Chapter 2

Sierra's POV

I dragged my scuffed suitcase and aluminum medical kit across the threshold of Red Willow Ranch. The temperature inside the hallway hovered just above freezing, biting through my denim jacket. Every exhale plumed into a white cloud.

"The guest room pipes burst three days ago," Wyatt said, stepping into the corridor to block my path. He wore the same dark jeans and boots from the reading, having shed his suit jacket. "The other bedrooms don't have secondary heat. Go to the motel in town."

"I need to check the springhouse and the northern pass at dawn," I said, dropping my bags onto the hardwood. The heavy thud echoed in the empty house. "Driving back and forth gives you twelve hours a day to lock me out of the operations."

Wyatt crossed his arms, his broad shoulders filling the narrow space. "The only room with working baseboards is my parents' master suite. You are not sleeping in Elias and Margaret's bed."

"I don't want their bed." I unzipped the top compartment of my duffel and yanked out a rolled canvas sleeping bag. "I'll take the sofa."

"Sierra." His voice dropped to a low, warning register. "Get out of my house."

"Our house." I tossed the sleeping bag against the master bedroom door. "I won't touch their belongings. But I am not freezing to death, and I am not surrendering my residency to make you comfortable."

Wyatt stared at the canvas roll, a muscle jumping along his jawline. He looked from the bag to my face, searching for a crack in my resolve. He didn't find one. He didn't argue further. Instead, he marched past me, shoved the master bedroom door open, and stripped a heavy wool blanket right off the foot of the mattress. He walked back out, clutching the fabric.

"The barn loft has a space heater," he muttered.

The front door slammed behind him, rattling the frosted glass panes. He surrendered the room, but he drew the boundary line in the ice outside.

Morning light exposed the dust floating in the upstairs hallway. I stood on a wooden step stool, twisting a fresh bulb into the flickering sconce. My elbow bumped a crooked landscape painting on the wall.

The frame shifted. A folded piece of yellowed paper hidden behind the backing slipped free and fluttered to the floor.

I stepped down and picked it up. It was a clipping from the county gazette, dated nine years ago. The grainy photograph showed my mother, June, stepping out of the passenger side of Elias Mercer’s truck near the old springhouse. The headline read: Midnight Meetings on the Ridge.

"Put that down."

Wyatt stood at the top of the stairs, gripping a steel thermos of coffee.

"Who hid this behind a painting?" I asked, holding the brittle paper up.

"My mother," Wyatt said, taking the final step. He snatched the clipping from my fingers, his grip folding the image of my mother in half. "She couldn't bear to throw it away, and she couldn't bear to look at it. Your mother took enough from this family, Sierra. You don't need to take the land, too."

"My father knew she met Elias that night." I kept my voice level. "I asked her about it years ago. She told me it wasn't what anyone thought."

Wyatt scoffed. "If they were so innocent, why did every adult involved choose silence when the rumors started? Why didn't Grant defend his wife?"

I opened my mouth, but no words came. I had no answer. Looking at the bitter certainty in Wyatt's eyes, a cold realization settled in my chest. Elias hadn't left me half the ranch out of simple guilt. He left it to force a conversation no one wanted to have.

By noon, I sat at the kitchen island, logging remote prescriptions for the clinic on my laptop. My phone buzzed against the granite counter.

Rowan Pierce.

The text preview flashed across the screen: Don't sign any long-term agreements. Give me ten minutes.

Eight months ago, I had been picking out catering menus with Rowan. Then I found the Black Ridge Minerals land options sitting on his desk at the law firm, highlighting Red Willow’s borders. I left my engagement ring next to his keyboard and never moved to Denver.

The phone rang. I answered it.

"Sierra," Rowan said, his tone slick and familiar, as if the broken engagement was just a temporary fight. "I saw the probate filing. Let me help you monetize your half. Don't repeat your father's mistakes over a few wild horses."

"Do not call this number again," I said, and ended the call.

I grabbed my pen and added Black Ridge to the top of my ranch audit list.

"Finding a buyer already?"

Wyatt leaned against the refrigerator, wiping grease off his hands with a shop rag. He must have walked in through the mudroom.

I slid the phone across the island. The screen displayed Rowan’s contact card: Pierce & Associates, outside counsel to Black Ridge Minerals.

Wyatt stopped wiping his hands. He read the screen, his expression tightening.

"My ex-fiancé represents the mining company trying to fence off the northern ridge," I told him, tapping the glass screen. "We have one thing in common now, Wyatt. We both want him off this property."

At dusk, headlights swept across the kitchen windows. A silver SUV parked near the porch.

Brooke Calder walked in without knocking, carrying a thick manila envelope. The county land-use board member didn't even glance at me.

"Wy," Brooke said, dropping the envelope on the table. She walked straight to the cupboards, pulling out a ceramic mug. "I brought the old boundary surveys for the pass."

She knew exactly where the coffee was. She also knew to grab the floral mug Margaret Mercer used to save for holidays. The town gossip about her and Wyatt suddenly made perfect sense.

Wyatt walked in from the mudroom, shivering. Brooke stepped right up to him, her fingers brushing his wrist as she fastened the loose button on his flannel cuff.

"Don't turn a personal inheritance into an ecological lawsuit, Sierra," Brooke said, finally looking my way. Her voice carried the polished edge of a politician. "The county won't block a legal fence just because you like the mustangs."

I ignored the domestic display. "I am a registered co-owner. The board will notify me before approving any new fence permits on the northern ridge."

Brooke offered a tight, patronizing smile. "Noted."

Static hissed from the two-way radio mounted near the sink.

"Mercer, you copy?" A ranger's voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and loud. "Got a wild mare down just outside the north fence line. Breech birth. She's seizing. I can't move her until dawn."

Wyatt reached for the radio mic. "Not our cattle, dispatch. Call the BLM range team."

I grabbed my aluminum medical kit off the floor.

Wyatt dropped the mic and stepped in front of the door. "You are not dragging county rangers onto my land tonight."

"Tonight she is on my boundary," I said, grabbing the brass doorknob and shoving past his shoulder. "So she is my problem."
