Chapter 2

Sophie sat at the kitchen counter on Friday morning, smoothing down a piece of heavy blue cardstock with both hands.

Using her glitter markers, she carefully drew thick, wobbly block letters across the center: *DADDY*.

"Mia doesn't have a daddy, right Mommy?" she asked without looking up, her tongue poking slightly out of the corner of her mouth as she traced the edges in gold.

I stopped packing her lunchbox, my hand freezing over an apple. "No, sweetheart. Her father lives far away."

"That's why Daddy was playing with her yesterday," Sophie said, nodding firmly to herself as if answering a question that had kept her awake all night. "He was just lending himself to her for a little bit. Because he has plenty of daddy love for me."

The innocent logic broke my heart into pieces. I walked over and kissed the top of her head. "He promised he'd be there this afternoon."

"I know," Sophie beamed, holding up the sign. "He looked right at me before he went to sleep and said, *Front row, peanut.* So I'm putting this on his chair so nobody else takes it."

When Ethan made that promise the night before, he had actually looked guilty. He had knelt in front of her bed, tucked the blankets around her shoulders, and sworn he would be at St. Jude’s auditorium by one-fifteen sharp for the first-grade spring concert.

At one o'clock, I walked into the crowded auditorium, holding Sophie's sign. Parents were already filling the rows, the room humming with chatter and the restless rustle of programs.

I found two seats in the third row, directly in the center. On the empty metal folding chair to my right, I set down Sophie’s handmade sign.

*DADDY*, it read in sparkling gold and blue.

At one-twenty, the lights dimmed. The velvet stage curtains parted to reveal thirty children standing on tiered risers, all wearing matching white shirts and red sashes.

Sophie stood in the middle of the second row, clutching a small pair of wooden rhythm sticks. Her eyes immediately scanned the crowd, darting directly to the seat beside me.

It was empty.

The music teacher raised her hands, and the piano began to play. The children launched into their opening song, their young voices ringing out clear and bright.

Sophie sang every word, but after every single line, her gaze flicked back toward the double doors at the rear of the hall. Each time the heavy wooden doors cracked open to admit a late parent, her posture straightened with sudden hope.

Each time an unfamiliar face stepped through, her shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.

By the third song, the door stopped opening.

The performance lasted forty-five minutes. When the final song ended, the auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

Mrs. Gable walked to the microphone, smiling warmly. "Thank you all so much for coming! Parents, please feel free to come up to the stage risers for photos with your performers before dismissal."

Dozens of parents rushed forward with smartphones and cameras, lifting their children into tight hugs, laughing and praising them.

I checked my phone as I stood up. A single text message from Ethan sat on the screen, sent ten minutes after the concert began.

*Emergency meeting with offshore investors ran long. Can't break away. Give Sophie a hug for me.*

No apology. No request for pictures. Just a routine excuse.

I walked toward the edge of the stage. Sophie was already walking down the wooden steps, holding the wooden sticks against her chest. She saw me, walked over, and picked up the paper card from the empty chair.

"Daddy had work, didn't he?" she asked.

Her voice was quiet, even, and entirely devoid of tears.

"Sophie... I'm so sorry," I said, crouching down to her level. "He really wanted to be here, but something unexpected came up at the office."

"It's okay," she said.

She didn't cry. She didn't throw a tantrum. But when she looked at me, she didn't smile either. That bright, trusting light that usually filled her eyes was completely gone.

She quietly slipped the blue card into her backpack and took my hand. "Let's go home."

The drive back was heavy and silent. The afternoon clouds had rolled in, casting a dull gray shadow over the downtown streets.

As we turned onto Oakmont Avenue, approaching the upscale boutique district, Sophie suddenly sat straight up in the backseat.

"Mommy," she whispered, her face pressing close against the glass. "Stop the car."

"What is it, Soph?"

"Stop the car. Please."

Her urgent tone made me pull over immediately to the curb, hazard lights flashing.

I followed her gaze across the four-lane street, looking through the spotless display window of *La Petite Princesse*, an exclusive designer boutique for children's custom formalwear and birthday parties.

Through the clear glass, the entire shop was glowing with warm, festive light.

Ethan was standing in the center of the showroom floor.

He wasn't in a boardroom. He wasn't on a conference call with offshore investors.

He was holding a glossy white bakery box tied with a pink satin ribbon in one hand. With his other hand, he was carefully placing a sparkling crystal tiara onto Mia's braided hair, adjusting it with the utmost care.

Mia squeaked with delight, jumping into his arms. Ethan caught her effortlessly, swinging her around before settling her on his hip. Mia wrapped both arms tightly around his neck and planted a loud, wet kiss on his cheek.

Beside them stood Vanessa, wearing an ivory silk blouse and a radiant smile. She was holding up her iPhone, snapping rapid-fire photos, laughing at whatever Ethan had just whispered to her daughter.

Ethan was laughing too. A deep, relaxed, unburdened laugh that echoed right through the shop’s opened front door.

A suffocating weight settled onto my chest, stealing every ounce of air from my lungs.

Beside me, the car door clicked.

"Sophie, wait!" I scrambled to unbuckle my seatbelt, but Sophie had already pushed open the rear door and stepped out onto the sidewalk.

She didn't run across the street. She just stood there by the front tire, holding the blue cardstock sign she had pulled back out of her backpack.

Inside the boutique, Ethan happened to turn his head toward the street while setting Mia down.

Through the clear glass, his eyes found ours.

The bright, easy smile instantly froze on his face. The color drained from his skin, turning him as pale as paper.

His gaze dropped from mine down to Sophie's small frame, locking onto the handmade sign gripped tightly in her little fingers.

*DADDY.*

Vanessa noticed his sudden silence and looked out the window as well, her hand slowly lowering her phone.

Ethan thrust the bakery box into Vanessa’s hands, turned on his heel, and hurried out the front door of the boutique.

"Claire! Sophie!" he called out, dodging a passing sedan as he jogged across the street toward our car.

His tie was loosened, his face twisted in panic. "Sophie, listen to me. It's not what you think. Mia's birthday party is this weekend, and Vanessa needed someone to help carry the cake and—"

He reached out a hand toward Sophie, his fingers trembling. "Peanut, Daddy had a brief window between calls. I was going to head straight to your school right after—"

Sophie didn't scream. She didn't demand an explanation.

She took three quiet steps backward, stepping completely behind my legs and tucking herself into the heavy fabric of my trench coat.

She pulled the cloth around herself, hiding entirely from her father's outstretched hand.

Ethan's hand hung frozen in midair, his eyes wide with shock. She had never pulled away from him before. Not once in her life.

From behind my coat, Sophie's small, trembling voice rose up, muffled against my side.

"Mommy," she whispered, her grip tightening on my fabric. "Can we go home?"
