Chapter 3

A week had passed since the cruise, and the bruises on my arms had faded from deep purple to sickly yellow-green. I sat at my vanity mirror, carefully applying concealer to the fingerprint-shaped marks that still dotted my forearms—evidence of how those men had held me down while they forced the vodka down my throat. Each dab of makeup felt like I was erasing myself, covering up the truth of what had happened.

The St. James family's annual charity gala was tonight. As the family's hostess, I was expected to smile, charm donors, and pretend that everything in my perfect marriage was exactly as it appeared. The irony wasn't lost on me—a charity event to help abused women, hosted by one.

I'd just finished applying the last layer of foundation when the doorbell chimed. Our housekeeper, Mrs. Chen, knocked softly on my bedroom door.

"Mrs. St. James, there's a delivery for you."

I found her in the foyer, holding an enormous white box tied with emerald silk ribbon. No delivery company logo, no return address—just my name written in elegant script across the top.

"Who brought this?" I asked, taking the surprisingly light box from her hands.

"A private courier, ma'am. Very professional. He said it was urgent you receive it today."

Back in my bedroom, I untied the ribbon with trembling fingers. Inside, nestled in layers of tissue paper, was the most exquisite evening gown I'd ever seen. The emerald silk seemed to shimmer with its own inner light, and when I lifted it from the box, it felt like liquid starlight in my hands.

A small card fell to the floor. I picked it up, my heart racing as I read the simple message: "You deserve to shine."

No signature. But somehow, I knew. Julian Blackwood. The man who'd caught me when I fell, who'd offered me escape with a single text message I still hadn't answered.

I held the dress against myself in front of the mirror. It was perfect—not just the size, but the color, the cut, everything. How had he known? More importantly, why did he care?

Adrian chose that moment to walk into our bedroom, adjusting his platinum cufflinks. He glanced at me holding the dress, his expression barely registering interest.

"New dress?" he asked absently, more focused on his reflection than on me.

"Yes," I said quietly. "Do you like it?"

He gave it a cursory look. "It's fine. Just make sure you don't upstage the actual cause tonight. This isn't about you."

The casual dismissal shouldn't have surprised me anymore, but it still stung. I watched him walk away, already pulling out his phone to check messages, and made a decision. Tonight, I would wear Julian's dress. Tonight, I would shine, whether Adrian noticed or not.

Two hours later, I stood at the entrance to the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, my hand resting lightly on Adrian's arm. The emerald gown fit like it had been made for me, hugging my curves in all the right places before flowing into an elegant train. I'd swept my dark hair into a classic chignon and worn the diamond earrings Adrian had given me for our fifth anniversary—back when he still remembered our anniversary.

The ballroom buzzed with the energy of New York's elite. Politicians, celebrities, and business moguls mingled beneath crystal chandeliers, their laughter mixing with the soft notes of the string quartet. This was Adrian's world, and I'd learned to navigate it like a diplomat in foreign territory.

"Lia," Adrian murmured as we paused at the top of the stairs leading into the ballroom, "remember what I told you about the speech tonight. Keep it short, keep it focused on the charity, and don't—"

"Don't make it about myself," I finished. "I know."

But as we descended the stairs, I caught the way conversations paused, the way heads turned. For once, I wasn't invisible. The dress—Julian's dress—had transformed me from Adrian's dutiful wife into something that commanded attention.

Adrian noticed too. I felt his grip on my arm tighten slightly, saw the way his jaw clenched as he nodded to various acquaintances. He wasn't used to sharing the spotlight, especially not with me.

"Adrian! Lia!" Ivy's voice cut through the ambient noise like a blade. She appeared at the bottom of the stairs, resplendent in a flowing white gown that made her look like a virginal angel. The contrast was deliberate—my emerald sophistication against her pure white innocence.

She embraced Adrian first, standing on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek. "You look so handsome, big brother," she cooed, her hand lingering on his lapel.

Then she turned to me, her blue eyes taking in every detail of my appearance. "Lia, what a... bold choice," she said, her smile never wavering. "Green is such a difficult color to wear. But you're certainly making a statement."

The backhanded compliment was expertly delivered, designed to sound supportive while planting seeds of doubt. But tonight, wrapped in Julian's gift, I felt armor-plated against her usual poison.

"Thank you, Ivy," I replied smoothly. "White is lovely on you. So... pure."

Her smile flickered for just a moment before reassembling itself. Adrian, oblivious to the undercurrents, was already scanning the room for important donors to schmooze.

The evening progressed in a blur of handshakes, air kisses, and carefully modulated conversations. I played my role perfectly—the gracious hostess, the devoted wife, the passionate advocate for women's rights. It was a performance I'd perfected over ten years, though tonight felt different. Tonight, I felt like I was watching myself from outside my body, seeing clearly for the first time how hollow it all was.

As the evening reached its climax, I took the stage to deliver my speech about the charity's mission. The microphone felt heavy in my hands as I looked out at the sea of faces—some genuinely interested, others merely going through the motions of philanthropy.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice carrying clearly through the ballroom, "tonight we gather not just to write checks, but to acknowledge a truth that many of us would rather ignore. Abuse doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care about your bank account, your social status, or your zip code. It thrives in silence, in shame, in the spaces where victims feel they have nowhere to turn."

I was hitting my stride, speaking from a place of genuine passion, when I caught sight of Ivy. She was positioned near one of the waiters carrying a tray of red wine, her face a mask of concentration. Something about her posture, the way she was calculating distances, made my stomach clench with dread.

"The women we help tonight," I continued, trying to maintain my composure, "are not statistics. They are mothers, daughters, wives who—"

It happened so fast. Ivy stumbled forward with theatrical grace, her arms windmilling as if she'd caught her heel on the carpet. The waiter, caught off guard, tried to steady his tray, but it was too late. The entire collection of wine glasses went flying, the deep red liquid arcing through the air like blood.

I had exactly one second to brace myself before the wine hit, soaking through the emerald silk, staining the bodice and splashing across the skirt. The liquid was cold and shocking, and the gasps from the audience were audible even over the microphone.

But what hurt more than the ruined dress was watching Adrian's reaction. Without hesitation, without even a glance in my direction, he lunged forward to catch Ivy as she completed her elaborate fall. His arms wrapped around her protectively, his face etched with concern as he helped her regain her footing.

"Are you hurt?" he asked her, his voice tender in a way he hadn't used with me in years.

Ivy pressed her face against his chest, her shoulders shaking with what appeared to be distress. "I'm so sorry," she sobbed. "I'm so clumsy. I've ruined everything."

I stood on the stage, wine dripping from my hair, my beautiful dress destroyed, and watched my husband comfort another woman while I bled humiliation in front of three hundred of New York's most influential people. Camera phones were already out, capturing every mortifying second.

"I should go clean up," I said into the microphone, my voice surprisingly steady. "Please, continue enjoying the evening."

I stepped down from the stage with as much dignity as I could muster, my heels clicking against the marble floor. Adrian was still holding Ivy, murmuring reassurances in her ear.

"I need to get backstage," I said to no one in particular.

That's when Adrian finally looked at me—not with concern or apology, but with irritation.

"Come on, Ivy," he said, scooping her up in his arms like she was made of spun glass. "Let's get you somewhere quiet."

And with that, he carried his precious sister toward the backstage area, leaving me to follow behind like a wine-stained afterthought, the ruins of Julian's beautiful dress trailing behind me like the remnants of my dignity.
