From Discarded Wife To His Billionaire Aunt
Chapter 4
The leather seats of Dean Grayson’s custom Maybach were heated, emitting a faint, comforting scent of fine upholstery and dark cedar. Outside, the rain continued to hammer against the privacy glass, but inside the sealed cabin, the storm felt a world away.
Adelaide sat holding a warm porcelain cup of tea Dean’s driver had handed her before closing the door. Across from her, Dean sat with one tailored leg crossed over the other, a tablet resting on his knee. He was the picture of absolute, unshakeable control.
"Where are we going, Mr. Grayson?" Adelaide asked, her voice calm, though her mind was racing.
"My private residence in the upper west enclave," Dean replied smoothly, not looking up from his screen. "You need dry clothes, a hot shower, and a night of uninterrupted sleep. But before we arrive, we have business to discuss."
Adelaide took a slow sip of tea, letting the heat settle in her chest. "I told you at the lounge—I’m done with the Grayson family."
"You're done with Oscar," Dean corrected, setting the tablet aside and fixing his piercing gray eyes on her. "Oscar is a small, shortsighted man playing with power he didn't build. But I am offering you an alliance with the man who controls the entire empire."
He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. The sudden proximity brought his broad frame closer, radiating a calm, formidable gravity.
"My grandfather’s primary trust holds forty percent of the voting shares in Grayson Global," Dean explained, his tone businesslike, precise, and devoid of fluff. "Under the terms of his will, full executive voting control of that block can only be released to a lineage head who is legally married and demonstrating personal stability. Until now, I’ve managed to bypass the board using temporary proxies. But a rogue faction of corrupt board members—led quietly by Oscar’s allies—is filing a motion at the end of the month to challenge my control, citing the marriage clause."
Adelaide set her tea down, her eyes narrowing as she studied the man across from her.
"Why me, Mr. Grayson?" she asked directly. "There is no shortage of high-society heiresses or corporate daughters who would jump at the chance to marry the CEO of Grayson Global. You could pick anyone. So why an ex-wife who just got thrown out into the rain?"
A faint, sharp glint flashed in Dean’s dark eyes.
"Because an heiress comes with a family expecting a piece of my board," Dean replied without a second of hesitation. "And more importantly, none of them possess your composure. I’ve watched you for three years at our annual galas, Adelaide. You endured Oscar’s cold neglect and the snide commentary of high society with complete, unwavering dignity. You don't panic, you don't leak to the press, and you don't fold under pressure. You are the only person I trust not to compromise my position."
He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a sleek blue folder, and placed it on the small mahogany table between them.
"A five-year contract marriage," Dean stated. "In exchange, you will receive three things."
He extended a long finger. "First, absolute legal immunity and security. Grayson Global’s legal team will be at your disposal, and Oscar will never be able to touch a single asset or thread of your life again."
He extended a second finger. "Second, complete financial independence. A luxury penthouse title in your name, an unrestricted line of credit, and full seed funding to launch your own independent fashion house under your maiden name, Vance."
Adelaide froze. The air in her lungs caught sharply.
She stared at him, her quiet composure breaking for the first time all night. "My fashion house? How do you—"
"I don't enter business partnerships blind, Adelaide," Dean interrupted smoothly, his tone low and grounded. "Before I walked into The Sovereign tonight, I had my team pull your complete background file. I know you graduated top of your class at Parsons before your father fell ill. I know about the freelance label you tried to register four years ago—the one Oscar forced you to abandon because he thought a working wife was unbecoming of his image."
He leaned back slightly, watching her processing every word.
"Oscar treated your talent like an inconvenience," Dean said softly. "I treat it as an underutilized asset. I will fund your brand, build your atelier, and give you total creative control."
Adelaide’s throat felt tight. For three years, her dreams had been treated like a pathetic joke by the man who was supposed to support her. Hearing them validated by the most powerful titan in the industry sent an unexpected, fierce heat straight to her chest.
"And the third thing?" Adelaide asked, forcing her voice into sharp focus.
A slow, lethal smile curved Dean’s lips.
"Third," Dean murmured, his voice heavy with dark promise. "You will return to the Grayson estate. Not as the discarded, quiet ex-wife begging for crumbs... but as the matriarch. As Oscar’s aunt. Every time he and Maeve look at you, they will have to bow their heads and address you with respect."
The silence in the car stretched tight, electric with unspoken power.
Adelaide looked at the blue folder, then back into Dean’s unyielding gray eyes.
"Five years," Adelaide said calmly. "And what are the boundaries?"
"Strictly professional in private," Dean replied cleanly. "We share a residence for public appearances, we present a united front to the board, and we decimate our mutual enemies. In five years, you walk away with fifty million dollars, a global fashion brand, and absolute freedom."
Adelaide reached for the blue folder, flipping it open to the first page.
"Do you have a pen, Mr. Grayson?" she asked, her voice as steady and sharp as polished crystal. "Or should I use my own?"
Dean reached into his suit jacket and slid a heavy gold fountain pen across the table.
"Welcome to the top, Adelaide."
