Chapter 1

My husband, Vincenzo Castellano, was a mafia boss—cold, untouchable, the kind of man people obeyed without question, the kind they would kill for. But on the night our son was fighting for his life, he wasn’t with us. He was in another hospital, comforting his mistress because her son had a simple stomach ache.

I called him from the ER, desperate, begging him to unlock my accounts. I needed to pay for a specialist. I needed it done immediately or our child wouldn’t survive.

He let out a tired sigh, irritated.

“Olivia, enough with the theatrics. Raffy is actually suffering right now. I don’t have time for your jealousy fits.”

“Vincenzo, I’m begging you… he can’t even breathe properly… please, just let me pay the doctor—”

“If you call me again, I’ll sign the divorce papers. Deal with it yourself.”

And then he ended the call.

Just like that. Like we weren’t talking about our own son.

So I stayed beside Gabriel alone, the only one holding his world together while it fell apart.

I held his tiny hand as it slowly lost warmth in mine. I whispered to him even as the machines started to fail. I pressed a kiss to his forehead and watched his chest rise weaker and weaker until it stopped completely. I didn’t let go even when he was gone—until the nurses finally took him from my arms.

The cremation room was cold, smelling of burned metal and stale air. Dust drifted through the sunlight like it didn’t belong to anything anymore. I remember thinking maybe it was all that remained of other mothers’ grief. Soon, my child would become part of it too.

I stood there in a black dress that hung loosely on my thin body. I had cried until I couldn’t anymore. My eyes were dry now, but swollen and heavy.

I reached under the white covering and touched Gabriel’s hand. It was stiff, already gone from warmth. I slipped two small blue origami stars into his palm—things I had folded the night before with shaking hands, because I didn’t know what else a mother could give her child at the end.

“Gabriel…”

The staff exchanged uneasy glances before gently pulling the sheet back. And there he was.

My boy. Seven years old, though life had never allowed him to feel like one. He looked smaller than he should have, as if the world had been draining him long before death ever arrived. His lips were dry, his skin pale, and the marks from needles traced his thin arms. There was nothing peaceful about the way he went—only fear that hadn’t left his face.

And all of it, because his father chose someone else’s child over him.

I just stood there. Too drained to scream. Too hollow to cry. I had promised I would protect him.

And I failed.

The doctor beside me spoke softly. “I’m sorry… the infection progressed too fast. Without the specialist, there was nothing we could do.”

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I gently fixed a strand of hair off Gabriel’s face. He always hated it covering his eyes.

Then I said quietly, “It’s okay. You can proceed. Let him go… somewhere he won’t feel pain anymore.”

After a pause, they carefully placed him inside the chamber. Maybe they felt sorry for me. Maybe they didn’t feel anything at all.

At that point, I didn’t feel much either.

He was finally free. No more waiting. No more calling for a father who never came. No more asking questions that cut deeper every time.

“Mom, why doesn’t Dad visit me?”

“Mom, why does he always care about Raffy more?”

“Mom… did I do something wrong?”

I remembered every question. Every lie I told just to soften the truth. Every truth I swallowed so he could still smile.

But Vincenzo destroyed him anyway.

He froze my accounts while our son was dying. He chose another child over his own without hesitation.

I pressed my forehead against Gabriel’s and whispered, “I’m here, baby… Mommy’s here. Don’t leave me.”

But it was already too late. He slipped away without waiting for his father, without hearing Vincenzo’s voice one last time, without the treatment I couldn’t afford.

Ever since Lena came back—crying softly, acting fragile—Vincenzo changed. I became the enemy in my own home. He locked me inside the mansion, called me unstable, told everyone I was jealous, irrational, dangerous to his name and his empire.

“You harmed Lena and her son,” he once said coldly. “I’ll make sure you pay for it.”

And he did. Slowly. Quietly. Until my entire life was emptied out.

Now I stood outside the cremation building holding a small blue urn they gave me. It felt too light for something that contained my whole world. Gabriel loved blue. I held it close to my chest like I could still keep him warm.

“Let’s go home, baby,” I whispered.

The sun was bright, the air warm, but I felt like winter had settled inside my bones. Empty. Numb. Alone.

When I got back to the mansion with his ashes, the first thing I saw was Lena.

She was beside Vincenzo, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder as she leaned in and kissed his cheek.

“Vincenzo, thank you for staying with us last night,” she said softly. “Noel’s much better now… but what about Gabriel? Olivia called earlier and she sounded really—”

Vincenzo didn’t move away from her. If anything, he looked comfortable there.

“Olivia always dramatizes things to get attention,” he replied casually. “She exaggerates everything. Always has. She was never stable. Honestly, she was never a good mother. I probably spoiled Gabriel too much—he became weak.”

I felt my breath catch.

The urn almost slipped from my hands.

I thought I had run out of tears, but they came anyway—slow and silent.

If he wanted her, he could have her.

Then Vincenzo finally noticed me standing there. His hand dropped from Lena’s waist. His expression shifted slightly—guilt, maybe. Or annoyance.

“You should’ve told me you were coming back,” he said flatly. “I would’ve sent someone.”

He didn’t remember the night I begged him for help after being stranded near his private docks. I had called him terrified because men were following me. He told me he was busy. When I asked for guards, he said they weren’t drivers. That if I kept acting helpless, he’d finalize the divorce himself.

That night, I walked alone and nearly got dragged into a van. When I called him again shaking, he told me I was stupid for walking alone and asked what I expected.

But when Lena needed anything—he sent cars, guards… himself.

I held the urn tighter.

“It’s fine,” I said quietly.

He stared at me for a long moment. Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

Then he asked, almost absentmindedly—

“Did Gabriel recover?”
