Goodbye, The Most Painful Love
Chapter 3
I floated back home with her.
So this is where she's been hiding him...
It's an expensive, luxurious apartment that Chloe rented for Gene using our shared marital assets, fearing I might harm him.
Gene, her ex-boyfriend, her "white moonlight."
The one she imagined I would cruelly harm.
For the three months, she didn't come home at night, she was here, entangled with him, even when I died.
The house was brightly lit. She wore a loose white shirt, looking as if she had stepped out of a manga, clean and ethereal.
Seeing Chloe return, Gene smiled tenderly, pulling her into his arms and planting a kiss on her forehead.
"Chloe, why are you back so late..."
Chloe naturally nestled into his embrace, very intimate.
"There was a case. I got busy and ran late."
After dinner, they cuddled for a while before Gene led Chloe to the balcony, where there was a professional astronomical telescope.
"Chloe, look! What a beautiful starry sky!"
Hearing the words "starry sky," Chloe seemed to remember something and hesitated.
"Gene, do you know about those starry skies with fluorescent colors?"
Gene was very curious. "Fluorescent starry skies? That must be beautiful! Have you seen them? I love starry skies! Can you take me to see them?"
Chloe smiled, "Sure, I'll definitely find those fluorescent starry skies for you to see."
Watching their affectionate exchange, my heart felt like it was being cut by a knife.
Chloe, did you just notice something odd?
The starry sky in that photo is completely different from the real one.
Those fluorescent points of light, can you really not guess what they are?
Or... is it because it's related to me that you simply don't want to guess?
"You came back so late, did you encounter a tricky case?"
"Yes, we found a male corpse. Only the torso remained; the head and limbs were cut off, even the genitals. It's likely a revenge killing."
"Oh, such a terrible death... Have you found any clues?"
"We've made some discoveries. We should be able to identify the victim and find the killer soon. Don't go out for a while; I'm afraid Hans might go crazy and hurt you again."
Gene held his wife in his arms, his eyes concealing a secret pride.
"Chloe, you're with me every day. Won't Hans... be unhappy about that?"
Hearing Gene mention me, Chloe's face darkened.
"What right does he have to be unhappy? He's so filthy and disgusting. He can't even compare to your little finger."
My heart filled with sorrow.
Don't you know that the person you love now is a demon?
The next day at noon, while Chloe was busy in the autopsy room, Officer James rushed in with a photo.
"Chloe! Have you contacted Hans? I've been calling him but he's not answering!"
Without looking up, Chloe replied, "Why would I contact that disgusting man?"
Officer James, sweating profusely, slammed the photo in front of Chloe.
"We found the body dump site! It's in the west of the city, only about ten miles from here! We've been investigating all morning. Someone saw a male corpse in a blue T-shirt. We compared the CCTV footage, and although it's only a side profile, it looks a lot like Hans! The dump site is very close to your house!"
Chloe's busy hands paused.
"There are plenty of blue T-shirts in the world, and even more people wearing them. It's just a coincidence."
"He's such a vicious person, even if I died, he wouldn't. Good people don't live long."
"If he could do such disgusting things, he deserves to die!"
"If he's dead, I'd be relieved."
I floated over to look, and my heart suddenly jolted. It was indeed me.
The photo seemed to be a screenshot from a video, with poor resolution. Unless you were very close to the person, it would be hard to identify someone from such a blurry side profile.
But the scar on my left arm was relatively clear.
Another officer rushed in urgently.
"Captain James, we have a lead!"
Chloe, you were so close, just a little bit more.
If only you had looked up, you would have known that the person in the photo was me, that the male corpse was me...
If you knew I was dead, would you be happy?
The officer brought a letter, with large words written in blood, "Guess who I am? Hint—starry sky."
Everyone gathered around the blood letter, speculating.
"Starry sky? Does it refer to yesterday's starry sky photo? What does it mean?"
A trace of disgust flashed in Chloe's eyes.
She took out her phone and sent me a message.
"Hans, aren't you disgusting! Do you think I'll change my mind if you play these tricks? Let me tell you, in the next life, and the life after that, I will never be with a filthy and vicious person like you again!"
"If you're not dead, hurry up and sign the divorce papers. Being married to you was the biggest stain on my life!"
Officer James looked grave. "Chloe, maybe we should investigate this. Hans doesn't seem like the type to play such jokes."
Chloe disagreed, "That man is like a mad dog. There's no need to pay attention to him."
She then buried herself in her work.
Officer James felt something was wrong. He took a few people to the dump and searched for hours before finally finding the "starry sky" photo.
A group of people examined the photo for a long time.
"These stars are strange. Looking at the background of the photo, it's in a room. How can there be stars in a room?"
"The color of the stars is also strange, it looks more like..."
Officer James suddenly tensed, a chill running down his spine.
"...Luminol reagent."
He instantly realized something and ran towards the autopsy room.
"It's terrible, Chloe! Something bad has happened to Hans!"
Chloe's slender fingers gripped the scalpel, not even lifting her head.
"Even if he's dead, it has nothing to do with me."
Officer James's voice trembled slightly as he urgently said, "The starry sky photo! It's blood... all blood! The photo was taken at a murder scene!"
