Chapter 1

The candle at Table 4 was down to its second wick, its bergamot scent lost in a shallow pool of melted wax.

At 9:42 PM, Adelaide lowered her phone. No missed calls. No unread messages.

She smoothed her pale ivory silk dress—saved specifically for tonight. Today marked three years since she had married Oscar Grayson. Three years of playing the dutiful, soft-spoken wife, standing two paces behind him at galas while maintaining the home he rarely returned to.

A shadow fell across the tablecloth. It wasn't Oscar.

It was Harrison, Oscar’s head of security, holding a silver tray with a black envelope and a heavy velvet pouch.

"Mrs. Grayson," Harrison said, his face a mask of professional neutrality. "Mr. Grayson sent me to clear your table. He instructed me to deliver ten thousand dollars in cash for your evening, as well as compensation for your inconvenience. He suggests you order dessert and call an Uber home."

Adelaide stared at the cash bag. The insult felt like a cold slap. "He couldn't even call me?"

"Mr. Grayson is occupied," Harrison replied with a brief bow. "Goodnight, ma'am."

Her phone buzzed on the table.

> Oscar: Don't wait up. Something important came up. Take the money and go home.

Adelaide picked up her ice water, tipped it, and poured it directly over the flame. The fire hissed and died, leaving a thin trail of dark smoke in the air.

Forty minutes later, a downpour hammered the city as Adelaide’s taxi reached the Grayson Villa.

She pushed open the heavy front doors, shaking out her damp umbrella. The usually dark foyer was ablaze with light, the grand staircase flanked by custom Italian leather suitcases and Parisian designer trunks that didn't belong to her.

"Careful with the crocodile leather," a melodious voice echoed from the top landing. "Oscar, tell them the guest suite needs to be aired out immediately. I can't abide damp air."

Down the spiral staircase walked Maeve Sterling, wrapped in a cream cashmere cardigan over a silk slip dress. Right behind her came Oscar, his tie loosened and sleeves rolled up, laughing warmly.

The moment his eyes caught Adelaide standing in her rain-speckled coat, his smile vanished.

"You're back early," Oscar said coldly.

Adelaide recognized her instantly from old photos in Oscar's desk drawer. *Maeve Sterling.* Oscar’s first love, who had left for Paris four years ago, leaving a vacuum Adelaide had been chosen to fill.

Maeve paused on the steps, looking down at Adelaide with a gentle, pitying smile. "Oh, Oscar. Is this your wife? I thought you said she’d be out for the evening."

"It doesn't matter," Oscar said, stepping down to the marble floor. "Adelaide, Maeve arrived from the airport an hour ago. She’s staying here."

"Here?" Adelaide’s voice sliced through the rain outside. "In our home?"

"It’s my home, Adelaide. Purchased by Grayson Global assets. Maeve needs a place to stay while her townhouse is renovated."

"She can stay at a hotel, Oscar. You own three five-star properties in the city center."

"Don't start," Oscar snapped. "Maeve is family. Her father was my father’s business partner. She isn't staying in a commercial hotel."

Maeve walked down the remaining steps, smoothly reaching out to adjust Oscar’s lapel. "Oscar, please don't fight on my account. Adelaide, I hope I’m not intruding. I know this looks sudden."

"Sudden?" Adelaide gave a bitter laugh. "Oscar, today is our third wedding anniversary. I waited for you at Le Jardin for nearly three hours."

Oscar didn't flinch. He pulled a heavy black fountain pen from his breast pocket and tossed it onto the glass console table, alongside a thick legal document: AGREEMENT OF MARITAL DISSOLUTION.

"I didn't forget what today was," Oscar said. "I chose today because it makes the timeline clean. Three years was the agreement with the estate trustees to settle your family's debt. That period is up."

Adelaide stared at the paper. "You're divorcing me?"

"Let's not make a scene," Oscar said flatly. "You were quiet, docile, and played the role of a presentable wife when I needed one. But let's be honest—you never fitted into my world. You don't have the background, the family connections, or the presence required for the Grayson name. Maeve is back. Your role is over."

He gestured toward two small black suitcases by the coat rack. "I had the staff pack your essentials. There's a five-hundred-thousand-dollar settlement in Section 4. Sign the papers, take your bags, and leave tonight."

"Tonight? Oscar, it’s storming outside. It's nearly ten o'clock."

"Harrison can call you another car," Oscar said, turning his back on her to lead Maeve toward the living room. "I want the house clear by morning. Sign the papers on your way out."

Maeve looked back over her shoulder, her eyes gleaming with quiet, victorious cruelty.

Adelaide stood alone in the echoing foyer. Three years of dimming her light and playing the quiet wife, reduced to two suitcases and a buyout contract.

Slowly, she walked over to the console table and picked up the fountain pen. Flipping straight to the last page, she didn't read the terms or look at the buyout figure.

With a sharp, decisive stroke, she signed her name across the line: Adelaide Vance.

She set the pen down with a loud clack, grabbed her suitcases, and walked out into the roaring storm without looking back.
