Chapter 1

The first call I made after the crash went to my husband.

He texted, "I'm in a meeting."

But I found him holding another woman's hand.

...

Rush hour on the FDR had turned into a wall of metal.

One truck slammed into my back bumper. Another swallowed my front end. My little sedan folded between them like paper.

Glass split my forehead. The door crushed my left leg. My right arm caught the edge of the dashboard, and something inside it screamed.

A paramedic pried me out. "Ma'am, can you hear me? What's your name?"

"Evelyn," I managed. "Evelyn Vale."

"Will anyone pick you up?"

"My husband. I'll call him."

The phone rang four times, then went silent. Then came the text.

I'm in a meeting.

Somewhere behind us, another ambulance wailed. A woman's voice carried through its open doors, thin and shaking.

"Please don't leave me! Nobody's coming for me!"

The paramedic snorted. "That one's got a scraped elbow. She's been crying like that for a while."

I didn't laugh. I didn't have the strength.

...

Mount Sinai's ER smelled like bleach. Every chair was taken. A man bled into a towel beside the vending machine. A toddler wailed on his mother's hip.

A nurse pushed an IV bag into my good hand. "Hold this up. Registration's on the left. We're slammed tonight."

"I can barely walk."

"I know, honey. Everybody here can barely do something."

So I limped. I hugged the bag against my chest and pressed my sleeve to my forehead. My leg throbbed with every step.

The clerk at the window didn't look up. "Insurance card?"

"In my wallet. I need a second."

"Take your time." She glanced at the line behind me. "But not too much."

X-ray. CT scan. A tech who called me "sweetheart" and jabbed my arm twice before finding a vein. Then the payment kiosk, where I fumbled my card with shaking fingers while blood dripped onto the screen.

I called Adrian again.

Straight to voicemail.

I texted. I was in a car accident. I'm at Mount Sinai. Please come.

Three dots appeared. Vanished. Appeared again.

Still in the meeting. Handle it, Evie. You're capable.

I stared at that text.

...

They sent me down the east hallway to wait for stitches. The curtains there were half open, and I heard a man's voice I knew better than my own.

"Slowly. It's hot."

I stopped walking.

Through the gap, I saw him. Adrian. Charcoal suit, tie loosened, sleeves rolled to the elbow. He sat on the edge of a hospital bed, peeling an apple in one long, careful ribbon.

The woman in the bed had a single bandage on her elbow.

Serena Whitmore. His college classmate. The one he never talked about, until she moved back to Manhattan three months ago.

He set the apple down and poured her a cup of water. He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"You're safe now," he murmured. "I'm right here."

My IV bag slipped an inch in my grip.

Serena's eyes found mine first. They went wide. Then wet. Instantly, perfectly wet.

"Adrian," she whispered. "Your wife is here."

He turned. For one second, his face went blank.

Serena pulled her hand from his and pressed it to her chest. "You should go. Please. I don't want to cause trouble between you two. I'll be fine alone. I'm used to it."

"Serena, stop," he said softly.

I stepped inside the curtain. My leg nearly buckled.

"I called you," I said. "Three times."

Adrian rose. His gaze slid over me. Something flickered in his jaw, then settled.

"I was in a meeting."

"Here? In the ER?"

"Before. It ran late." He spread his hands. "Then Serena called. She has no family in the city, Evie. What was I supposed to do, ignore her?"

"You ignored me."

"You texted that you were handling it."

"I texted that I was in a car accident."

"And you're standing. You're talking." He gestured at me like I was proof of something. "You're fine."

I laughed. It came out of nowhere, sharp and ugly, and it made Serena flinch.

"Fine," I repeated. "I carried my own IV bag through registration. I paid my own bill with blood on my hands. And you were here. Peeling apples."

"She's an old friend."

Serena's lower lip trembled. "Evelyn, please. I know how this looks. But nothing is going on between us. Nothing." She dabbed her eyes with the sheet. "I just didn't expect you to follow him all the way here."

The room went still.

"Follow him?" I said.

"I only mean..." She glanced at Adrian, then back at me, voice tiny. "How else would you know which room?"

"I was in the same crash."

Adrian's brow creased. "What?"

"The FDR pileup. We were both in it." I tilted my head at Serena. "I heard you in the ambulance. Crying that nobody would come."

Serena's mouth opened. Closed.

Adrian didn't ask if I was badly hurt. He just rubbed the bridge of his nose, like I was a headache he had scheduled for later.

"Evelyn, this isn't the place."

"You're right." I set the IV bag on the tray beside Serena's apple. My hand had gone strangely steady. "So I'll keep it short. I want a divorce."

A nurse behind the next curtain stopped moving. A patient across the hall lowered his phone.

Adrian stared at me. Then his voice rose, loud and clean, built for an audience.

"Do you hear yourself? You accuse me of cheating with a friend who's been through hell, and now you want a divorce? Over an apple?"

"Over three missed calls."

"Over your paranoia." He stepped closer. Cologne and antiseptic. "You've been suspicious for months. Checking my phone. Asking where I am. This is that, Evie. This is you losing it."

"Everyone here can see what you're doing." He swept a hand toward the hallway, toward the strangers watching. "Making a scene in a hospital. Humiliating me."

Serena reached for his sleeve. "Adrian, don't. She's hurt. She doesn't mean it."

"Oh, she means it. Right up until she remembers what she'd be walking away from." His lip curled. "The penthouse. The cards. The name. You think anyone would look twice at you without the Vale behind it?"

Heat rushed into my face. My forehead started aching again.

"Is that what you think I'm afraid of?"

"I know it is." He adjusted his cuff, and the gold band on his finger caught the light. Our wedding ring. "Go get stitched up. Go home. We'll talk when you're rational."

He turned back to the bed.

Serena watched me over his shoulder. The tears were gone. Her lips curved, just slightly.
