Chapter 3

"Grab the long taper candles from the dining room, Ro!" Kael shouted from the open garage.

"I put them in the blue bag!" Rowan yelled back.

Saturday morning, three days after the Mother's Breakfast and the cropped hallway video, I stood by the kitchen island and watched my mate load his car.

"Check the silver forks too," Kael called. "We need enough for three."

Rowan shoved the cutlery into his backpack beside a jar of hand-folded paper stars.

Kael grabbed his keys. "We are going to be out late tonight."

"Why?"

"Rowan wants to help Lydia set up a memorial for her mate."

I pointed to the pale yellow candles sticking out of the bag. "Those are mine."

"They have been sitting in the drawer for months."

"I need them today."

Kael sighed. "Do not start, Selena. Lydia has been dreading this anniversary."

He did not remember.

Today was my birthday.

I looked at Rowan. "Have fun."

"We will! I am going to make Aunt Lydia smile."

"Lock up if you leave," Kael said.

"I will."

Nobody asked what I was doing. I did not remind them.

For five years, I had built every family ritual. I ordered Kael's favorite cake, wrote Rowan's birthday scavenger hunts, remembered the dates of pack funerals and school field trips. If I did not put an event on the calendar, it disappeared.

Today I wanted to know whether I disappeared too.

At six, a bakery driver delivered the cake I had ordered for myself.

I set the white box on the kitchen island.

At nine, the house was still empty.

My phone buzzed.

Lydia is having a hard time. We will be late, Kael wrote.

At ten-thirty, Rowan sent a picture from his tablet.

A framed photograph of Lydia's late mate sat on a lace cloth. My birthday candles burned on either side. A card in Rowan's handwriting leaned against the frame.

You still have us.

Three months earlier, I had been the one who told Kael to cancel our anniversary weekend so Lydia would not pack her late mate's apartment alone. I had thought compassion made a family stronger.

I had not realized Kael would turn my generosity into an open-ended vacancy notice.

The front door opened at midnight.

Rowan ran into the kitchen. "I am making cocoa!"

He stopped when he saw me.

The cake sat open. The wax numbers had burned into crooked pools over the frosting.

Kael came in behind him. Lydia followed, still wearing the black memorial dress from the photographs.

Kael read the icing. "Happy Birthday, Selena."

Silence.

"I forgot," he said. "We will make it up tomorrow."

"You forgot while carrying my candles out of this kitchen."

"They are candles, Selena. Do not turn this into a tragedy."

"I bought them for my birthday dinner."

"Then you should have reminded me. You always remind me."

I stared at him. "I should not have to remind my mate that I exist."

"Today was the anniversary of Lydia's loss," Kael said, moving closer to her. "She only has us."

"Then who did I have tonight?"

His mouth closed.

Lydia folded her hands at her waist. "You have a whole pack, Selena. I needed them for one night."

"I was not talking to you."

She flinched.

Kael's Alpha aura pressed into the kitchen. "Watch your tone."

I laughed once. It sounded empty even to me.

"You are warning me about my tone on the birthday you forgot because another woman needed my husband and my son."

Rowan tugged on Lydia's sleeve. "Can we just go upstairs?"

"Ro," I said.

He looked at me reluctantly.

"Do you understand why I am hurt?"

His small face pinched with frustration. "It is just a birthday. We can do yours tomorrow. Aunt Lydia's memorial had to be today."

"And the Mother's Breakfast? The family tree?"

"Why do you keep bringing that up?" he shouted. "If you make Lydia leave, then I really will not call you Mom anymore!"

Kael finally said his name sharply. "Rowan."

Too late.

The threat had already landed, and this time he had used it deliberately.

I looked at Kael. "Correct him."

Kael hesitated. "He is five and exhausted. We will talk about it in the morning."

"No. You will talk about it whenever you decide to become his parent instead of his friend."

I closed the cake box.

"Selena—"

"I am tired."

I walked upstairs before he could turn my exhaustion into another argument.

In the bedroom, I locked the door and pulled the separation agreement from my bag. My signature waited on the final page; I had filled it in after the hallway incident and left Kael's line blank.

I read every clause again.

Separate residence. Shared parental contact. Independent Luna duties pending formal review. No change to Rowan's legal mother designation without mutual consent.

The terms were not revenge. They were structure I could safely live inside now.

I also opened Rowan's school portal. Lydia still sat on the emergency-contact line beside my name. I took a screenshot and saved it with the separation papers. I was done arguing about whether the replacement was "just a feeling." Kael had signed it into a system.

At four-thirty in the morning, I opened the closet.

I packed one black suitcase with clothes, identification, my mapping certificates, and the small blue notebook where I had recorded every fever, allergy, nightmare routine, and food restriction Rowan had ever had.

Then I stopped.

I took the notebook back out.

It belonged to the years I had spent mothering him. I could not use it as proof in a fight.

I returned it to the closet floor beneath my old hiking boots.

I zipped the suitcase.

The metal teeth sounded impossibly loud in the dark room.

When I opened the bedroom door, Rowan stood in the hallway in his pajamas.

His eyes dropped to the suitcase.

For the first time, he understood that threatening to erase me might actually change where I lived.
