Chapter 1

When I was young, Anthony Scott always protected and spoiled me.

He was the most talented sharpshooter but suffered from a rare heart condition, which caused him to miss his chance at the national team tryouts.

The Scott family wanted to send him abroad for better treatment and training.

But he had been in love with me for years and was willing to give up his bright future, even his life.

I didn't want to hold him back, so I turned away and started going out with my childhood friend.

Years later, he became a famous sharpshooter, shining on the field with a beautiful fiancée by his side.

Our lives couldn't be more different.

And to make matters worse, I had cancer and didn't have much time left.

——

The next time I saw Anthony, he was the big client I had to impress.

My manager brought me along for a business dinner, and I ended up drinking too much.

The alcohol burned as it slid down my throat, leaving a sharp pain in my stomach.

Anthony's eyes were locked on me, filled with shock, doubt, and a hint of anger.

The manager nudged me, "Emilia, why are you just standing there? Go and offer Mr. Scott a drink!"

He had noticed the spark between us, thinking maybe something might happen.

I quietly covered the scar on my wrist, forcing a weak smile. "Mr. Scott, a toast to you!"

Anthony's dark, intense gaze stayed on me, but he didn't say a word.

Awkwardly, I downed the drink in one gulp, and immediately my stomach cramped.

My manager gave a flattering smile, "Mr. Scott, would you consider working with our company on this year's endorsement deal?

"If you do, I promise Emilia will take good care of you tonight!"

Before I could react, I was already stumbling into Anthony's arms.

Panic rushed through me, and I tried to pull away, but his grip tightened around my wrist.

He hissed, "When you left me, did you ever think you'd end up selling yourself like this?"

He wasn't wrong. I had left him.

We were each other's first love, tangled together for years.

He was a shooting prodigy with a bright future ahead of him. But the day they discovered his heart condition, his world fell apart.

I sold everything my mom had left me to pay for his treatment.

But the doctors said Anthony needed a heart transplant, and the surgery alone would cost hundreds of thousands.

The ongoing care would be even more expensive.

Just like one of those tired clichés, Anthony's mother came to me and asked me to leave him.

She said, "Anthony fought with his father because of you. He's willing to live on plain bread with you, but do you want him to risk his life for love?

"He needs to stay a part of the Scott family to survive. His future will still be bright!

"If you really love him, don't hold him back."

The night I broke up with him, it was pouring rain.

He clung to my hand, begging, "Emilia, don't leave me. Please?"

I pulled my hand away coldly. "Anthony, I never loved you. Stop following me."

His eyes reddened, and blood spilled from his lips as he dropped to his knees, pleading with me to stay.

I steeled myself and said, "You were just a stepping stone to get me into the high society. But now that you want to cut ties with the Scott family, how am I supposed to love you?

"I love whoever has the money!"

With that, I turned and got into the luxury car parked on the side of the road.

The reflection on the window showed me locked in a passionate kiss with my childhood friend.
