked, suddenly appearing at the door.

Before I could respond, I saw a tall man in a black leather jacket behind Jack. He stuck a thin needle into the back of Jack's neck, and Jack stiffened and collapsed unconscious instantly.

"It's a high-tech serum, enough to touch certain nerves to force the brain to shut down temporarily," he said lightly.

I stepped back in fear.

"Don't worry, Zia. I'm here to deal with your father now."
