Chapter 6

The silence that followed the departure of the Moon Goddess was not a peaceful thing; it was a vacuum, heavy and suffocating, as if the very air had been stripped of oxygen. High above, the tallow candles flickered back to life one by one, their warm yellow light casting long, frantic shadows across the marble floor of the Blood Moon Pack house. The black eclipse receded, and the blue fire that had roared from the altar vanished without leaving a single scorched mark on the ancient stone.

Yet, everything had changed.

In the center of the grand hall, the pack members remained frozen on their knees. Elders, Beta warriors, and high-born ladies sat stunned, their knees pressed into the cold floorboards, paralyzed by the residual weight of cosmic authority. At the foot of the raised dais, Alpha Ronan knelt in the silver dust left behind by the celestial light. His heavy chest heaved as he stared down at his left wrist.

The skin beneath his leather gauntlet was scarred, glowing with a deep, pulsing silver light shaped into a flawless crescent moon. It wasn't just a mark etched into the surface; it vibrated deep within his veins, humming in rhythm with his heartbeat. It burned with a cold, terrifying heat—a constant, physical link pulling toward the dark courtyard outside where Iris had walked away.

"Ronan..."

A sharp, hysterical whisper broke the dead silence. Cynthia scrambled forward, her silk dress rustling against the stone. Her polished demeanor was completely gone, replaced by wild, wide-eyed terror. She reached out with trembling hands, aiming to grab Ronan’s arm, but the moment her fingers brushed the edge of his wrist, a sharp blue spark snapped from his skin.

Cynthia shrieked, recoiling as if she had touched white-hot iron.

"Get off me," Ronan growled. His voice was barely human, weighed down by the raw, primal force of a rejected bond that refused to break. He stood up slowly, his tall frame swaying for a brief second before he steadied himself. His golden-brown eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were wide with frantic confusion. "High Priest! Get over here! Now!"

At the front of the dais, the pack’s spiritual leader, High Priest Corvin, dragged himself forward on his hands and knees. The old seer was trembling so violently that his dark velvet robes swished against the floor. His ancient eyes were fixed on the silver mark pulsing on Ronan’s flesh.

"Examine it," Ronan commanded, his voice shaking with a dangerous edge as he thrust his arm toward the old man. "Sever it. Use the sacred oil, use the banishment chants—do whatever you must. I am the Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack! I rejected her! The pack elders sanctioned it! The trade treaty is signed! Sever this trick!"

High Priest Corvin lifted his frail, claw-like hand. Hovering his fingertips just an inch above the glowing silver skin, he closed his eyes and began to whisper an ancient diagnostic incantation.

For three long, agonizing seconds, the priest chanted. Then, as if struck by an invisible blow, Corvin gasped and collapsed backward onto his hips, staring up at Ronan in sheer terror.

"It cannot be severed, my Alpha," Corvin whimpered, his voice echoing clearly through the silent, breath-held hall. "It is the *Eternal Bond*."

A collective gasp swept through the court. The pack elders exchanged panicked, bewildered glances.

"Explain yourself, old man!" Alpha Vance of the Western Pack bellowed, stepping forward with his hand resting heavily on the hilt of his broadsword. His face was flushed with red rage. "My pack signed a union treaty tonight! My daughter stands here as the rightful Luna! You tell me some floor-scrubbing Omega can override the authority of two Alpha lines because of a stray spark of light?"

"It is no mere spark, Alpha Vance!" High Priest Corvin cried out, turning his terrified gaze toward the visiting ruler. "In the three thousand years since the First King walked these lands, the Moon Goddess has intervened in mortal rejections only three times. The Eternal Bond is not a pack law; it is a cosmic decree! It is forged directly from the origin thread of the universe. Mortal decrees, Alpha commands, border treaties—they are dust before it! It cannot be undone!"

Ronan felt the room spin. "What are you saying?" he demanded, grabbing Corvin by the collar of his robe and hauling the old man off the floor. "Are you telling me I am forced to bow to her?"

"I am telling you that the Goddess has overruled you," Corvin whispered hoarsely, meeting Ronan’s furious gaze with absolute sorrow. "You can drive her out, Alpha. You can banish her body beyond your borders. But your soul is tethered to hers until the day you bleed your last drop of blood. If you touch another female while this mark burns... the bond will tear your wolf apart from the inside out."

Ronan let go of the priest, staggering back a pace. He looked down at his hand, watching the silver mark pulse in tandem with his frantic pulse. Tethered. To Iris. The quiet, nameless girl who cleaned the grease off the kitchen pans. The meek Omega who slept under the scullery stairs.

Beside him, Cynthia stood motionless. The shock on her face was rapidly hardening, curdling into something venomous and black. She looked from Ronan’s glowing wrist to the open oak doors leading out into the winter night where Iris had disappeared.

A floor-scrubber, Cynthia thought, her nails digging so deep into her palms that blood welled beneath her skin. A nameless, wolf-less parasite has ruined my coronation.

She saw the way Ronan was staring at the doorway—not with hatred, but with a terrifying, unreadable conflict. She saw the panic in the eyes of the pack elders, who were already whispering among themselves about ancestral omens and divine wrath. In a single evening, her absolute grip on the Blood Moon throne had been shattered.

Cynthia stepped up beside Ronan, her voice dropping into a low, murderous hiss that only he could hear. "This changes nothing, Ronan. She is still an Omega. She has no power, no family, and no army. Mark or no mark, she leaves this territory. And if she doesn't survive the journey past our borders..." A cruel, cold smile touched the corners of her lips. "...then a dead mate binds no one."

Ronan didn't answer her. He couldn't. His mind was consumed by the icy realization that as Iris walked away into the dark, a piece of his very chest felt as though it were being dragged across sharp stones behind her.

The Moon Goddess had spoken. But as Ronan clenched his glowing fist, his pride swallowed the divine warning whole. He was the Alpha. He would not let a floor-scrubber destroy his kingdom.
