Chapter 3

Vivienne Cole's POV

"Finish your sentence, Gerald," I demanded, my voice cutting through the damp air of the garage.

Julian killed the headlights of his sedan but left the engine running. He didn't step out. He simply nodded toward the open elevator, a silent command to go.

I forced my legs to move. The cold bit through my oversized puffer jacket, but I ignored the ache in my joints. Gerald stepped aside to let me enter the steel box first, then followed, pressing the button for the fourth floor.

"The Park family," Gerald resumed, keeping his eyes on the floor indicator. "Sloane's father submitted their commercial lease renewal yesterday."

"For the flagship tower in the financial district."

"Yes, Ms. Cole. Their logistics company operates from those top ten floors. Without that address, their credit lines will freeze."

The elevator jerked upward. I gripped the aluminum handrail to steady myself. "And the landlord reviewing that lease?"

"The Cole Group." Gerald tightened his hold on the leather portfolio.

The doors chimed and parted, revealing a sterile, unlisted apartment. Plastic sheeting covered a single sofa in the corner. A long, metal folding table sat in the center of the room under a harsh fluorescent bulb. It was a ghost unit. A place that didn't exist on any official registry.

I walked to the table and pulled out a metal folding chair. The metal squealed against the concrete. I sat down, resting my bruised hands on the surface.

"Show me."

Gerald unzipped the portfolio. He drew out a stack of documents and spread them across the table. Heavy cream paper. Gold foil seals. The unmistakable steel emblem of my father's empire.

"Current market valuation of the Cole Group stands at two point four billion dollars," Gerald stated, his tone perfectly even. He tapped a thick legal binder. "Here are the equity certificates. Fifty-one percent."

I stared at the numbers. The zeros blurred for a fraction of a second before my vision cleared.

"You hid it well," I said.

"Your father anticipated Marie's greed. He instructed me to bury the true ownership through three offshore shell corporations before he passed." Gerald pushed a voting log toward me. "For eight years, I have attended every board meeting by proxy. I have exercised your voting rights from the shadows."

I reached out and traced the signature line on the proxy form. My fingers were steady. The purple needle tracks on my knuckles looked jarring against the crisp white paper, but my grip did not falter.

"Marie holds the title of CEO," Gerald continued. "But she cannot liquidate the core assets. She cannot sell the company. You are the majority shareholder. You own the board."

"Two point four billion," I repeated, the number tasting foreign on my tongue. "And Marie has spent the last decade acting like she built it from the ground up."

"She expanded the hospitality division," Gerald conceded, tapping a secondary file. "But the logistics and real estate holdings remain untouched. I block her every attempt to sell them off."

"She must be furious."

"She is desperate. Which brings us to the Park family lease." Gerald pointed to the letter of intent. "Marie wants this signed. She needs Sloane's family tied to the Cole Group to secure Aaron's loyalty. Aaron's tech startup is gaining traction. Marie wants to absorb it."

"So Sloane gets a discounted high-rise, Aaron gets a wealthy bride, and Marie gets Aaron's tech company." I traced the edge of the paper. "A perfect little ecosystem."

"An ecosystem built on your supposed grave," Gerald added.

I stopped turning the pages. "What has my stepmother told the board all these years? How did she explain my absence?"

Gerald hesitated. He adjusted his pristine cuffs, a rare display of nerves.

"Tell me, Gerald."

"Marie crafted a very specific narrative," he said, his voice dropping a register. "She officially branded you as a destitute runaway. A disgraced daughter who fled the country, cut all ties, and squandered her trust fund on illicit habits."

"She needed to legitimize her power grab," I reasoned aloud.

"By painting you as incompetent and unreachable, she convinced the shareholders to let her steer the ship."

"And Aaron?" I asked, looking up. "Did she feed him the same story?"

"She did more than that. Your stepmother orchestrated Sloane Park's introduction to Aaron three years ago."

The words hung in the sterile room. I thought back to the banquet hall. Sloane's sickly sweet perfume. The massive diamond on her finger. Aaron's undisguised contempt.

"Tonight's welcome banquet," I started, piecing the logic together.

"It was never about celebrating Aaron's return from London," Gerald finished. "It was a stage. A trap designed to parade your replacement in front of you."

"She wanted the high-society circles to witness my humiliation firsthand."

"Yes. To cement your status as the pathetic, discarded ex-girlfriend. If you look broken in public, no one will ever believe you hold the keys to the empire."

I didn't scream. I didn't slam my fists against the metal table.

A laugh slipped past my lips. It started small, a faint sound vibrating in my chest, before settling into a cold, thin smile.

Gerald blinked, clearly taken aback by the expression. He had watched me cry over my father's casket. He had watched me leave the estate in tears twelve years ago. He expected sorrow.

I felt nothing but crystalline focus.

"Does Aaron know he is a pawn?" I asked, leaning back in the chair.

"Aaron is arrogant," Gerald replied, recovering his composure. "He believes he chose Sloane. He believes he is punishing you for abandoning him. Marie simply placed the pieces where he would naturally trip over them."

"And the emerald earrings I gave him for his tuition?"

"A broker on Marie's payroll filed a false pawn record," Gerald said. "But the private appraisal listed the stones at their full value, and Aaron signed for them himself. He knew exactly what he had."

My jaw tightened, then unclenched. Aaron had lied about the earrings and let me believe I had failed him. Marie had orchestrated the rest, weaving a web of lies so thick it choked the life out of my past.

But she didn't know I held the leash.

I stood up from the chair. My knees popped, protesting the sudden movement, but I ignored the pain. I walked past Gerald toward the single window at the far end of the room.

The glass overlooked the back alley. Four stories down, Julian's matte-black sedan sat parked under a flickering streetlamp. The engine exhaust plumed into the freezing rain, a steady white cloud in the dark. He hadn't left. He was waiting for me, guarding the exit.

Julian was right. I was acting like a ghost before they even buried me.

I turned back to the long metal table.

"Give me a pen," I commanded.

Gerald reached inside his charcoal suit jacket and produced a heavy silver fountain pen. He handed it to me across the table.

I pulled the Park family's lease renewal letter of intent toward me. The terms offered a ten-year extension at a locked-in, discounted rate. Sloane's father had already signed the bottom right corner in thick black ink. He desperately needed this building to secure his daughter's status and his company's future.

I uncapped the silver pen. The metal felt cool and heavy against my bruised skin.

I didn't cross out his signature. I didn't reject the terms.

I found the blank margin next to the landlord's approval stamp. I pressed the nib to the heavy cream paper and wrote a single, precise line.

I capped the pen, laid it down on the metal surface, and pushed the file across the table.

"Reply with this," I told him.

Gerald picked up the document. He adjusted his glasses and scanned my handwriting in the margin.

The color drained from his face. His hand trembled so violently the heavy cream paper nearly slipped from his grasp.
