Chapter 1

My daughter had once been a dance prodigy, but a car accident left her paralyzed from the waist down.

I, Sophia Bennett, am a specialist in neurology. After the accident, my husband, Richard Carter, brought up the long-buried Helios Project, a neural brain-machine implant program. For the sake of our daughter, I was forced to proceed.

“Mom! I can stand up!”

Months later, Emily Carter’s legs gradually improved, and she was able to stand again.

But the next day, tragedy struck—Emily lost consciousness and became a vegetative state.

That news hit me like a thunderbolt. It not only invalidated years of my research but also condemned my daughter to a living death.

As I was frantically going through medical records to find what went wrong, an email arrived. I realized I was on my husband’s computer. The opening line made my hands tremble with shock and fury:

“Mr. Carter, we’ve already concealed the incident with your daughter. Your wife won’t find out.”

I closed the email with shaking fingers, unable to believe that everything—my daughter’s tragedy—was orchestrated by her own father.

I swore that this heartless man would pay, and that I would save my daughter at all costs.

“Hello, is this Ms. Bennett? This is New York Downtown Hospital. Your daughter, Emily Carter, has been in a car accident and is undergoing emergency treatment…”

At the observation window of the ward, my nails dug so hard into the frame that my fingertips turned white.

On the other side of the glass lay my daughter, quiet and fragile like an abandoned doll.

She was only twelve—she should have been spinning gracefully beneath stage lights, her toes sketching the most brilliant arcs. Instead, she lay on the stark white bed, tubes piercing her frail body, connected to cold machines. A blanket covered her waist, hiding the cruel evidence of the runaway car that night—

The doctor’s solemn words still echoed in my ears:

“T12 and L1 spinal cord—complete spinal cord injury… paraplegia.”

Those two words shattered not only a dancer’s dream but also a mother’s heart.

A hand patted my shoulder. Richard, my husband, the CEO of a biotech corporation, stood pale and trembling.

I was numb, beyond comfort. My world had shrunk to the glass wall and the lifeless figure behind it.

Richard steadied himself, his eyes cold yet tinged with a dangerous fervor.

“Sophia,” he whispered, “you still have a chance to save our daughter. Activate the Helios Project.”

Those four words sent a storm crashing through my heart.

My eyes dimmed; my voice was weak. “No… It’s not ready yet.”

The project was my theoretical integration of neural directional induction, nano-scale neural signal bridging, and bio-material scaffolding.

Richard gripped my shoulders tightly, his eyes burning.

“Look at Emily! The only way to save her now is you. The Helios Project isn’t just for her—it’s for thousands of children like her! Sophia! For our child, you must do it!”

Emily’s radiant smile as she danced flickered before my eyes, an illusion I longed to touch—only to feel the cold, merciless glass. That cold pierced straight into my heart.

For Emily, who loved dance more than life itself, being unable to stand would be worse than death.

“Emily, Mommy will make sure you stand again!” My voice was quiet, yet unwavering.

Richard pulled me into his arms with relief.

“Excellent! Emily can be saved! As for the other patients—”
