Chapter 2

It took just one heartbeat to unravel everything.

Four years back, I was in the car with my parents, laughter spilling from our lips, when chaos struck—screeching brakes, twisted metal, crimson flooding the concrete. When I came to, my world was mute. My parents? Gone forever. And as if the silence wasn’t cruel enough, I soon found out my boyfriend at the time, Leonard, had been sneaking around with Viola—my closest friend. They got married not long after. I had no one left.

Then came Bobbie.

He was a shoulder to cry on, a comforting voice in a sea of quiet, a promise wrapped in safety. I clung to him like a lifeline, too shattered to recognize the rot beneath the surface. I never saw the monster hiding behind that gentle smile.

My grip tightened around my phone as the voice on the other end crackled through.

“Ms. Norris, the security footage is missing. Deleted from the system. And, um… there’s a signed document closing the investigation. Did you sign off on that?”

My mouth went dry. I never signed anything.

An icy dread crept over me. Back then, I was so numb—too consumed by grief to question anything. I let Bobbie handle all the details. He told me not to worry, that everything would be taken care of. I believed him.

If the files were erased… then Bobbie had the originals. He had to.

Fueled by panic and fury, I rushed into our bedroom, straight to the wall safe. My fingers hovered, shaking, before I punched in the code: 0623—Viola’s birthday. The lock clicked.

How ridiculous. He didn’t even bother to hide it.

Inside, rows of folders and USB drives sat like ghosts waiting to speak. I pulled out the topmost file, breath catching in my throat. Police reports. Transaction histories. Lists of names—officers paid to alter statements. At the very bottom, a hard drive dated the same night of my parents’ crash.

My heart turned to stone.

He orchestrated it. Bobbie didn’t just comfort me after the tragedy—he caused it. My parents hadn’t simply died. They’d been eliminated. For what? Money? Power? The inheritance I received after their passing?

As the truth dug in its claws, I moved like a machine—snapping photos, copying digital files onto a backup drive. When I was done, I returned everything exactly as I found it and shut the safe quietly, my expression calm and blank. Years of trust shattered, replaced by a cold resolve.

That night, Bobbie strolled into our home like he always did, carefree and arrogant. He lazily signed, “Babe, Viola misses you. She’s crashing here tonight. Did you cook for the three of us?”

Viola entered behind him, looping her arm through his like she belonged there. I had forgiven her once before—when she stole Leonard. We were young, and I convinced myself people make mistakes. I thought being with Bobbie made it all okay.

I was so wrong.

Letting her back into my life had been my biggest mistake. She didn’t just take Leonard. Now, she had Bobbie too.

With a forced smile, I steadied my fingers and replied, “No. I’m drained. Didn’t have the energy.”

Bobbie muttered under his breath, “Always so worthless,” before switching back to sign, “That’s fine, love.”

Viola giggled beside him, tossing her hair. “No big deal. She can’t hear you anyway.”

Bobbie rolled his eyes theatrically, then turned to me again. “Viola and I will whip something up. Go rest upstairs, yeah?”

I gave a slight nod and turned away, ascending the stairs slowly, each step pulling me closer to a decision I could no longer delay.

This ends now.

In the bedroom, I flung open the closet and yanked a suitcase from the corner. I packed without thinking—grabbing clothes, personal items, anything important—shoving it all in. I refused to spend another night under this roof, in this lie of a life.

Downstairs, soft sounds began drifting up—moans, hushed whispers, laughter.

I didn’t flinch. I just zipped up the bag and walked out.

In the quiet of my car, I pulled out my phone and dialed the one person I could trust with what came next.

“Hi, this is Vickie Norris. I want to file for divorce. And I need every single asset Bobbie and I co-own moved to my name. Don’t tell him a word until it’s final.”

There was hesitation. “Ma’am… that’s a serious request. Are you—”

“I’m done talking. Get it done.”

He’d taken everything from me—my family, my dignity, my peace of mind. But I wasn’t just leaving anymore. I was reclaiming every bit of what was stolen.

Still, even that wasn’t enough. Bobbie deserved more than to lose me. He needed to lose everything.

So, after checking into a hotel under a different name, I drove for hours—far from the city lights, until I reached a hidden building spoken of in whispers. A private organization. One that specialized in making people disappear.

No traces. No names. Just silence.

I stepped inside, the flash drive tight in my hand.

“I need to vanish,” I said, my voice firm and steady. “And I don’t want to be found.”
